The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

dah kweli gadafi gaidi, kumbe na yeye ana mpango wa kujilipua duh!

VITA YA LIBYA NI NGUMU KULIKO YA SERBIA kwa " NATO?" imeelezwa

NATO has been bombing Libya for months now, but it has not been able to break Muammar Gaddafi's grip on the oil-rich North African country.

Press TV talks with Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley, an author and historian in Washington, who argues that it is NATO's "imperialist coalition" that is nearing its breaking point.

What follows is the text of the interview.

Press TV: This looks like just another war waged by the West that civilians are bearing the brunt of it, doesn't it?

Tarpley: Well, the difference here is of course that the NATO and the CIA have an infantry and in that case it is made of people with heavy representation from al-Qaeda, the Libyan**** Islamic fighting group and various Islamist rebels and that is pretty much what the Benghazi rebel council is made up of. Their infantry is obviously a kind of rabble in arms as long as they are up in these mountains of the west and as long as they are getting plenty of arm shipments from the French which they have been getting and of course NATO airstrikes, they are able to make a certain amount of progress but what you see now as soon as they get down into that plain where Tripoli is 60 or 70 miles away they are subjected to counter attacks and I think they are going basically nowhere.

The word from CBS and BBC is that Al Qualish is now in the hand Gaddafi forces so that may be a see-saw battle, but I think the bigger picture is we are now on the eve of the 14th of July, so it is Bastille Day and this is a tremendous embarrassment for President Nicolas Sarkozy; who would have thought when he started bombing Libya on the 19th of March that we would be on the 14th of July and Gaddafi is still holding out, much longer than Serbia did under a NATO bombing campaign ten years ago.

In the meantime, we have got Norway dropping out of the air war, this was ten percent of the whole NATO effort, Norway dropping out. The Netherlands say they will continue to fly the no-fly zone but they will not bomb. Prime Minister Berlusconi of Italy says he regrets the whole thing, he was forced into it, he likes to get out of it and the Northern League, his opposition, which is going to pressure him to get of it.

Finally here in the US, we are 16 votes away in the House of Representatives from passing a resolution to cut off all funds for this neo-imperialist escapades that Obama's got going and we have got essentially the perspective that the Cole amendment, which has already has been passed by the House, is cutting off all the money to the rebels, no tainting and no weapons for these rebels because US public opinion is learning who they are and who they are al-Qaeda.

Press TV: Certainly these countries, especially the US, went to this Libya war with a plan in mind, so Where did it all go wrong?

Tarpley: The plan goes back to at least November of last year when the secrete British French treaty was signed to bomb Libya some time during 2011. The idea was to attack and loot and to spoil Libya and get the Italians out. the idea was that Libya has all of this wonderful reserve of very high quality light crude oil and it also got the man-made river, Gaddafi's huge irrigation project, which means it is one of the main concentrations of fresh water available in North Africa and in the Middle East, so those were the two targets and this was then going to become south Misrata and that is the bombing that we are seeing now except that as the euro crisis spread, all of these countries are more and more bankrupt they lack the sinews of war.

I think the NATO effort is on its ways to collapsing and at that point the entire war will come to an end because the rebels simply cannot continue without this tremendous financial, military, diplomatic, media and other support from the NATO imperialist coalition.

NATO will be Defeated in Libya
A Defining Moment for AfricaBy Gerald A. Perreira
July 15, 2011 "Libya 360" -- The argument in Libya has been won by the Al Fateh revolution. There is now a glaring truth confronting the North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) – Muammar Qaddafi has handed out over one million kalashnikovs to the Libyan people. If he was the brutal dictator that NATO would have us believe him to be, then the armed population could have turned their guns on him and the revolutionary armed forces by now, especially as they would have NATO's full backing if they did so.

Instead, on July 1st, over a million Libyans, around one third of the Libyan population, were in Green Square and the surrounding streets, to hear Muammar Qaddafi speak and to rally against NATO.

Chinese media put the number at 1.7 million and Intifada – Voice of Palestine website called it ‘the largest demonstration ever in world history'. The crowd chanted over and over again ‘We want Qaddafi' while unveiling a green flag 6 kilometers long.

The Al Fateh revolution has given the Libyan people a taste of the dignity that comes with true independence and real sovereignty. Click HERE to Read More

The problem hapa is not that the majority in Libya do not want Col Gaddafi it is just the
minority few (who are passionate enough to side with NATO) So that they overthrow him
And YES it may seem like all the hands of cards are in favour of Gaddafi but still his days
are numbered for he (Gaddaffi) is holding all the Jokers where as NATO all the spades, diamonds and hearts.....

