Double-heading may be adopted for SGR locomotives

Engineers at the Kenya Railways Corporation have hinted at using the double-heading technique to operate the freight wagons on the standard gauge railway.

Double-heading entails using two locomotives at the front of a train, each being operated individually by its own crew.

Engineer Jesse Gatukui says the technique is ideal as it gives the train additional power, which a single locomotive cannot haul due to terrain or excessive weight. This method also saves on transportation time. “One locomotive can haul between 20-25 wagons, but when you use two locomotives, you are able to haul up to 40 wagons at a go,” Gatukui said.

This mode of operation has been employed in the UK and other developed countries. In the UK, double-heading is used for all trains hauling nuclear waste flasks for security reasons. This is because the trains cannot be left behind if they stall, in the event one of the locomotives breaks down.

Double-heading guarantees a continuation of service because when one engine fails, the remaining one gets the train to its destination.

I am Imagining the kind of support facilities that will sprout along this SGR, Eateries, Sleeping places........ I am lost for words

What are your top 3 stations? I love Emali, Mombasa and Nairobi, in no particular order. Spoilt for choice.

I wonder how the stations in the second leg of the SGR will look like heading to Kisumu???

I would expect no less. Regardless of who is president then. I think the bar has been set high enough, and anything below what we've seen will be catastrophic.

Kenyans wameonja mazuri. No President would dare deliver less. It would be political suicide.

The standards should still be set higher than this. We are capable

Many threads on this forum have been hijacked by individuals who appear to be enraged by this project. Falsehoods and exaggerations have been deployed to muddy the waters and to disparage what is a paradigm shift in the Kenyan transportation sector. This is a thread for the fans of the new SGR. We hope to document the completion of the first phase, the electrification of the line and the extension of the line to Kisumu.
  1. In the first phase, this new line will reduce the time it takes to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa from 8 hours to 4 hours.
  2. Diesel passenger trains will travel at 120 km/ hr but the speeds are set to double to 240 km/hr once the line is electrified.
  3. In the second phase, the entire line will be electrified in 5 years.

33 stations
9 Passenger stations in the first phase
609 km
