Hours after US and British figures called for the'head of snake in libya to be cutoff'NATO warplane early monday april 25 bombed a building in gadaf compaund in tripoli.his office and conference room was wrecked in an attempt to kill him.
Gadaf's son Saif al islam said such an attack wouldnt achieve anything since the west was losing the war in libya in any case.targeting gadaf wasnt mandate in UN resolution 1973.
Military source says coalition leader are frustrated by their failure to break the deadlock in the libya war.and gadaf ability to stand up to whatever they throw at him and even gaining ground.
While we are at it ,the can is real getting kicked arround in misrata and the rebels now are full understanding the full meaning of what they started.

After NATO air strikes on one of the Libyan leader's compounds in Tripoli, Moammar Gaddafi has been shown on Libyan state TV. Meanwhile, the African Union has been mediating the two sides on a possible solution to the conflict in the North African country.
Moammar Gaddafi was shown meeting with tribal elders on Libyan state TV on Monday, just hours after NATO airstrikes destroyed parts of his compound in Tripoli.
Guided bombs destroyed a multistory library and office in the Bab al-Aziziya compound. The building was turned into a pile of twisted metal and broken concrete slabs.
A government spokesman say 3 people were killed and 45 others injured.
Moussa Ibrahim, Libyan Government Spoksman, said, "To attack this building is unnecessary and is another proof that the coalition forces are not seeking peace, are not seeking the protection of civilians but they are seeking political assassination."
While NATO says the site was targeted as a military command post, it also delivered a strong message to the embattled leader that the alliance is widening its range of targets.
Gadhafi is trying to keep control of western Libya, while rebels control most of eastern part of the country.
On Monday, Libya's foreign minister Abdelati Obeidi and two representatives of the rebels met with African Union officials to discuss a possible solution to the Libyan conflict. AU officials say a ceasefire should be the first step.
Abdelati Obeidi, Libyan Foreign Minister, said, "Nobody is rejecting the roadmap except those in Benghazi. I think they should go with the common sense with the world community and sit down and speak our differences, starting from ceasefire, observers, and then we can see what the needs of all Libyan people are"
The foreign minister and the rebels will also hold separate meetings with representatives of international groups, including the United Nations and European Union.
Earlier this month, rebels rejected a plan by the AU to halt the civil war in Libya, because it did not include the departure of Muammar Gaddafi and his sons. When asked whether or not they would be willing to meet with government officials directly, one representative said 'No'.

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The bombing by NATO warplanes on the residence of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is not an assassination attempt, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday.
"It is certainly not the policy of the coalition, of this administration, to decapitate, or to effect regime change in Libya by force," he told reporters.
He insisted that the goal of the military mission remains "clear", which is to "protect the civilian population, enforce the no-fly zone, and enforce the arms embargo".
Carney avoided getting further into Monday's bombing by referring reporters to NATO about the "specific decisions in terms of bombing missions".
NATO warplanes bombed the residence of Gaddafi in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, early Monday morning in an attack described by the Libyan government as an attempt on the Libyan leader's life.
A Libyan press official at the scene said that 45 people were wounded in the bombing, among whom 15 were in serious condition, and some others remained unaccounted for.
Gaddafi's office in the compound, where he often held ministerial and other meetings, was destroyed along with another multi-story structure.

'Give up now or we'll kill you,' Liam Fox warns Gaddafi

Defence Secretary Liam Fox will meet senior U.S. commanders today to draw up a final plan to finish Colonel Gaddafi. Before flying to Washington last night, Dr Fox warned the dictator and his commanders they face assassination unless they give up now.

He said: 'If the regime continues to wage war on its people, those who are involved in those command-and-control assets need to recognise that we regard them as legitimate targets.



Change of tone: British Defence Secretary Liam Fox is talking to his U.S. counterparts about targeting Gaddafi directly, and Fox has warned the Libyan leader to give himself up before it is too late

'Those who are... controlling the regime's activities against its own people, would have to recognise the risks they would have if they were there during Nato strikes.'

He added: 'Colonel Gaddafi is the one who is standing in the way of a peaceful resolution in Libya.'

