Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi must go, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Friday in Moscow's strongest call yet for the embattled strongman to stand down. "We believe that Colonel Gadaffi has forfeited legitimacy due to his actions... indeed we need to help him go," Ryabkov said. Yes, we are ready to admit... he needs to go," Ryabkov said on the sidelines of the G8 summit at Deauville in northwestern France. The statement marked a dramatic change of tone for Moscow, which has been critical of UN-sanctioned Western strikes on Gaddafi's forces as they try to quash a pro-democracy rebellion.

US President Barack Obama asked his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev to tell Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi that he will remain alive if he leaves the country, the Kommersant daily reported Friday. Citing a Russian official present during Obama's meeting with Medvedev on the sidelines of the G8 summit in France on Thursday, the report said Washington's proposal sounded unrealistic to Moscow.

"Such a proposal did not seem particularly realistic to Russia," the respected business daily quoted the Russian diplomatic source as saying. "We asked them: 'Do you yourselves believe that Gaddafi can be convinced to give everything up?'." Kommersant's report appears to flesh out the details of comments from Medvedev's top spokeswoman, who said on Thursday that "requests have been voiced that Russia take upon itself the role of a mediator" in the conflict.

The Moscow newspaper's source suggested that both Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were pressing Russia to accept the role of mediator because they feared the conflict was reaching a stalemate. "Acknowledging that the conflict has dragged on for too long, and the West has severed all connections with Gaddafi and his circle Russia has been offered to act as a mediator in negotiations with the Libyan leader," the source said.

Kommersant said the talks between Obama and Medvedev dragged on longer than scheduled and prompted both to be late for the G8 meeting by 25 minutes. The Russian source said Medvedev was mulling the offer and did not turn down Obama outright. "We will think it over," the Russian source told the newspaper.

DEAUVILLE, France – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has urged Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to step down immediately but warned that Moscow will not offer him an asylum.

Medvedev said Friday at a news conference at the Group of Eight summit in Deauville, France, that Gadhafi will do a good thing for Libya if he leaves the job now.

Asked whether Russia could offer Gadhafi asylum he gave a firm negative answer. Medvedev added that a place for Gadhafi to stay and other details could be discussed after he steps down.

Medvedev said he is sending his envoy, Mikhail Margelov, a top Russian lawmaker, to immediately leave for Benghazi, Libya, to conduct talks with the nation's rebels. He said that talks with the Libyan government could take place later.

NATO (Not Altogether Thought Out) will eventually get rid of Gadafi. I hate the whites' interference into other countries' affairs, but also I hate Gadafi's intention to rule Libya for life. So the 2 feelings cancell each other
