As a non Kenyan who has lived in Kenya during Moi Era and also part of Kibaki Era....

Tribalism rears it’s head when there is a power struggle on anything...Not just the presidency but at secular activities ie employment...

When I was looking for an internship in Nairobi during my uni days there...I had to be interviewed for some reason by the company prior to commencement of the program...The person responsible was a man from Coast Province(now County 01?)..My middle name given to me by my grandmother is from Coasto (she is a quarter Coasterian)...So he asks me about it even before looking at my CV...next thing he says start the next day...I wonder if I had a bara name if I would have got the internship?...There was a guy who applied for the program who was obviously from bara was not successful...I always feel guilty about it even though my acceptance had to be approved by someone else as well...The other manager was from bara...Through the internship I landed the job .…after 2 years got another job..So what did I do? I looked for the bara guy and let him know about the opening...I practically {made}my Coasto guy employ him...

So what is my point? When there is a scramble for resources or development then the thought is...Benefit goes to {my} people first..It is the culture of the winner takes it all that is killing Africa...That is why things like cessation are being discussed...Otherwise in absence of these struggles most Kenyans live in harmony...There are cases of coming together during crisis...I was visiting Kenya during the Westgate Attack and people were saving each others lives irregardless of tribes...That was a good moment..

The politicians fan the flames of tribalism to get voted in by as many as possible..Popular rhetoric (afadhali chenu hâta kama ni kibaya)..The younger generation should look at history and do better..In my travels in the diaspora, I have witnessed strong non tribal Kenyan organisations...

Kenya needs to look at Rwanda and Burundi not so great past history and deal with the problem called Tribalism...I am not lecturing anyone just an observation..

Kumbe we have alot in common. Unajua watoto wanasikia haya mabishano yetu yote. Just imagine!!

wasilete ujinga hebu wapige kura, wanyonge ndio wataumia

Hapana ukisema hvy unakosea

You have a PROPER Understanding of Kenya. But tribalism rears itself daily, regardless of whether it's a political season or not. As a professional, I once submitted a piece of work (a design) to a govt office for a tender. Now I don't mean to brag, but it was a superb design, for that's what I do. The official in charge of the department reviewing designs refused to approve it despite it being assessed by her colleagues and external panel as being the most practicable and sensible one, because she didn't "like " my surname. I didn't get the tender. The eventual winner was a homeboy of hers and I later discovered was a nephew. The winner flopped spectacularly, needless to say. Right now, it's still a stalled project that will cost more to revive than it was initially estimated to cost!!

I have a doctor friend whose based in another part of the country who tells me to my face that alot of patients have SPAT on his face once they discovered his last name. They also say that they didn't know he was one of THOSE people judging from his accent or his comportment. And the same goes for other hospital staff. Against the backdrop of constant and daily vitriol on vernacular radio stations in that part of the country against people with surnames like his and attendant verbal violence from some workmates, he's made the decision to leave. In fact, he lives apart from his family who reside in Nairobi. He's in the process of relocating to another part of the country as he is a man after all not a machine, there's a limit to the abuse one can endure.

Tribalism is a system of privilege that denies the humanity of others and demeans that of the perpetrator. And it thrives in Kenya.

Wow just wow....now I understand why things like cessation are being thrown around....Proffessionals need to be unbiased....I’m sorry about what happened to you and your doctor friend....That is just urghhh so wrong...The education against tribalism has to start at home to change the mind set...Just seems like a dangerous path guys are taking...Someone’s name should not be the certificate to their success...We are all part of the human tribe...Do not know else to say..

Today in the professional echelons the levels of tribalism are just so so shocking. Whole govt departments are staffed by members of a select few tribes. Many are the times for instance, i have gone to KRA and found a preponderance of 1-2 tribes in the staff compliment from top to bottom. At this rate, many govt departments will go a full generation in Kenya without employing people from certain regions regardless of qualifications. The speed and ease at which you're served is directly proportional to your surname. When my kids come of age, their confusing names will either be a burden or a blessing. They carry names that show their dual heritage. In Kenya, your last name gets you everything from a casual job in govt to your being ethnically profiled and killed by the security services.
Awhile back whilst a foreign student, kenyan diplomats would ethnically profile the resident kenyans and work for/against you. If you came from that "other " tribe, and you lost your passport for instance, be prepared for a looong wait, i kid you not even a full year b4 replacement.
This should be the next topic of discussion : The ethnicisation of the kenyan work place in both private and public sectors. It's REAL.

Kumbe wanatishia kupeleka muswada bungeni baadae upigiwe kura.

Very sad state of things...I partner with a Kenyan friend on a venture in Kenya..We make an effort to offer employment to people from diverse places in Kenya based on merit and productivity...They get along fine and we actually have a fantastic team of young people...I always enjoy working in the Kenya office when there...Lets pray tribalism dies one day..

Racism, religious bigotry, tribalism and all other -isms have the same antecedents : "my" race, religion or tribe is better than "yours". For the practitioner of -isms, It's mighty important important to draw a dichotomy of us and them. And indeed we all don't look like each other or have the same holy book or speak the same tongue. We have a shared humanity, indisputable . Unfortunately in Kenya, people who believe in othering others occupy positions of authority. It stands to reason that their actions reflect what they believe, because humans do what they know and not what they don't know. Cursing out a tribalist or racist is foolhardy if you don't offer him an ideological opposite. In Kenya, the political parties play out their beliefs, and all preach ethnic division so nothing will change soon.

We are f*cked.(sorry for my French ).

Its deflating but dont give up...Things could change one day...My weakness is being too optimistic...
