The head of the Catholic Church in Tanzania, Polycarp Cardinal Pengo has lashed out at the perpetrators of clashes claiming to pursue a religious cause.

(Guardian, April 10, 2004) Delivering a Good Friday homily held at the national level at the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) in Dar es Salaam, Cardinal Pengo also criticised corrupt leaders who amass wealth in total disregard of the majority poor.

In his message, Cardinal Pengo warned that the concept of sacrificing life or dying for one's religion was taking root among Christians. But he condemned the feat saying it defied the teachings of the Holy Bible.

He urged the rich to care for the hungry poor who are forced to spend some extra energy to get their daily bread.

The current trend whereby a few rich amass wealth is a time bomb, which would explode when the majority poor run out of patience, Pengo said.

"No hungry person can sit back and watch, while there is another one who has more than enough” , he cautioned.

On the activities of political parties, Cardinal Pengo discouraged any suggestion of an army for a party, saying this would set a bad precedent.

He noted that while the country could have as many political parties as possible, for the sake of peace and tranquility, none should form its own army.

The army should remain a business of the state, Pengo said, stressing that peace in the country could not be maintained by multiple security forces.

The prelate also bemoaned corruption, saying the evil had grown into proportions, ravaging sensitive organs like the judiciary, which are expected to protect individuals‚ rights.

As we went to press, reports reaching this paper indicated that thousands of Christians turned up for Mass all over the country in commemoration of the death of Jesus Christ more than 2000 years ago.

The police had promised tight security throughout Easter festivities.

What cardinal Pengo said is absolutely correct but I am afred, he might have used the worng platform and inconvinient time for him to express his views.It appears that cardinal Pengo is trying to merge politics and religion, a thing which is contraly to our national constitution.His move might influence other religious leaders to come up with the same arguments but in different perspectives whose consequenses infuture will strongly roune our national unity which we have been maintaing for the last forty years since our country got its independence. If he wants to be a politician,alright, let him be so, but the best option for him is to step down from religious post first.That will be an appropriate position form him to articulate his anger against the so called Mafisadi and all other existing evils in our country.

You should know that the cardinal was in the church when he was saying that. That was the right platform and to the right people and at the right time! Hurray, our cardinal we respect you!

My opinion:
There was a problem and he was addressing that problem. The message was clear and in that message there were no elements that contradicted the consitution of the United Republic of Tanzania!

His homily, in fact, strengthened national unity and security.

Jamani haya yalikuwa mahubiri ya miaka kadhaa iliyopita. Hii ndiyo kazi ya huyu mtu wa Mungu, maneno yake yalikuwa valid wakati ule, bado yako valid leo. Shida yetu ni kwmba tukiambiwa ukweli tunakuwa defensive, hatusikii, hatubadiliki. Yatakapotokea ya kutokea tutaanz kutafuta visingizio. Habari ndio hiyo. Tuzidi kumwombea kardinali azidi kupata hekima na ujasiri wa kupambana na roho chafu za kifisadi, uroho na nyinginezo has za ubishi usiokuwa na tija kwa taifa.

WHO TOLD that Pengo wants to be a politician? You have to know that the Religious leaders are not dealing with spirtual things only but also they are supposed to make sure that their ships are well fed. A preacher can not preach to a hungry person. Therefore what Pengo is doing is right and I amm appealing to all Religious leaders to follow his way. How long shall they condemn our Prophets while we stand aside and look. So it is the obligation of Religious leaders to fight for the poor dying Believers while few people are insulting their wealth for damned things.
