10 Great Men Who Cheated on Their Wives, and Why it Shouldnt Matter

When the governor of South Carolina was caught up in his very own sex scandal, network commentators were reaching for the political ethics playbook and asking one big question.
Should he resign?

Now, TIGER WOodS....mh!,. There are countless examples of prominent men and women who have undoubtedly changed the face of this country for the better, but had problems with cheating on the side. When we review the history of well-known extramarital affairs, we are forced to face the question: so long as a private decision (no matter how stupid) does not impact job performance, should reports of marital infidelity have the power to destroy someones professional career?
I would arguestronglythat it shouldnt.
This topic is particularly hazy in politics, but it shouldnt be. Ideally the leader of a country should be a good example to its people, but it is more important that they be competent at their job than faithful to their spouse. Politicians are notor should not beelected because of moral rectitude. Who cares? I want someone who can enact competent changes over his jurisdiction, even if he needs to bone 6 women and a dude to do it. The last 8 years in particular have lowered my standards. I may now even be willing to accept bestiality.
Let me be clear: cheating is one of the most hurtful, terrible things one person can do to another. This is certainly not an essay in defense of cheating, or an assault on the institution of monogamy, but simply an observation: if sex scandals were allowed to dismantle the lives of all great men and women, there wouldnt be any left. Sex lives should remain in the bedroom (or the Oval Office, in Clintons case) while professional accomplishments should be heard around the world.
Here are just a few of the great men and women who may have had just a couple small issues with infidelity (or 11 years of doing 2 chicks at once)

Michael Jordan

Media icon, legendary basketball player, not so legendary baseball player, and all-around good guy Michael Jordan has been mired in several cheating scandals. Jordan married Juanita Vanoy in 1989 and had two sons with her. Unfortunately, he was also allegedly seeing Karla Knafel around that time, and even paid her $250,000 to keep their relationship a secret. Juanita Vanoy filed for divorce in 2002 and got $168 million, making it the most expensive celebrity divorce on public record. She said they had irreconcilable differences (I wonder why). Despite his marital improprieties, Michael Jordan is a role model and sports icon for millions of people. Just keep this in mind: when it comes to the bedroom, dont be like Mike.

Bill Clinton

It was the blow-job heard around the world. One of the most popular presidents in recent memory, Clinton clocked a staggering 73% approval rating right AFTER the sex scandal and resultant impeachment proceedings of 1998 and 1999. In a 2007 Gallup poll, he was ranked the 4th greatest president of all time. Most people consider [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Lewinsky"]Monica Lewinskys[/ame] looks to be a bit, well, depressing, and it clearly lost the election for Al Gore, but the only people that dont like him are the brain-dead 20% that still like Bush.

James Cameron

The writer/ director/ producer has one of the best hit-to-miss ratios in Hollywood. The brain behind Terminator I and II, The Abyss, Aliens, and Titanic, James Cameron is a maestro at directing the current of pop culture. He also cheated on his first wife, Sharon Williams, with Gale Anne Hurd, who would become his second wife. He then divorced and married againand again.and again. So maybe hes not incredible marriage material, but you can bet Im going to be right there in line this December when Avatar comes out.

John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy is one of Americas most revered presidents, and also one of our most famous playboys. While his bedroom escapades were not reported by the press at the time, he is widely known to have cheated on Jackie Kennedy with many different women. Mimi Beardsley Alford, a White House intern at the time, came forward a few weeks ago to talk about her affair with the late president, naturally with a book deal on the way as well. While it is widely believed that Kennedy also slept with Marilyn Monroe, there is little evidence to prove that it happened. If the times had been different and Kennedy had been forced out of office as a result of his affairs, the Cuban Missile Crisis could have ended with disastrous consequences. As he should be, Kennedy is remembered not for his sexual proclivities, but for a contagious charm, wit, and optimism that inspired a generation of Americans.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

The man who fearlessly led the country through the Great Depression and the beginning of World War II had enough time on his hands to have multiple affairs. Talk about multitasking! Lucy Mercer was hired in 1914 as Eleanor Roosevelts social secretary and shortly afterwards began an affair with FDR that endured on and off for nearly 30 years. Eleanor discovered the affair in 1918 and even offered FDR a divorce so that he could be with her, but Lucy said she could not bring herself to marry a divorced man with 5 children. After all, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? During the war, rumors circulated about another potential affair with Princess Martha of Norway and in 1971, Roosevelts son Elliot published a book revealing that he also had a relationship with Missy LeHand, his private secretary. Or rather the secretary of his privates.

