Two people have been confirmed dead and 14 others injured after a five storey building collapsed at Mwembe, Kisii town near the Kisii-Kilgoris highway.

County director disaster management officer Julius Tinega said the victims succumbed to injuries at Christamarriane hospital where they were rushed for treatment.

Other victims are admitted at the Kisii Referral Hospital, he said.

"I can confirm that so far two people have succumbed to injuries while 14 are admitted," Tinega said at the scene.

He said the number of those trapped is still unknown but will be disclosed upon completion of the rescue operation.

Tinega said the rescue operation has however been hampered by lack of equipment.

Only one bulldozer was on site to assist in the rescue hours after the building came down some minutes to 8am.

Tinega said they have consulted the national office in Nairobi for assistance.

Last year, a number of people died after an eight storey building collapsed in Kisii Town.

Officials say 1 body found after Kenya building collapse

By Tom Odula | AP March 18

NAIROBI, Kenya — A female body has been recovered from the rubble of a building collapse in Kenya’s capital as search and rescue work has been called off, an official said Sunday.

Nairobi’s police chief Joseph ole Tito said the operation had been completed in the debris of the four-story guest house that collapsed Saturday morning in Ruai area on the outskirts of the capital.

Joseph Gichangi, the area police chief, said receipts showed two couples checking into the guest house but leaving before the collapse.

Building collapses have become common in Nairobi, where 4 million people live in low-income areas or slums. Housing is in high demand and unscrupulous developers often bypass regulations.

After eight buildings collapsed and killed 15 people in Kenya in 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an audit of all the country’s buildings to see if they were up to standard. The National Construction Authority found 58 percent of buildings in Nairobi were unfit for habitation.

In 2016, a building collapse in another low-income area killed 37 people and injured 70. The rescue work took days, and a baby and a pregnant woman were among those pulled to safety.

Police are hunting for the owner of a six-storey building under construction in Joyland Estate, Juja town, which collapsed on Wednesday night during torrential rains.

The building was not occupied and no one was injured. Authorities said construction was substandard and the site had been ordere closed last year.

A neighbor, who requested anonymity, said that the building collapsed at 11 pm. “I was going to bed when I heard a loud thud. I went out and found it was the building adjacent to my house that collapsed.”

National Construction Authority regional coordinator, Erick Musenda said that the site had been closed twice in August and in late December last year over substandard works and lack of approval documents.

“We have ordered the developer to stop constructing the building twice but he has defied the orders. He has been using substandard materials and has not been following the construction procedures,” he said.

In November last year, two construction workers died after building stones fell on them, according to Juja OCPD, Patricia Nasio.

Kiambu County Housing and Urban Planning Chief officer, James Ndung’u said they have been tracing the owner, who has been overseeing construction works at night. They said he would be charged with manslaughter in the falling stones case, violating building regulations, negligence and carrying out construction without approval.

Residents said that cracks had started appearing on the walls on Wednesday, adding that construction was done in haste to accomodate JKUAT students.

Locals blamed the county government of failing to inspect the construction.“It was a tragedy in waiting. The county government must take responsibility. Why are they risking lives of innocent people?” resident Victor Kimaru said.

Musenda said that the area where the structure was built was once a wetland. He said NCA will partner with NEMA, the Water Resources Authority and the county government to profile wetland areas where construction activities require monitoring.

Kenya: Five-Storey Building Collapses in Kakamega

By Benson Amadala
A five-storey building under construction collapsed Tuesday night in a residential estate in Kakamega town, damaging nearby homes.

Kakamega police boss, Joseph Chebii, said there were no injuries reported during the incident at Jua Kali estate.

NARROW ESCAPE

A frightened resident, whose house was damage, narrated how he narrowly escaped as the under construction building started caving in late Tuesday night.

"I had just arrived home at 9pm when I heard the watchman shouting, warning us to leave our houses because the building was coming down," said Gerald Njoroge.

Njoroge said he quickly dashed to the door accompanied by his two brothers just in time before the building collapsed in a cloud of dust.

"We were so lucky. The debris flew in all directions and part of the wall came down on the front part of our house, just after we had dashed to safety," said Mr Njoroge.

A relieved mother, Jane Wanjiku Muhura, said she was still at work when she was informed about the incident.

"I was so worried about my children in the house since we live right next to the building. I rushed home and found they had manage to escape to safety," said Ms Muhura.

Police have cordoned off the scene with officials from the National Construction Authority, National Environment Management Authority and the Kakamega County set to investigate cause of the collapse.

"If we find that there was negligence on the part of the owner, we will charge him. We are so lucky that nobody was injured in the incident but we are investigating the matter," said Chebii, the Kakamega Central police boss.
