China may help Zanzibar build nuclear power plant

Feb. 24, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG), one of China's two major nuclear power plant operators, recently signed a letter of intent with Zanzibar's main power company to help construct its first nuclear power project, said CGNPG on Tuesday on its website. The plant will be situated in Tunguu, a southern coastal in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar said China will help build one nuclear power plant in the energy-starved Muslim nation, tightening its bonds with Beijing. The nuclear agreement was among a dozen economic cooperation accords signed during China's president recent visit to Zanzibar, however, Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said Thursday that China, which signed the NPT in the 1990s, was willing to continue helping Zanzibar with its nuclear programs dreams — provided they are peaceful, in line with its international commitments and agreed to be supervised by the IAEA.

Faced with an energy crunch resulting from fast economic growth, Zanzibar plans to have 40 million kw of installed nuclear capacity by 2020.
kwa nini wasitupe silaha kabisa halafu muone ,kwanza tunazielekeza huko huko, mliko, mtakoma kutuchonganisha

I remember kwenye another defunct forum hii issue ilikuwa raised - jamaa mmoja kule aliuliza swali zuri sana: Iwapo hatuwezi kushughulikia takataka za nyumbani (household garbage, etc), utapishi wa vyoo etc etc how the hell are we going to take care of nuclear waste??

Kama mdau hapo juu alivyosema rasilimali saizi yetu zipo tayari and I think we need a resthink of some kind.

1. HEP ipo na ndio tunayoitegemea sasa; kufanikisha we need good rains, absence of cattle at the source of the big rivers e.g. Ihefu, bonde la Usangu, maintenance of existing mitambo/infrastructure etc. Newr sites like Stiglers Gorge can produce upwards of 3000MW*

2. Natural Gas: our next best thing so far; Mtwara Lindi already connected to that gas to electricity program thru Artumas. Effort should be done to electrify the Mtwara Corridor going into Tandahimba, Newala, Masasi, Ndanda, Tunduru, Namtumbo Songea, Peramiho, Kigonsera, Mbinga all the way to Mbamba Bay. Going up the way towards Dar won't be a bad idea, too.

3. Makaa ya mawe Liganga/Mchuchuma/Kiwira: abundance of coal is almost a blessing despite its effects on the ozone layer. But a solution is there as paying 33% more for a "cleaner" coal plant is worth it!

4. Other alternative energies, wind, solar, bio-fuels, etc: Wind is the one that is receiving a lot of chatter right about now, and supposedly we have tons of it in numerous places e.g. Mombo/Same corridor, and another thread says Mwakyembe is involved in a company that is in Makambako and Singida for trials. Up there in Tanga gentleman by the name of Shamte is producing electricity from the sisal remains, the waste product is excellent fertilizer! He said that when fully operational it can produce upwards of 17 megawatts*, enough to power the whole of Tanga, Kilimanjaro and Arusha.

NOTE: * not sure which one is commonly used, kilowatts or megawats - forgive me but I hope you get my point.

Gelange Vidunda,

Nitakujibu bila ya mpangilio maalum...

To sum up your response... You have not disregarded the use of Nuclear energy- I think you need a Big UP!

But you have shown concern of how we are going to take care or rather disposal of nuclear waste.

According to John G. Collier... "Designers of Nuclear Power Stations do asses the risks and consequences beyond the basis adopted for design"

Apparently they do have what is called the three C's
1-Control the reaction
2-Cool the Fuel
3-Contain Radioactivity(Waste and non waste I pressume)

In such, I do believe there is a proper and safe way to do this(disposal of waste) since technology has grown this should not be of big a concern atleast at this "Thinking stage"

Elimu inahitajika, pamoja na kuplan vizuri, which any able minded body will do to avoid, yaaagh!

Natural gas can go concurrently with Nuclear energy!

Other alternative... sisi watanzania ni 'NYUKI' Tulifikirie hili

Asante

Mkuu Koba,

Niliandika kirefu how we can do this in Tz, how we can come over those known threats, starting from environment etc

hapa napiga UTURN kubwa, ktk maelezo ya wengi hawajaeleza technical problems. tumebaki kusema ufisadi, bado, unajua..., yes we need to go in stages, but if we can run the place we needed to walk whats wrong with that??