John McCain

Recent bias plays a big role in sex scandals. John McCain had an affair when he was with his first wife, Carol, but it wasnt big news during the campaign because it happened in the seventiesplus, no one wants to imagine McCain having sex. While McCain was a POW in Vietnam (if you have ears and an IQ above 30, you are aware of that part), Carol was in a serious car accident and underwent a series of surgeries (ironically paid for by none other than [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Perot"]Ross Perot[/ame]). When John returned from Vietnam in 1973 he found his wife 4 inches shorter, heavier, and bound to a wheelchair or crutches. A couple years later, for reasons we can all imagine but that dont reflect too kindly on the man, he started having a series of affairs, including one in 1979 with his future second wife, [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cindy_McCain"]Cindy[/ame]. Oops. Despite the fact that these affairs were public knowledge well before the 2008 election, McCain still won the Republican nomination, and nearly won the presidency.

Donald Trump

The American business tycoon, socialite, and television personality cheated on his first wife, Ivana Trump, with socialite Marla Maples. Their heavily publicized divorce fueled the gossip columns, and soon after their [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivana_Trump"]divorce[/ame] was finalized, Donald married Marla. It ended up being pretty expensiveand ultimately unnecessary, since Donald and Marla would only last another 7 years. He is now on his third wife, and it is anyones guess if she will be the next to hear, Youre fired! But lets be honest now. Trump is one of the wealthiest and most successful business moguls in America. Does anyone really expect him to be a committed and monogamous family man?

Prince Charles

Charles Philip Arthur George is the oldest child of Queen Elizabeth II. His early sexual exploits made significant tabloid fodder and during that time he was advised by his great uncle that the man should sow his wild oats and have as many affairs as he can before settling down. The words every man wants to hear! Charles met Diana in the summer of 1980 and under pressure from his father proposed to her in February 1981. After their wedding, the high profile marriage [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Charles"]was on the rocks [/ame]after only 5 years when it turned out Prince Charles was still seeing Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall (who he dated in his younger days) in the early 1980s. After the death of Princess Diana in 1997 (at which point Camilla and Charles had been together for over a decade) they married in 2005. Royal oops.

Morgan Freeman

The man has played God. He also won an Academy Award. While Morgan Freeman has made a career out of playing likable, respectable, all-around good guys, the actor and producer is currently mired in what is likely to be a very expensive divorce. The details of Morgan Freemans affair(s) are more prone to speculation because news about them has broken relatively recently. Somewhat credible sources have been talking about an affair with Mary Joyce Hays, an aspiring writer, with a source reporting that they have been seeing each other for about a year. Another just-breaking story has other less credible sources going on about an alleged decade long affair with his 27 year old step-granddaughter, EDena Hines. Might turn out to be a big oops. Or just tabloid sludge.

Rudy Giuliani

Former mayor of NYC and presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani made headlines (and tabloid fodder) when he split up with his wife Donna Hanover over his affair with Cristyne Lategano saying that, For several years, it was difficult to participate in Rudys public life because of his relationship with one staff member. As if one affair wasnt enough, he was also seeing Judith Nathan when he was mayor and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Giuliani"]billed the city for some of the expenses[/ame], an issue that arose during his presidential bid. Despite all of this, Rudys multiple women didnt prevent him from mounting (and later destroying) a respectable campaign for the presidency. Yet another example of selective moral outrage on the part of the American people.

Naturally, this list could be much, much longer. Many men (and women) cheat, but it shouldnt come to define their public persona. Furthermore, not all affairs are created equal.

