Why should Tanzania replicate the protectionism attitude on Kenya's airlines?




During the end of November of last year the prospects of affordable aviation services became a reality when Fastjet Plc a subsidiary of Lonrho (shareholder of 61%) launched her flights within Tanzania with intentions to revolutionize the flying habit that has been strictly reserved for the haves across Africa. Fastjet aiming at applying Easyjet mode of operation that changed the vice across Europe to open up her skies as a means of affordable fast travel between cities with commercial potentials that badly need that to spur trade between cities.

However, uncharacteristically of the economic block spirit, our neighbors from the North worked behind the doors to see that is not happening be through law chambers or unfair competition. Via the use of their corrupt organs like Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) and Ministry of transport (MOT); the Kenya Airways (KQ) management in association with those authorities worked behind the clock tirelessly to frustrate issuing of flying permits to Fastjet to an extent of querying the wisdom behind hatred for fair competition, a song Kenyans are championing themselves to be leading.

If i have to ask a layman about the ongoing court saga between Fly 540 Kenya a parent company of Fastjet that also flies limitless across East African spaces, It is pretty obvious the frustrations have to do with acute protectionism attitude embroiled by most Kenyans that have made it a habit they condone at home while hypocritically condemning with all passion if their business come across the vice abroad. Within East African space, KQ that has a virtue monopoly on the East African space, has a plan to launch a budget version of their own by the name Jambojet and in the anticipation of the competition they are about to face, they secured licences without protectionist's hassles to most of East African Airports (22 in total)
well ahead.

In opposite to the general acceptable business practices and accumenship in any society that embrace free market principles, Fastjet with market recapitalization of about US$ 70 mio.
could not launch her operations within Kenya at the time Fastjet launched her operations in Tanzania. This was irrespective of the fact that the budget airline had followed all due procedures including agreeing with partners to operate using fly 540 licenses across Africa something clearly revealed sign of fouls being played by Fastjet's nemesis. Since, the issuance of licences to Jambojet is something all airline pundits believe have offered KQ a chance to compete on equal foot, hostility free environment with Fastjet if at all they are willing. This is in addition to the 41% stake KQ holds in Precision Air (PW) indisputable defacto National Airline in Tanzania that positions them more chances to desist any attempts to be pushed out the lucrative air business across the region.

Then why has issuance of licenses to Fastjet to fly in Kenya has been an issue? What are the East African guidelines on accessing license say to a company incorporated in a member state? Is Tanzania not being too generous to Kenyan airlines on continuing to issue license to them? Should Tanzania not consider the current crisis being a man made and not a technicality or procedural, a clear sign of hegemony aimed at frustrating business that originate from outside her soil and want to vie for business opportunities within the region? Isn't that an act of sabotage by a nation that always is naive to condemn her neighbors of xenophobia when their businesses stall in a neighbor country? Most answers for these questions can be answered by Titus Naikuni the CEO of of KQ. With the cutting throats but reasonable prices offered by Fastjet the responsible individuals within Kenya saw the danger of the new budget airline that had plans to fly across Africa the market KQ depends for for over half of her sales. But should that be a relief to most of us that can't afford flying? Furthermore, shouldn't the responsible authorities ask themselves whether prices charged by KQ and her partner PW not extortive? If Fastjet can offer US$ 20, why can KQ offer the same with her Jambojet to give more room for flying affordability?

Due to the demand of the mode of operation Fastjet has chosen, her business has to focus mainly on routes that connect cities with masses and with airports that can accommodate A319 aircraft as were compatible to their operation cost considering the fact they are charging US$ 20 per person and had assured themselves an aircraft of 150 seats could sustain her operation. Due to the presence of larger international community within Nairobi and a lucrative tourism circuit around Mombasa, flying to and fro between Nairobi and other cities across the region will offer a needed momentum to reach and sustain the operations margins needed to make cheap flights a reality.

For the sake of sanity among Kenyan Authorities and removal of Non Tariffs trade Barriers (NTTBs), I am of the opinion for Tanzanian authorities to change the way they conduct their business especially with Kenya cause doesn't embrace the spirit of common market especially with businesses originating outside their background. And for that case, i am advising the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority together with Fair Competition Commission and Ministries of Transport, of Trade and of East Africa cooperation to safeguard and make sure the interests of Tanzania incorporated companies that vie for opportunities across the region run smoothly and reconsider the way they handle Kenyan companies since they have no respect of the generosity they are offered and their ultimate motives are to show the World that no business can survive within Tanzania an onslaught we ought to deal with squarely especially at this good moments when a country re-position herself to exploit her abundant gas natural resources.



