Moi International Airport manager Walter Agong said the plane was in transit from Frankfurt, Germany.

"It was picking up some passengers here in Mombasa before taking off to Zanzibar," he said.

Cases of bird strikes are increasingly being cited at the cause of emergency landings at the Mombasa airport.

In October last year, a Turkish Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a bird was sucked into one of its engines.

The flight was bound for Istanbul from the airport and 121 passengers affected.

The aggressive birds, which mostly scavenge at Mwakirunge dumpsite, have become a threat to the aviation industry as they also cause crashes.

The Mombasa county government has set out to address the menace.

In its county’s medium-term draft budget 2018/2019, Ksh30 million ($295,500) has been set aside to fight the birds in five years.

A plane belonging to German leisure airline Condor made an emergency landing at Moi International Airport, Mombasa, after hitting birds Tuesday morning.
Coast regional police boss Noah Mwivanda told the Business Daily that the aircraft landed after hitting the birds.
The plane was taking tourists to Zanzibar for holiday.

Moi International Airport manager Walter Agong said the plane was in transit from Frankfurt, Germany.

On board were 230 passengers and 10 crew members.
Police said the incident happened shortly after take-off from the airport.

A source said two crows crashed into the plane’s engines.

The plane landed safely at the airport and there were no injuries, Mr Mwivanda said.

“I am informed that there was a bird that struck the plane but all the passengers are safe. They are awaiting further instructions,” said Mr Mwivanda.

Condor head of communication Johannes Winter said on the runway a bird was ingested in the left engine of a Boeing 767 before take-off.

Complete stop
“The captain applied the brakes according to procedures and brought the aircraft to a complete stop. The passengers and crew are in good health.

"The aircraft is now inspected by certified technicians for any damage. In the meantime, all passengers will be taken care of and hotel rooms are provided for the night,” said Mr Winter.

He said a replacement aircraft flew Tuesday from Frankfurt to Mombasa is planned to take off Wednesday.

When the Business Daily visited the airport, the passengers were heading back to their hotels in Nyali.

A passenger who only identified himself as Morris said: “We just thank God we are okay. We are now heading to the hotel until tomorrow. I can’t wait to get there”.

Air France flight makes emergency landing in Mombasa over bomb scare
By CYRUS OMBATI

MOMBASA : An Air France flight from Mauritius to Paris made an emergency landing in Mombasa International Airport early Sunday morning following a bomb scare, police said.
The Boeing 777 Flight 463 was heading to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris when the pilots requested an emergency landing at the Moi International Airport at 12.37 am.
It had 459 passengers and 14 crew members on board and had left Mauritius at 9 pm.
“The pilots requested an emergency landing when a device suspected to be an explosive was discovered in the lavatory,” Police Spokesman Charles Owino said.
He added all passengers were safely evacuated and the device taken out.
A witness said a passenger went to toilet and came back informing the crew he had spotted a device. The crew later informed the captain who decided to make an emergency landing.

He said an investigation on the device had been launched to “determine if the device had explosives.”
“Experts from the (Kenya) Navy and the CID are dismantling and analysing the device,” said a witness.
Other sources said the device had been found to be real and a suspect was in custody.
“It is a real bomb and it could have exploded airborne or on arriving in Paris. More will be disclosed but we have a suspect in custody,” said an official who asked not to be named.
The plane was still at the airport on Sunday morning. Officials said the passengers had refused to board the plane and asked for another one.
The airport was evacuated as the plane landed and was later searched before the device was taken away.
Outgoing Interior Principal Secretary Monica Juma was sent to Mombasa on Sunday morning to handle the crisis and later address a press conference.
There was no immediate statement from the airline.
Top security officials are now at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa and the explosive has been removed from plane for detonation. The airport has now been reopened.
The Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery says a number of passengers in Air France flight still being questioned about suspicious device, France and Mauritius to help determine if it is a bomb.

Wacha ushamba, eti airport safety is questionable kwasababu ya birds kua karibu na airport.... unajua ni mara ngapi on a daily basis birds huingia kwa engine ya ndege airports zote ulimwenguni?

USA pekee mwaka jana ilikua na 13, 000 incidents of bird strike during landing or take off, na JFK (biggest airport in the world) ndo inaongoza kwa hizo incidents..

Huko Turkey kuna siku walikua na emergency landing tatu kwa siku moja , zote zikisababishwa na ndege kuingia ndani ya engine mpaka ikabidi airport ifungwe kwa masaa kadhaa!

Istanbul Atatürk Airport runway briefly closed after planes hit birds

The runway of Istanbul Atatürk Airport was briefly closed to traffic following three incidents involving planes hitting birds on the morning of Dec. 19.
A Turkish Airlines flight bound for İzmir on the Aegean coast was canceled after a
plane hit a large bird while taking off, with passengers transferred to another aircraft for their journey.
An Istanbul-Zagreb flight then also hit a
bird while taking off, while a plane hit another bird while landing on the same day, Doğan News Agency reported on Dec. 19.
The runway was then temporarily closed to traffic as the airport authorities tried to bring the situation under control.