Tiger Woods case shows if you wed the wealthy, then watch out

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Contrary to what you might think, it's not easy being married to one of the world's wealthiest men, psychologists and marriage counselors say. And it's really tough when he's one of the world's best athletes.
Just ask the parade of women embarrassed to learn that their high-profile husbands cheated on them -- from Kobe Bryant's wife to Hillary Clinton. And now, Tiger Woods' admitted "transgressions" have catapulted his wife, Elin, to the top of that list.
"The wives of the rich and famous really are in a different position from the rest of us -- at least if you expect the men to be monogamous," said Cathie Helfand, who with her husband, Israel, has counseled well-known clients at their Vermont marriage retreat. "If you're married to a rich and famous man and you want to hold on to him, treat him as if he's desired."
There are perils and pitfalls for any marriage, but for the rich, famous and powerful, the temptations and opportunities for trysts are even greater. They can travel, they can spend a lot of money lavishing trips and gifts on a lover -- and, if their marriage doesn't work out, they won't face financial ruin.
"Wealthy people crave stimulus," Israel Helfand said. "They are adrenaline junkies. The pursuit of happiness, for them, is more interesting than happiness."
Chased by beautiful men and women, they start to believe what their handlers are saying about them: that they are the greatest athletes, attorneys or politicians.
"They begin to believe all the hype about themselves -- and they become like a 5-year-old," Israel Helfand said. "They think they are the center of the universe."
Among pro athletes, the problem is even worse, says Los Angeles marriage therapist Holly Hein, because many are stuck in a sort of perpetual adolescence: getting paid to play games.
"When you get in sports, you get into it in adolescence," Hein said. "How much experience do you have in other things? You haven't really grown up, and you're stuck in that realm."
Among the tight-knit circle of professional athletes, she suspects that cheating has become a part of the culture. "They all encourage one another ... It's a very adolescent reaction."
Not so different?
In some ways, the Woodses and other famous couples are like the rest of us.
Most marriages go through stressful periods, the Helfands said. Couples sometimes struggle about seven years after they meet -- commonly called the "seven-year itch" -- and when the kids move out of the house. Yet many couples, such as the Woodses, wrestle with marital problems when their children are toddlers.
"That trashes most marriages for a while," Cathie Helfand said. "Women go through a stage where their body is not their own."
Adds her husband: "For a man, all of a sudden, it feels like my kids own my wife's body. So what am I going to do? A lot of men go back to work, or they spend hours surfing on the Internet."
Infidelity is more common among men who make a lot of money, said Brad Wilcox, a sociology professor and director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia. A 2001 study found that it was 50 percent more common among men earning $75,000 or more, he said.
For those who've had affairs, the results often aren't pretty.
"When you look at predictors of divorce, infidelity is one of the strongest predictors," Wilcox said. "Couples who know their spouse has been unfaithful are 300 percent more likely to divorce than couples who don't know."
The exception, Wilcox said, is among the well-to-do.
"The wives of rich men," he said, "are very forgiving."
Athlete groupies
Once the domain of rock bands, a groupie culture has invaded the professional-sports world. Now, when athletes are playing on the road -- whether it's an NBA team in another city for a road game or pro golfers at a tournament -- the bars and lobbies of hotels where they're staying are filled with young women angling for a chance to meet the athletes.
As a former pro tennis player and coach, Dr. John F. Murray witnessed the groupie culture firsthand.
And athletes, he said, are vulnerable.
"They're in different cities, so they have short-term flings," Murray said.
Murray said he doesn't think most athletes look at out-of-town trips as opportunities for trysts. "It's not that they're wanting to stray. They're presented with an inordinate amount of opportunities. And you can often make mistakes."
Experts say the Woodses' marriage can be saved if they receive counseling and want to work things out. News reports have said the couple are already undergoing intensive marriage therapy at their Windermere home. To make it work, however, both husband and wife must talk about what is missing in their marriage, the Helfands said.
"The majority of marriages, after infidelity, can be saved and be improved," Israel Helfand said. And surviving infidelity can be a good thing, "because it really shakes the system."

24 percent of American men ages 45 to 60 say they've cheated at some point in their marriages
16 percent of American women in that age group say they've cheated.
18 percent of men 18 to 44 say they've cheated.
12 percent of women in that age range say they've cheated.
In the 1970s, 63 percent of men and 73 percent of women said they thought marital infidelity was "always wrong."
Today, 78 percent of men and 84 percent of women say infidelity is always wrong.

On his new album, Street's Disciple, Nas commands your attention: He forces you to hit the rewind button a few times before his verses are finished, then makes you ask the person nearest to you, "Did you hear that?" There's plenty of fodder for discussion stored within his double-disc set, which came out on Tuesday.

