Diagnostic Measures,.
HIV infection can be diagnosed by detecting and quantifying the amount of HIV in the body, the viral load; or it can be by detecting antibodies developed as a result of HIV infection by using HIV Rapid tests or ELISA.
HIV Antibody Tests
1.Rapid tests
2.ELISA- Enzyme Immunoassay (Enzyme-Linked-Immuno-Sorbent-Assay)
Detection/quantification
1.p24 antigen ( measure quantities of this viral antigen)
2.PCR DNA( qualitative detection of virus genetic material.
3Viral load assay( qualitative assesment of number of virus particles)
4.Viral culture growing HIV in the laboratory.
NOTE
Diagnosis depends on detection of antibodies to HIV and specifically it relies on rapid tests which are very sensitive and very specific.
Rapid tests cannot detect HIV before antibodies are made. This is called the Window Period.
A person who has just become infected with HIV goes through a stage of rapid HIV multiplication leading to a high amount of the virus in the blood before the imune system detects and tries to control the infection.
Because of the large amount of the virus in the blood, this person also has a greater likelihood of infecting others.
Since this person is also newly infected, he or she may not even know that they are HIV positive.
And even when tested he or she will be negative because his body will not yet have made antibodies against HIV