Today's summit will see Dr Fox and General Sir David Richards, the Chief of the Defence Staff, hold talks with Pentagon chiefs including U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Mike Mullen, the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff.

They will discuss dramatically widening the scope of targets that Nato aircraft and drones can hit, possibly to include regime leaders.

ADDIS ABABA, April 26 (Reuters) - Libya called on the African Union on Tuesday to hold an emergency summit meeting to discuss how to deal with western air strikes.

Foreign Minister Abdelati Obeidi accused the west of aiming "to punish Africa through Libya" and to "steal its wealth and colonise it again."

He told the Peace and Security Council of the 53-nation AU in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa the organisation should invoke a mutual defence pact in response to western air strikes.

"My delegation proposes the holding as soon as possible of an extraordinary session of the Assembly of the Union," he said.

"This would "identify the ways that enable our continent to mobilise capabilities to face the external forces which aggress against us."

The AU, in which Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is one of the most influential members, wielding both financial and political clout, has been trying to broker a peaceful solution to the Libyan conflict.

Obeidi and rebels have been meeting separately with AU officials in Addis Ababa to discuss an end to the war.

The AU has proposed a solution that calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities followed by a transitional period and political dialogue.

The rebels rejected the plan earlier this month, saying any settlement must include the departure of Gaddafi and his sons.

Earlier on Tuesday an AU official accused Western nations of undermining its efforts to find a solution with its air strikes.

"I would like to point out that the pursuit of other agendas in Libya, by non-African actors, has had an impact on the implementation of the AU roadmap," Ramtane Lamamra, AU's Commissioner for Peace and Security, told AU foreign ministers.

"Attempts have been made to marginalise an African solution to the crisis, specifically the timely implementation of the AU roadmap in a way that is fully consistent with and complementary to U.N. Security Council resolutions."

Lamamra said the intervention by the coalition and NATO had failed to provide resolution of the crisis.

"The imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya and aerial bombardment by the coalition, and now by NATO, have not brought a solution to the crisis," Lamamra said.

"In fact, the military situation on the ground seems to be sliding into a stalemate."

The AU does not have a good track record in brokering peace deals, having failed recently to end conflicts or disputes in Somalia, Madagascar and Ivory Coast. (Writing by Duncan Miriri; Editing by Myra MacDonald)

'US at risk of war with China, Russia'

The US is at the risk of a war with Russia and China as its main objective behind engineering the Libyan war and Syrian unrest is to remove the two world powers out of the Mediterranean, a former US official warns.


"Washington is all for invading against Libya and is putting more and more pressure to intervene in Syria because we want to ... clear China and Russia out of the Mediterranean," Paul Craig Roberts, former assistant secretary to US Treasury in Panama City said in an interview with Press TV.

On one hand, China has massive energy investments in eastern Libya and is relying on Libya and on the other hand, Russia has a large naval base in Syria and it gives it a presence in the Mediterranean, he pointed out.

"Those two countries are just in the way of American hegemony in the Mediterranean and certainly the Americans do not want a powerful Russian fleet stationed there and they certainly don't want China drawing energy resources," Roberts added.

"Once Russia and China come to the conclusion that the Americans simply cannot be dealt with it in any rational way and are determined to somehow subdue them and do them damage, all kinds of ........

Law professor William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection points out that the text of U.N. Resolution 1973 clearly is limited to preventing attacks on civilians, not conducting offensive military operations in areas where civilians were not threatened.
Seeking U.N. authorization, but then exceeding such authorization, has two negative results. "First, whatever purported legitimacy was conveyed by the U.N. Resolution has evaporated. We no longer are enforcing a no-fly zone or protecting civilians; we are engaging in regime change and taking sides in a civil war. We may like the result, but we should not delude ourselves into thinking such result was authorized by the U.N.

Second, we have damaged our ability to obtain U.N. Security Council resolutions in the future, when we actually might have vital national interests at stake. This makes helpful resolutions on Iran more difficult to obtain, as Russia and China will be hesitant to give us an inch in fear we will take a yard.