A track that has everyone talking is disc one's "These Are Our Heroes" (released to the streets with the title "Coon Picnic") on which Nas raps, "Let's hear it, one for the coons on UPN 9 and WB who 'yes massa' on TV/ Whatever happened to Weezy, the Red Foxxes who never got Emmys but were real to me?"

O.J. Simpson, Taye Diggs and Tiger Woods are among those he lashes out at. NBA star Kobe Bryant, however, catches most of the heat on the record, being called out by name and compared to Toby from the miniseries "Roots."

"You can't do better than that?/ The hotel clerk who adjusts the bathroom mat?" Nas says in his verses, referencing Bryant's much-publicized criminal charge for sexual assault in Colorado. "You beat the rap, jiggaboo, fake n---a you, you turn around then you sh-- on Shaq."

Nas recently said he was contemplating releasing the song as a single but did not know if media outlets would be able to embrace it.

"It's a fun record," Nas insisted. "I pick out certain guys that's heavy in the media who whether they're athletes, rappers, whatever I think [they're] cooning. I don't know if radio and TV are ready for those images, but they should be, because that's what hip-hop is."

A song that Nas is almost sure he will release in the near future is "Virgo," with Ludacris and Doug E. Fresh. The song has already made its way onto mixtapes (see "Mixtape Monday: Young Buck Gets Shine On G-Unit City, Luda Talks Birth Of 'Virgo' ").

"That joint was fun," he said. "Doug E. Fresh is one of the greatest entertainers and one of the guys I looked up to. Ludacris is witty, fun and one of the tightest lyricists out there. All of us are cool, and one of the main reasons is we share the same sign.

"Doug does the beat box on the record," he continued, "so it reminds you of a Slick Rick, 'La Di Da Di'-style [song]. On 'La Di Da Di,' Slick Rick was having fun talking about this girl he bumped into. It's vulgar, it's funny, and Ludacris brings that effect to it. Being a fan of Slick Rick, I bring that Slick Rick/ New York vibe to it."

Nas said he and Fresh originally did the song together but decided to ask Ludacris to join the collaboration because he and Luda had been talking about working on another song (the two first rapped together on Nas' "Made You Look" remix) and because Cris is a Virgo.

"Our birthdays are close to each other," Nas said. "We've been talking about doing a birthday party together, and this song is like a party on wax."

Another major collaborator on Street's Disciple is Busta Rhymes. He laid down the chorus for "Suicide Bounce," a song which also features newcomer Quan (Quan, an MC from VA, is the man Nas says he's passing the baton to as the new hot MC on "Just a Moment").

" 'Suicide Bounce' is based off when you feel pressured and you feel like you can't take it, but you're not dumb enough to take your life," Nas said. "You feel like you want to do something to somebody, you just wanna go off. The energy of the record is to keep you going, push you forward, keep you bouncing instead of calling it quits. Busta Rhymes is on the hook, and he brings the energy. It felt like 'Hate Me Now.' "

Love and hate are the themes of "War," which Nas calls his most personal record on the double opus.

" 'War' is [about] my baby-mama drama," he said. " 'War' talks about when my daughter was born and me first being on the scene with stardom. It kinda went to my head. Me and her mom were young. It just shows what happens to the household when we run and speed into things. I don't really wanna blame anybody, even though I did go through extra-crazy scenarios. I still don't point the finger; I'm the bigger man. I think everything is an experience, and I feel you learn from everything. That record got personal because I named the years and dates from where I'm at."

Believe it or not, Nas says it's that style of record that makes him second-guess himself.

"You lay the record down, and then you don't want nobody to hear it," he said. "[You ask], 'Are they going to judge me?' After it's laid, I'm scared, and I don't want the record to come out. I'm like, 'Let's change it.' It's too late by then. But I say forget it and just let it be out."

Nas admits he's a little weird. Luckily he has two soul mates, his fiancee, Kelis, and his child, Destiny, to help keep him sane.

"They're my therapists," he said. "I'm a tortured, torn, insane guy. They make me feel great."

Kelis, who appears twice on the album (see "Nas Salutes The Ladies, Past And Present, On Upcoming LP"), acted as muse for some of his rhymes. "She was there for a lot of it," Nas said. "She helped me out on two songs just [her] talking to me inspired me."
