Former Cabinet minister Simeon Nyachae on Tuesday endorsed Jubilee Alliance's Uhuru Kenyatta for president.

The move came as Mr Kenyatta hit out at Prime Minister Raila Odinga's proposed solutions to land problems.

Addressing a rally at Gusii Stadium, Mr Nyachae who had earlier announced that he had retired from active politics, said he was forced to declare his stand following immense pressure from the community.

The Ford People party founder said after careful consideration, he decided to back Mr Kenyatta because "he was trustworthy", adding that the community had been cheated by former regimes.

Mr Nyachae asked Mr Kenyatta to protect the interests of the community, especially those who had invested outside the region.

"Of all the presidential candidates, only Uhuru is best suited for the job and the only leader capable of moving this country forward," Mr Nyachae said.

He asked the community not to be deceived by leaders with empty rhetoric.

He recalled working with Mr Kenyatta's father Jomo, Kenya's first president, describing their relationship as cordial.

However, a section of the crowd at the stadium walked out in protest after Mr Nyachae's endorsement of Mr Kenyatta.

Mr Nyachae stated that it was time for the youth to take up the leadership of the country.

"For many years the youth have been told they are leaders of tomorrow, I want to tell you the time is now," he noted.

Mr Kenyatta promised to tackle unemployment and improve the agricultural sector of elected president.

He argued that the best solution to land woes in the country would be to use the parcels to create employment.

"Instead of threatening to repossess stolen land, they should find ways of creating employment to the youth to work in those lands so that they can produce food and improve the country's economy," he said.
