Confusion and panic gripped residents of Marindi Village in Suna West Constituency, Migori County, on Tuesday evening, when a 35-year-old man, who was believed to be dead, arrived unexpectedly at a funeral meeting at their home.
The man’s family was finalizing his burial arrangement on January 16, when Nicholous Okelo Nyamwanga showed up at his parents’ home.
His unexpected arrival at his own wake, sparked terror and then delight among his family and friends. Some mourners fled the funeral meeting in panic.
Nyamwanga had gone missing from home two months ago, and his family members had given up on finding him alive.
One week ago, Nyamwanga’s close friends informed his family members that his decomposing body had been spotted preserved at Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary.
They alleged Nyamwanga’s body was moved to the morgue after being retrieved from River Migori.
Nyamwanga’s father, Francis Nyamwanga, said he had visited the mortuary several times to identify the body of his son, but his attempts proved futile, given the decomposed state of the body he was scrutinising.
“I was convinced into believing the body I suspected to be my son’s was indeed his. The mortuary attendant influenced that decision,” said Francis Nyamwanga.
The tricenarian’s father said they had planned to pick the body from mortuary on Thursday, January 18 ahead of his burial, which was penciled in for Friday, January 19.
Francis Nyamwanga said horrified mourners, including the man’s wife and relatives, fled the funeral meeting.
“They later returned, and were happy to reunite with my son,” said Francis.
Francis added that his son was “shocked” to discover that his family members were organizing his burial, yet he was alive.
“The discovery shocked him. He is yet to come to his senses,” said Francis.