Salute you!

Tanzania accented its nuclear ambitions yesterday, saying plans were underway to start uranium extraction ready for the country to revert to one of the world`s highly rated renewable energies.

Energy and Minerals minister, William Ngeleja made the revelation when answering journalists` questions at a news conference he called in Dar es Salaam yesterday to introduce the new mining consultative committee.

Nasikia kule Namtumbo Songea wameshaanza kuchimba kitambo!
Au ndo ndani ya utafiti.

Will it make any difference to the lumpen in Namtumbo or places of the like? We have had Tanzanite in Mererani, but still the place is undeveloped as ever and the people are just miserably poor, we have had Gold in the Lake zone and sadly the story is the same.

Tanzania Set To Start Uranium Mining By '12 - Minister

2 hours, 49 minutes ago
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Tanzania is set to start mining uranium by 2012 following the discovery of the metal at various sites across the country, the minister of energy and minerals development said Monday.

William Ngeleja said the government was drafting a bill to pave the way for uranium mining, as the country seeks to exploit the metal, which has been identified mainly in Tanzania's central and northern regions.

"The government has formed a special committee to guide the exploitation of uranium," he said.

Ngeleja said geologists identified the metal at 20 sites in the country.

The first uranium mines are expected to be opened near river Mkuju in, Ruvuma Region and at Manyoni and Bahi Districts in the central region, he said.

Ngeleja said the government has licensed up to 70 companies to explore for uranium. Australia-based Mantra Resources Ltd. (MNRZF) and Uranex NL (UNX.AU) have both expressed interest in setting up uranium mines. Company officials couldn't comment immediately.

The minister said Mantra has drilled 646 rocks in the past three years and has established uranium reserves of about 39.9 million metric tons in its license areas.

Tanzania's mining sector is dominated by gold and the country is Africa's third-largest gold producer after Ghana and South Africa.

Kuna ma sheria duniani against nuclear proliferation, okay?

Twenty sites rich in the precious resource identified

Experts commissioned by the government to explore for uranium some three years ago have identified 20 sites whose underneath rocks are believed to be rich in the world’s precious resource, it was revealed yesterday.

Energy and Minerals minister William Ngeleja revealed this at a news conference here yesterday, saying the government was optimistic mining of the world’s much talked about alternative energy source would begin in 2012.

The sites are Dodoma, Singida, Bahi, Kondoa, Manyoni, Mtwara, River Mkuju, Luwegu, River Madaba, Selous, Namtumbo, Songea, Newala, Tunduru, Nachingwea, Galapo, Lake Manyara, Arusha, Mbulu and Simanjiro.

According to him, the plan was to begin with the extraction of the resource at River Mkuju in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region and also in Manyoni and Bahi Districts in Dodoma.

Ngeleja said a bill for enacting a new law to guide uranium mining operations in the country was in preparation and would be tabled in Parliament for approval in October this year.

He also said that the government has formed a special committee to deal with uranium, with members drawn from his ministry, vice-president’s office, the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) and attorney general’s office.

Other members come from the ministries of Health and Social Welfare, Communications, Science and Technology, the Tanzania Chamber of Minerals and Energy and also from Mantra and Uranex Company.

If everything goes as planned, mining companies are expected to start paying corporate tax three years from the launch date of mining activities.

Ngeleja said 70 companies have been awarded uranium exploration licences in the country and so far two companies - Mantra Resources Limited and Uranex NL Company - have shown ability and interest to start mining.

Mantra Limited started exploration in 2006 and over the last three years made geological surveys that involved drilling of 646 rocks.

The rock samples obtained were sent to Australia for specialized laboratory tests, which proved that about 39.9 million uranium tonnes were available in the area, noted Ngeleja.

The identified resources, he said, were enough to generate USD 80 million in revenues per year over a period of not less than ten years, basing on the current market price for uranium.

The other company, Uranex NL, also started exploration in 2006 and recently it reported that there are 14 million tonnes of Uranium at Manyoni and Bahi. Experts of the company were confident that with the current pace of preparations, mining operations would begin in 2011.

“We have been assured of safety of our people living in identified uranium sites,” he said, in what appeared to be an early attempt to calm down the people over fears that uranium mining operations might trigger yet another environmental hazard that could result to human and property loss.