The protectionism attitude by our neighbors should not be left hanging without a reaction since Fastjet's intention is to make flying affordable a situation that would have boost inter-connection within cities and boost trade, a thing the EAC tries to promote ever her establishment for the better welfare of East African citizens. At the moment, it is absolutely digressing from ethical practices to learn that for a flight of less than 2 hours between Dar and Nairobi one has to part with a sum of around US$ 300 while Fastjet is ready to serve the route for only US$ 20 (US$ 70 tax inclusive) if booking is done well in advance. Can you tell us why to get a licence to operate in Kenya takes this long for Fastjet but not for Jambojet? since June?

Tufanye kaz. Kama tanzania inangilika, tutaingiliwa na kenya cku zote. Tujipange na tuzione fursa zetu na siyo kulalamikia fursa walizoona wenzetu. Huwezi kumshawishi mtu ategemee shirika ambalo halina hata computer na printer za boarding pass katika karne hii. Hata kama nina mapenzi na nchi yangu siwezi kufurahia upuuzi kama huu wa ATCL. Hata ukitembelea ofisi zao ni chafu na haziendi na wakati.

Mkuu umemaliza na mimi naongeza hivi:

1.Magugu maji yalipandikizwa Ziwa Victoria kwa nia nzuri kabisa kupunguza ubabe wa Sangara kwa Sato.Lakini kadiri miaka ilivyopita,ndivyo tulivyoona madhara ya hayo Magugu.

2.KQ ndio icon kuu ya Kenya kwa sasa na mimi nasema big up sana kwa Serikali ya Kenya kuilinda kampuni yao.KQ haijashindwa kuwahudumia wakenya na kwa kweli wanawahudumia vilivyo.Ukiruhusu magugu maji kumdhibiti Sangara,unaweza kuua kabisa industry ya aviation ndani ya nchi na nje ya nchi.

3.Mtoa mada atueleze uhalisia wa Fastjet kupata kibali Tanzania (Rushwa tupu,ukiukwaji mkubwa wataratibu na kutokuthamini vya nyumbani).Na infact, Serikali ilipaswa kuzingatia hili na hasa lengo lake la kutaka kuifufua ATCL,kwani kwenye hii vita ya Precision, Fastjet na ATCL, anayeumia ni ATCL na tayari anajiondoa kwenye Safari za Mwanza.

4.Precision Air ni ya watanzania na itabaki kuwa hivyo.Labda kitu ambacho wengi hawafahamu sababu ya Precision kuuza sehemu yake kwa KQ, ni kuwa; Baada ya kuona ATC inatafuta ubia na hatimaye kuangukia kwa SA, Mzee Shirima akaona hataweza kupambana nao pekee na hivyo kutafuta kampani ya kampuni nyingine.Sifa haikuwa ni lazima iwe KQ, ila kampuni ambayo iko tayari kuungana na PW na yenye uzoefu na maarifa ya biashara ya usafiri wa anga.Ngoma ikawa droo, TC na SA, PW na KQ.Sasa kilicholeta tofauti ni commitment,determination na goals kuanzia kwenye kusaini mikataba.

5.Laiti ungejua Fastjet anavyopata hasara kwa kuruka kwa bei hizo,ungejuiliza mara mbili kusudio lake hasa ni lipi kufanya biashara na nini mustakabali wake kwa tasinia ya usafiri wa anga.

incorporation does not mean ownership! all i asked is the Govt to protect Fastjet since thy have invested and hence incorporated in Tanzania and offered jobs and offers the most affordable services that the merits of which supersede all what other airlines offer including KQ, PW and the rest in operating locally and across the region! Very few people can afford PW and KQ; and i will not sit here seeing PW and her partner use unorthodox means colluding with Governments across the region to put that airline out of business and appreciate that since the logic of fair trade will be defeated!

Haya kampuni mbili za reli ambazo hazina mpinzani TRC na TAZARA ziko mahututi, nani alaumiwe huko, ni precision nako??? PW imeajiri watanzania wengi na ina karakana ya kisasa ya kukarabati ndege, ni kampuni ya wazalendo na iko incorporated hapa hapa na iko kwenye soko letu as public company, but no one is complementing them just because ni WAFANYABIASHARA. Zile idea tulizofundishwa wakati wa ujamaa na kujitegemea kuwa wafanyabiashara ni WEZI na kila mtu awe aspired kuwa MKULIMA NA MFANYAKAZI zimepitwa na wakati.

