Shifting Bones
While females are usually dubbed the more fairer, beautiful sex males are the winners when it comes to ageing of the facial bones. Using CT scans of 100 men and women, researchers at the Duke University Medical Centre in the US discovered that the bones in the human skull change as people age. The forehead moves forward while the cheekbones move back. As the bones move, the overlying muscle and skin moves as well, subtly changing the shape of the face. Not to mention our facial bones also tilt forward as we get older which causes them to lose support for the overlying soft tissues, resulting in more sagging and drooping.
These dramatic changes in the ageing of facial bones tends to happen at a significantly younger age for women than men. Womens facial bones tend to shrink at the onset of early middle age, whilst mens dont exhibit this change until they are at a retirement age, leaving them to appear physically younger for longer.
More Brawn than Expression
Even from birth men have more muscle mass and less fat than women. At puberty, the average adult male has about 150% of the lean body mass of the average female, and about 50% of the body fat. Now because men have bigger muscles than women, this also affects their facial contours, making women more facially expressive, suggesting that they may use their facial muscles more. This could also explain why men have such a hard time explaining themselves too! In both men and women, the facial muscles elongate with age as well. The average mans facial muscles will be a centimetre longer at 55 than 30 years earlier, contributing to the sagging of facial tissues and the formation of creases and wrinkles.
Tough Skin
Testosterone gives men a 70% higher sebum production than women. While this keeps their skin naturally lubricated, it also means they have larger pores and sweat more, making their skin dirtier. This might explain why after an intense work out with your boyfriend he may be sweating like a pig whilst you have produced nothing but a slight drop of sweat.
Mens skin is not only more lubricated, it is also denser. Womens skin is characterised by a smooth surface and plump texture, due to the underlying fat while mens skin contains more collagen. Ultimately this is why men have thicker skin and can appear to age more slowly than women, whose collagen production drops dramatically at menopause.
Sio kweli!!