We Ubungoubungo, Unataka tutumie Uranium kuzalisha umeme..he he he..

President Jakaya Kikwete shakes hands with International Atomic Energy Agency director general Mohamed El Baradei after their talks at the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday. El Baradei is in Tanzania for a two-day official visit.

NIMEMUONA HUYU JAMAA HAPA BONGO HII NI ISHARA KWAMBA MAMBO YA URANIUM BONGO YAMEIVA KUNA MTU YEYOTE MWENYE HABARI...

That is correct..ameshaanza kunusanusa nini chawezajiri maana jirani zetu Malawi wao wako step nzuri zaidi kwenye uranium deposit iliyo mpakani kabisa na TZ. Hapa kwetu kuna kampuni iliyokuwa inaitwa Western Metals Pty ya Australia(Wamebadili jina sasa hivi) kule Nachingwea. Kabla ya economic crisis, walikuwa wanaendelea vizuri. Sijui sasa wao na makampuni mengine yenye project za exploration sehemu kadhaa wako kwenye stage gani. However, it is good Mohamed El Baradei has taken a proactive role, ili mambo yasije kumkuta by suprise.

Uranex Commences Final Stage Of Pre-Feasibility Study At Manyoni Uranium Project In Tanzania

Published: 27-Oct-2009

Uranex NL (Uranex) has commenced the final stage of the pre-feasibility study at its wholly owned Manyoni uranium project in central Tanzania following additional leach test work and initial results from the 2009 infill drilling programme. The environmental base line study is advanced with air and groundwater monitoring stations established and data recording proceeding.

Metallurgy

Discrete samples of the upper Schrockingerite mineralisation horizon, the lower Carnotite mineralisation horizon and a composite of the two horizons were subjected to water and acid leach test work in the Mintek, Johannesburg, Research Facility, under GRD Minproc supervision.

The final metallurgical stage of the Pre-Feasibility Study is researching a base case processing flow sheet consisting of scrubbing, size reduction to minus 1mm, conventional acid leaching and resin-in-pulp adsorption. The achievement of the recoveries in the short leach time frames continues to indicate the potential of lower quartile processing costs and a reduced size plant for a given throughput.

The interstitial nature of the uranium mineralisation results in it predominantly reporting in the finer size fraction, thus resulting in a high proportion of the feed material being rejected in the coarse fraction.

Additional Mineralisation

Preliminary results from the 170 drill holes completed to date, of the 400 hole resource upgrade programme, indicate that there is significant mineralisation, in the grade range of 200 – 1,000 ppm eU308, both beneath and outside the envelopes of the present JORC Inferred Resource estimates. The depth of the mineralisation included in the JORC Inferred Resource estimates calculated by the independent consultants Hellman and Schofield Pty Ltd, ranged from 2 metres to 12 metres below surface, with an average depth of less than 10 metres.

Mining

The mining system will be a simple free digging operation in unconsolidated material, without any drilling and blasting. It is envisaged that ore from several sites will be fed to a central processing plant: a One Plant-Multiple
Sources Scenario.

Manyoni Uranium Project (100% Uranex NL)

The Manyoni Project is situated in the northern section of the Bahi regional uranium province in central Tanzania, near the town of Manyoni, which is situated some 120 kms WNW of Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania. The sealed main trunk road and railway line from Dar Es Salaam to the Lake Victoria port of Mwanza, plus a main high voltage power line pass through the town.
The Company commenced the initial phase of the Manyoni Pre-Feasibility Study in Mid-June 2009. The internationally recognised AMC Consultants, as project managers, are responsible for the overall study management and the aspects of geology, mining, infrastructure, cost estimation and the final Study Report.

GRD Minproc is responsible for all metallurgical aspects.

Enviroworks Consulting is responsible for all environmental aspects of the study, including the social and community aspects and development of the environmental baseline for data measurement purposes.

The exploration of uranium mineralisation in the playas around Manyoni led to the establishment of JORC compliant resource estimates for portions of playas A, C and E, with the largest portions in playa C. The focus of the follow-up exploration and analysis has been the upgrading and extension of these estimates within A, C and E, with programmed extension into the other playas.