Wakati Paul Chizi anaelekea kuikomboa ATCL na kuifanya iwe katika nafasi nzuri zaidi kwa miaka 10 iliyopita, Mwakyembe alimuondoa kwa ZENGWE na watu wakamuita MWIZI bila hata kuangalia track record yake na kazi aliyoifanya. Shirika lilikuwa na safari hadi 40 kwa wiki za Mwanza na Kigoma. Mwakyembe akamuondoa kwa ushauri wa wezi wa wizarani ambao zama zao za kulazimisha mikataba ya kifisadi na kuchukua hela za bure ziliisha, na kumuweka mtu ambaye hana track record yoyote kwenye corporate management na ndio huyo shirika linamfia mikononi. Mimi sio aina ya watu wanaosifia shirika ambalo linashindwa hata kuchapisha boarding pass wanaandika kwa kalamu ya wino, hapo mtaniona sio ''MZALENDO''

PW is incorporated in Tanzania listed at Daresalaam Stock Exchange as a Tanzanians Public Company,,, Fastjet is a subsidiary of Lonrho plc and listed at FTSE. No evidence of colluding with government or whatsoever by PW, but there are enough evidence to suggest that ATCL is sabotaged by the govt officials to fall in bogus plane hiring contracts which make the airline incompetent and I am telling you this airline will soon die unless your govt inject substantial amount of capital from our taxes.
PW flight are affordable thats why most of their flights are almost full and it offers more jobs and have invested more than Fastjet. All the captains in Fastjet planes are WAZUNGU but PW have good number of Tanzanian pilots. I once have been in a PW flight with all Tanzanian LADIES pilots from Dar to Mwanza

Mkuu umemaliza kila kitu, nakubaliana nawe mind set zetu zina walakini sana - kama unavyo eleza hapa sasa inakuwaje P.A inafanya vizuri wakati wafanya kazi ni Watanzania hawa hawa - wao wanatumia mbinu gani kufanya kazi kwa ufanisi, wakati mashirika karibu yote ya uchukuzi nchini yanatutia aibu?

Mimi nafikili Serikali ingejiondoa katika tasnia hizi za uchukuzi kuanzia kwenye anga, majini na reli - Serikali iwe na shares tu lakini mambo ya ku-run sector hizo waiachie watu binafsi/wafanyabiashara ambao wataziendesha kibiashara bila ya kuingiza mambo mambo ya siasa, kusema kweli mifano ya kuigwa tunayo i.e Azam Marines, jamaa huyu akipata wabia kutoka nje ana uwezo mkubwa wa kufanya biashara za anga kwa mafanikio makubwa, business acumen yake is unquestionable - kichwa sana yule. Tuko pamoja mkuu - asante sana kwa angalizo lako zuri. Lakini bado nakumbusha kwamba KQ na Serikali yao wamepania sana kuiua FastJet na Carriers zingine Africa Mashariki, wasipo kuwa confronted na ukweli huo na kuelezwa ukweli uhusiano wao na sisi utakuwa ni wa mashaka siku zote.

fastjet Plc (listed at LSE) means a lot to common Mwananchi and has a subsidiary here in Tanzania that operates using fly 540 license! whether PW is listed at DSE or not, it does not help me since they have exorbitant prices that make a kill out of poor Tanzanians! whereas Fastjet is not listed at DSE but they charge u ONLY 32,000 for a ticket! Has never happened in a history of aviation industry within Tanzania.

Major turbulence hit Fastjet, the African budget airline backed by easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, today as a legal dispute saw the owner of its Kenyan business threaten to take away its licence.

Fastjet's Africa operations have been licensing the Fly540 brand from Five Forty Aviation - majority-owned by chief executive Don Smith - since 2008. But Five Forty claims Fastjet has not filed safety reports for the past three months and that one plane, "which flew with defects from Tanzania and landed in Nairobi on December 14, should not have flown." It also alleges Fastjet owes it $7.7 million (£4.9 million) in licensing fees and has ordered Fastjet's operations in Angola, Ghana and Tanzania to "re-paint aircraft in a neutral colour, re-brand all of the sales offices, remove the Fly540 brand; return all materials containing the Fly540 logo; and rename the companies other than 540."
Smith said: "We had no choice but to take this action."
Fastjet responded: "No Fastjet A319 flew from Tanzania to Nairobi on December 14, 2012. A maintenance (non-public transport) flight was undertaken by a Fly540 CRJ.
"Fastjet takes safety very seriously and will investigate any claims relating to defects. Fly540 is powerless to withdraw air operating licences [which are] between Governments and individual entities."
Fastjet said it will sue Smith for "unsubstantiated claims".

A reason why Kenyan companies should be boycotted.....Don Smith works for KQ and his interests to keep fly 540 flying this is after all agreements have legally been enacted! If Fastjet is going out of business i advice GOT to withdraw licenses of KQ and fly 540!
