New Zealand runner Jake Robertson proposes to Kenyan partner at finish line of UK race
New Zealand runner Jake Robertson won the hearts of the crowd and his Kenyan girlfriend when he proposed to her after finishing second to Olympic hero Mo Farah in a major race in Britain.
Robertson pushed Farah all the way in the Great North Race in northern England on Monday (NZ time), finishing the half marathon just six seconds behind the British great. But he quickly had all the attention when he dropped to one knee and asked partner Magdalyne Masai to marry him.
She had finished fourth in the women's elite race. Masai accepted and the happy couple embraced.
After finishing 2nd, Jake Robertson proposed to fellow runner/girlfriend Magdalyne Masai, came in 4th in her event. m.bbc.com/sport/athletic…

"I didn't have it planned or anything. In the last mile it just randomly came to my mind that today was the day," Robertson told media later.
He described events as "a memorable day for us".

"I finished the race and asked the meeting organisers to find her. She said yes and I'm a happy man. Six years together and I thought it was due time. We've been speaking about it for a long time," he said.

The 27-year-old Robertson is based in Kenya with his twin brother Zane.
Jake has competed for New Zealand at world championship level and at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he finished ninth in the 5000m and seventh in the 10,000m.
British distance running legend Farah has now switched his attention to marathons with an eye on that distance at the next Olympics.
He was thrilled to win his fourth consecutive Great North Race – which runs from Newcastle Upon Tyne to South Shields - in 1:00.06 kicking clera of the Kiwi with 250m to go. He had praise for Robertson.
"Jake almost got rid of me with three miles to go because I was hurting," Farah said.
"I was just hanging on and gritting my teeth. I expected him to push on but it was a great race.
"Every part of my muscles is aching now. That was really, really tough. I have never been this sore. It's been hard to motivate myself after Zurich, after the world championships, and I haven't done as much training."
