An audit report is embarrassing for Idris Rashid just as the question of renewing his mandate at the head of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company is being raised.

Just as his mandate as managing director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) is about to expire in December, Idris Rashid is taken to task in the preliminary report by the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) for “squandering” 1.4 billion shillings (€ 690,000) on refurbishing the residences of Tanesco’s directors, including his own. The CAG is also investigating a bank loan of Tsh 300 million (€ 150,000) that Tanesco contracted and may also have been “squandered”.

The Minister for Energy William Ngeleja will now have to study the CAG’s report and determine whether Rashid had indeed ordered this expenditure so that he could subsequently purchase his official residence for a lower price after it has been renovated. Questions were raised in Parliament about this matter by an MP in the ruling party, Richard Ndassa. Tanesco’s managing director is also reproached for spending Tsh 180 million (€ 90,000) on a luxury car and six other vehicles for Tsh 160,000 each (€ 80,000) for the company’s directors, flagrantly contravening the directives issued by Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda.These disclosures occurred just as President Jakaya Kikwete has to decide whether to renew Rashid’s mandate at the head of Tanesco, or replace him. Nevertheless, Rashid has plenty of support, beginning with the chairman of Tanesco’s board, Peter Ngumbullu.

But he also has his detractors, who are all too eager to remind all and sundry that Rashid has been questioned by the UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in his capacity as a former governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), as part of the investigation into the sale of civilian radar equipment to Tanzania by the British company BAE Systems.

Let me put it bluntly, Kikwete doesn't care much about our nation interest compared to the welfare of his cronies. Watanzania, even though it is sad but it is also true that we have made a big mistake to elect JK and we are going to pay dearly. You don't have to be a neurosurgeon to realize that our country is heading in the wrong direction and this one among classic examples that vividly shows how corrupt Kikwete's administration has became.
