I have seen many Kenyans wondering what club hosting is and what these people actually do.
Well, club hosting has been part of Kenya’s entertainment scene for years, but it has recently gained attention because of Amber Ray and the Ciggie Johnson guy.
Personally, I learnt about club hosting back in 2020, when I was still a loyal ambassador of the bottle and a professional club hopper.
From Loft to Switch to 1824, I was everywhere, hunting for those Lando Lando girls gods created after lunch. Sometimes, the mission even extended beyond the club.
Those were the days before I discovered maturity and stoicism.
During one of my escapades, I made friendship with a lady who did club hosting, and she explained the business to me.
A club host, usually an attractive lady, is tasked with bringing customers to a club and encouraging them to spend money.
She invites friends, wealthy acquaintances, sponsors and anyone capable of keeping the bottles flowing. Not people who buy one madiaba and drink the whole night.
Depending on the agreement, the club may offer a complimentary bottle of Yohana Mtembezi and set sales targets.
For instance, if customers spending under her name hit KSh 30,000, she might earn a commission of KSh 5,000. The more she generates in sales, the more she can earn.
In short, she is not just going to the club to look beautiful and shake what her mama or doctor gave her. She is there to make money while making the club money.
Amber Ray, Vera Shikwekwe Sidika and the Ciggie guy operate on a broadly similar model, although celebrity status gives them an advantage.
Their popularity attracts crowds, attention and, hopefully, more spending. Their actual earnings depend on their individual arrangements with the clubs.
But what surprises me is that even men are now getting into club hosting. The gods from Nabongo Mumia caves are angry.
May the gods remember this generation! The enemy is poverty.
