NATO has resumed airstrikes on the Libyan capital after a brief layoff, hitting several targets late Tuesday.

Witnesses say they heard loud explosions in the center of Tripoli and saw plumes of smoke.

Libyan state media say the bombings hit civilian sites, and there were reports of casualties.

The Libyan capital and its surrounding areas have been the target of regular NATO airstrikes since the alliance started its military operation in Libya in March. Libyan rebels are trying to advance on Tripoli, as the coalition carries out attacks on forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Associated Press: Libya Conflict A 'Civil War'

As Congress increases pressure on the White House to define the legal grounds for U.S. military involvement in Libya, one of the country's most influential news organizations has updated its definition of the nearly three-month old conflict.

The Associated Press is now guiding its staff to refer to the situation in Libya as a "civil war."

The move isn't just an issue of semantics. Given the media's role in helping frame debates over politics and policy, language can make a difference in public perceptions.

U.S. Invasion of Libya Set for October
Aaron Dykes, Infowars.com, June 15, 2011

Infowars.com has received alarming reports from within the ranks of military stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas confirming plans to initiate a full-scale U.S.-led ground invasion in Libya and deploy troops by October.

The source stated that additional Special Forces are headed to Libya in July, with the 1st Calvary Division (heavy armor) and three corps deploying in late October and early November. Initial numbers are estimated at 12,000 active forces and another 15,000 in support, totaling nearly 30,000 troops.

This information was confirmed by numerous calls and e-mails from other military personnel, some indicating large troop deployment as early as September. Among these supporting sources is a British S.A.S. officer confirming that U.S. Army Rangers are already in Libya. The chatter differs in the details, but the overall convergence is clear– that a full-on war is emerging this fall as Gaddafi continues to evade attempts to remove him from power.

Gaddafi son offers Libya elections

Saif al-Islam's proposal, which follows a string of concessions offered by Gaddafi that Western powers have dismissed as ploys, came on Thursday amid mounting frustration in some NATO states at the progress of the military campaign. "They (elections) could be held within three months. At the maximum by the end of the year, and the guarantee of transparency could be the presence of international observers," Saif al-Islam told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. A son of Muammar Gaddafi has announced that his father is willing to hold elections and step aside if he loses, an offer which could test the unity of the Western alliance trying to force the Libyan leader out.

'No exile'

He said his father, who has ruled the country for more than four decades, would be ready to step aside if he lost the election but would not go into exile. "I have no doubt that the overwhelming majority of Libyans stand with my father and sees the rebels as fanatical Islamist fundamentalists, terrorists stirred up from abroad," the newspaper quoted Saif al-Islam as saying. It was not clear what form the proposed vote would take. Libya has never held elections under Gaddafi and has no elected institutions.

The US dismissed the election proposal by Gaddafi's son. Victoria Nuland, a state department spokesperson, told reporters at her daily briefing on Thursday: "I think it's a little late for that," and repeated the US view that "it's time for him (Gaddafi) to go". Saif al-Islam is among three top Libyan officials wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes committed by Gaddafi's regime in bid to quell an uprising against his rule.
He made the offer as Libyan officials ruled out Gaddafi's departure during talks with Mikhail Margelov, the envoy leading Russia's efforts to end the Libyan conflict.

Tripoli targeted

It was not clear what was hit, and there was no word on casualties, as government officials did not immediately comment on the strike.
NATO warplanes have repeatedly targeted the area in and around the Bab al-Aziziya compound, Gaddafi's command centre. The North Atlantic alliance launched its air campaign nearly three months ago under a UN resolution to protect civilians after Gaddafi's troops used force to put down the rebellion against his rule in February.

The Libyan leader has described the rebels as "rats" and says NATO's campaign is an act of colonial aggression aimed at stealing Libya's oil.
Rebels in the western mountains said on Wednesday they had taken control of two villages from pro-Gaddafi forces, building on gains which in the past few days have seen them advance to within about 100km of Tripoli.Rebel forces are now fighting Gaddafi's troops on three fronts: in the east of the country around the oil town of Brega; on the edge of rebel-held Misurata, Libya's third-biggest city, and in the western mountains south-west of Tripoli.

But rebel forces show no signs of being able to break through to the capital soon. Amid the standoff, explosions continued to rock Tripoli with fresh NATO air strikes reported on Thursday morning. "From the point of view of the Libyan leadership, there cannot be any talk of Gaddafi's departure today," Interfax news agency quoted Margelov as saying.

This short movie shows the facts about those rebels who described by some as "freedom fighters". Libya is planed to be Iraq 2 , but instead of saying WMD...this time its "protecting civilian"
Libya is for Libyan...and those who say Gaddafi most go...guess what?....most of Libyan want him to stay
After all he is definitely better than a new Karazai !

NATO targets Tripoli with daytime raid

ADAM SCHRECK

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) - NATO warplanes dashed into the Libyan capital Tripoli at midday Friday, pounding a target in the south of the city that sent a thick cloud of black smoke rising high into the air.

A series of explosions rumbled across what appeared to be other parts of the city as fighter jets could by heard flying overhead. Fire engines raced through the streets, sirens blaring.

It wasn't clear what was hit or whether there were casualties. Friday is the main day of rest in Libya, with many people off work. NATO has been ramping up the pressure on Moammar Gadhafi's regime. Though most airstrikes happen under cover of darkness, daytime raids have grown more frequent.

Friday's raids follow a barrage that struck multiple targets late Thursday night

OK if that's true his people loves him, kwanini asifanye free elections?

It is aberrant when someone like Khadaphi says that. Does it means that prior to now, election in Libya was not free and fair? This muham-madan must be flabbergasted.