Col Gaddafi vows he will never leave Libya

Col Gaddafi's speech was broadcast over loudspeakers in Zawiya

Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has again vowed never to leave Libya, the "land of his ancestors". His speech was broadcast to supporters in the city of Zawiya, which was taken back from rebels after fierce fighting in the early stages of the revolt. The remarks came after the US decided to recognise the opposition as Libya's "legitimate governing authority".

Overnight, blasts rocked Tripoli, as fighting continued elsewhere, including around the eastern port of Brega.

Col Gaddafi stressed his intention to remain in power. "They're asking me to leave," he said. "I will never leave the land of my ancestors or the people who have sacrificed themselves for me."

His speech was broadcast over loudspeakers in Zawiya, a town some 50km (30 miles) west of the capital which was controlled by rebel forces early on in the fighting and only retaken after a bitter battle. It was the third address by Col Gaddafi in recent days apparently aimed at showing the support he enjoys in towns where his forces are in control.

On Friday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the US no longer regarded him as the legitimate authority, and would recognise the Transnational Council (TNC), joining some 30 countries to do so.

The move means billions of dollars of Libyan assets frozen in US banks could be released to the rebels.

Russia criticises West's backing of Libyan rebels

Russia criticised on Monday the United States and other countries that have recognised the rebel National Transitional Council as Libya's legitimate government, saying they were taking sides in the civil war.

Setting Russia apart from the West, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said nations that recognised the rebel National Transition Council (TNC) were pursuing a "policy of isolation" he suggested could undermine efforts to end the five-month war.

"Those who declare such recognition stand fully on the side of one political force in a civil war," Lavrov said.

"'NATO violates UN decree in Libya' "Azikiwe
Tue Jul 19, 2011 7:2AM

Libya deals with more NATO bombardment as the northern alliance destroys Tripoli's International Airport radar antenna which is a violation of international law.

In an interview with Press TV, Abayomi Azikiwe, an editor of Pan-African News Wire, discusses the current situation in Libya.

Press TV: NATO had already been accused of overriding the UN resolution and now the attack on the international airport's radar is being called a violation of international law. Is NATO going too far?

Azikiwe: Well, of course this is a part of an overall pattern of the escalation of the bombing in Libya. Just yesterday on July 17 anywhere between 60 and 75 ordinances were dropped on Tripoli and also on the eastern suburbs of Tajura, and it's really an escalation of the ongoing conflict that has been carried out for the last four months in that oil producing North African state.

The UN resolution 1970 and United Nation resolution 1973 have both been violated, even according to what the Security Council had intended initially in regard to passing these resolutions several months ago. What has happened is that the French have violated the UN resolution 1970 by doing air drops of weapons to the TNC rebel forces inside the country, and of course 1973, [which] merely called for the protection of civilians.

Yet we have the bombing of civilian installation, government communication satellite, schools have been hit, ports have been hit, and [along with] other commercial facilities inside the country. As well as civilians, many of them in the hundreds have been killed in this bombing inside of Libya, and this represents only of the continuation of that same policies that have been carried out by the United States and NATO.

Press TV: A US state department official has confirmed talks between US officials and Gaddafi representatives. The Gaddafi side says this is the first step in repairing ties but Washington says it was asking Gaddafi to step down. Why do you think this meeting was held?

Azikiwe: I believe that the US state department and the White House are looking for a way out of this conflict. As I have acknowledged before, the bombing has been going on now for four months [and] the government in Tripoli is not budging. In fact over the last two weeks we have seen demonstrations of hundreds and thousands in Tripoli and in other cities in western parts of Libya in support of the government. Just Yesterday, Colonel Gaddafi spoke via audio tape to people inside of Libya saying that the government would not surrender, that they would not compromise with NATO.

At the same time the NATO forces are showing division within its own ranks. The Dutch government said that they are going to halt their air attacks over the country. Norway has already said that August 1 is going to be their deadline. So, with the NATO alliance breaking up in regard to this war, the US and other western European countries are looking for a way out. This is the only reason why they gave the recognition to the Transitional National Council just this past Thursday after their meeting in Istanbul, Turkey. But it really doesn't make any difference in regard to the actual conditions that are taking place on the ground in Libya. It doesn't matter if they recognize the the TNC or not, because it has very little impact on the concrete conditions that are taking place right now involving the war inside Libya, itself.

Press TV: A lot of questions have been raised about what is going to happen to the frozen Libyan assets once that TNC council has been recognized. People are saying that those large sums of money could be falling into the wrong hands.

