A 23-year old Army Specialist based at Fort Rucker was among the three people killed in an attack on a U.S. military base in Kenya Sunday.

The family of Henry "Mitch" Mayfield Jr. confirmed to NBC Chicago that he died in the assault at Manda Bay Airfield. Two Department of Defense contractors were also killed. The Department of Defense has not confirmed the identifies of those killed in the attack. Mayfield was a native of Chicago who joined the Army in 2018.

Mayfield's Facebook page lists him as being posted at Fort Rucker. "He loved his family and spending quality time with his siblings," Carmoneta, Mayfield's mother, told the Chicago station. "I last spoke with him New Year's Day via FaceTime. We discussed him not having to go to Somalia and he told me everything was good and safe at his base. "He told me everything would be OK. Those were his last words to me," she said.

Sunday's attack came from the militant group al-Shabab and followed a U.S. strike that killed Iranian Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Later on Monday afternoon, the Department of Defense confirmed Mayfield's identity. The Evergreen Park, Illinois native was assigned to 1st Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment, 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group, which is based in Fort Rucker, Alabama, DoD said in a statement.

On 5 January 2020, the Somali Al Shabaab terrorist organisation attacked Manda Bay airfield (US Camp Simba), a joint Kenyan forces/US Africa Command base at Kenyan soil.
It is not revealed how many US military are based at Manda Bay in Lamu County (Kenya), which is situated near the Somali border. It is a public secret that, alongside the US Africa Command, the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) also uses the site, which also includes an airstrip. Types of aircraft like the Cessna 208, U-28 (PC-12), C-146 (Dornier 328), Dash 8, CN235, helicopter types like the UH-60 and MH-6, as well as unmanned aerial systems such as the MQ-9 Reaper, and the recently retired MQ-1, are frequent users of the strip.
Neither of the US commands are providing details about any potential casualties on Kenyan or US military side. But it was reported that Al Shabaab was successfully repulsed, and that the base is secured after killing at least four terrorists.

Reports say, during the Al Shabaab attack a US C-146 Wolfhound and a heavily modified Dash 8-202 (registration N8200L, construction number 455) spy plane were destroyed. Kenyan press reports add to this, saying there are several casualties on both Kenyan and US side, plus write-offs of a Kenyan aircraft, two US helicopters and several vehicles.

The Dash 8 was reported over Libya by Scramble Facebook News (SFN) in March 2018, and was again reported during similar operations in late March 2019. N8200L, a De Havilland Canada DHC-8 built in 1997, is known to be assigned to USSOCOM since June 1997. Initially it was assigned to a shadowy company in Bridgewater (VA) called "Dynamic Avlease". But its assignment changed to the USSOCOM later. (*) SFN 26mar18 "Besides the six well known US Army De Havilland DHC-8s, also known as the RO-6A, there seem to be more of those heavily modified Dash Eights."
