To preface…. I am not a Trump supporter. Not even slightly. But as I am not an American citizen it isn't really for me to say that he shouldn't be in power, that is the choice of the citizens of the country.
- He needs to develop the work ethic he boasted about. He needs to read the reports, go to the briefings, fulfil his obligations as the incumbent of the office, detail his 'executive time' better, play golf less.
- He needs to listen. Expert opinions outrank a non expert gut. Especially he needs to listen to those that don't agree with him. Sometimes they have a point.
- He should actually do some of what he promised in the run up to the election. He wanted to be a force for political change, to drain the swamp, but he has just made it deeper.
- He needs to develop compassion, and call out hate for what it is. There is no place for sexism, racism or religious intolerance in a modern democracy. Courting the favour of racist and intolerant organisations will cost him more in the long run, and have turned the republican party into a caricature of its former self. As an outsider, he is better placed to call out that nasty.
- He needs to stop attacking the press. While the news organisations of America are not as objective as ones elsewhere in the world, most of them do actually report news. A different opinion is not necessarily a wrongful one.
- He needs to realize that there is more than one way to win. He doesn't always need to be right (covfefe for example). There are better outcomes and victories for America than a trade tariff war. America can be made great again without pissing off the rest of the world.
- He needs to tell the truth more often. All politicians lie. Everyone knows that, but he could at least try to get up to 50% of what he says to be mostly true.
- He needs to engage more maturely with the public - Twitter might be what he is comfortable with, but it is not a tool well designed for presidential address.
- He could do worse than tackle the rampant gerrymandering in the US political environment. Long gone are the days when the government actually represented the interests of the people. As a purported billionaire, he should not need to worry about losing a couple of million in campaign funding for taking a position unpopular with big business, if doing so would be better for the future of America.