Azikiwe: Well, I don't believe for one minute that those tens of billions of dollars are going to be handed over to the TNC forces. They have already pledged hundreds of millions for dollars to the opposition forces and there has never been any mentioning in regard to the accountability of what has happened to those funds. So, I believe very strongly that this is just a cover to loot the national treasury of Libya, and to loot their foreign assets. We are talking about hundred and twenty billion dollars in foreign asset from thirty billion here in the United States that have been frozen. So, I don't think that money is going to be turned over to the TNC, they are claiming that they have no money to continue their campaign against the Libyan government. It is just a cover to confiscate more resources from the government and the business people inside of Libya.

NATO destroys Tripoli's airport radar
Tue Jul 19, 2011 4:41AM

Tripoli International Airport's radar system
NATO warplanes have destroyed the radar antenna at Tripoli's International Airport, claiming it was used for military purposes by Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's regime.
According to a NATO statement issued on Monday, the civilian air traffic control radar tracked NATO jets and provided information to Libyan regime's air defense systems, the Associated Press reported.

"The antenna, which was previously used for civilian air traffic control, was being used by pro-Gaddafi forces to track NATO air assets in the airspace over Tripoli and to coordinate their own air defense early warning system," the statement said.

Libyans, however, said the radar targeted by NATO was used for civilian purposes, including guiding the UN and relief agency flights into the airport.

NATO said the no-fly zone over Libya made it unnecessary to use the radar for civilian purposes. It has bombed dozens of military radar sites in the four-month war.

Because of technical limitations, it is difficult to convert civilian radars to target aircraft in the same way as military radars. But civilian radars can be used to monitor the airspace and provide general information on the speed and altitude of intruders.

Civilian radars cannot track and target aircraft like military radars and it's against the international law to attack them.

A NATO official argued that this made the antenna a legitimate military target.

NATO is conducting airstrikes in Libya to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1973, and says its air campaign aims at protecting civilians. However, Libyan officials say hundreds of civilians have been killed as a result of the attacks.

Critics accuse the West of hypocrisy over the offensive in Libya, along with its silence towards the brutal crackdowns on similar anti-regime movements elsewhere in the Arab world, such as in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

US sends 'time to go' message to Gaddafi

US officials have met with representatives of Muammar Gaddafi to deliver a message that the embattled Libyan leader must go, a state department spokesperson said.

The rare meeting between US diplomats and Gaddafi envoys on Saturday was held "to deliver a clear and firm message that the only way to move forward is for Gaddafi to step down," the official said on Tuesday.

"This was not a negotiation. It was the delivery of a message," the official said in a statement issued in New Delhi, where Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, is on an official visit.

The meeting involved assistant secretary of state Jeff Feltman and two other American officials, said a senior US official, who declined to say who represented the Gaddafi government or where the meeting occurred, although he said it was not in Libya

A State Department official told CNN that the meeting had taken place in Tunis, the Tunisian capital, and had lasted three hours.

The official said the meeting had been initiated by the US following contact by senior Libyan officials which had indicated Tripoli believed Washington's commitment to Gaddafi's departure from power was less firm than its international allies.
"Senior officials in the Gaddafi regime had over a period of weeks made repeated calls to senior officials in the U.S. and in those conversations they evinced an incorrect sense that somehow the United States was in a different place from other members of the international community and that the U.S. could see a future for Gaddafi in Libya," said the official.

The meeting followed Washington's decision on Friday to formally recognise the Benghazi-based rebel National Transitional Council as the legitimate interim government of Libya at a Contact Group meeting in Turkey.

Libya's government confirmed on Monday it had held talks with US officials and welcomed discussions but only without preconditions.
"We support any dialogue, any peace initiative as long as they don't decide Libya's future from without, they decide it from within," Libyan government spokesman Ibrahim Moussa told journalist in Tripoli.

"If any country involved in this aggression against us wants to revise its position and genuinely wants peace and democracy in Libya, come to us and we will discuss everything, but do not condition your peace talks. Let Libyans decide their future."
The US is among countries contributing to a NATO-led bombing campaign sanctioned by the United Nations to prevent civilians from attack by Gaddafi forces.

The operation has also allowed rebels to make advances in their campaign to overthrow Gaddafi, who has ruled Libya since 1969.
On Monday rebels claimed they had regained control of the key oil town of Brega, 750km east of Tripoli, which has changed hands several times since fighting began in February.
South of Tripoli, rebels also control the village of Qwalish, just 100km south of Tripoli, which allows opposition fighters access to the highway running north to the capital.
