Deputy President William Ruto International Criminal Court trial set
By Felix Olick
The stage is now set for the trial of Deputy President William Ruto with a major press conference on the commencement of the trials scheduled at The Hague.
The joint press conference of the defence, the prosecution, the registry and lawyers representing victims is scheduled for September 9, just a day before the trials kick off.
Ruto is charged alongside Radio Journalist Joshua Arap Sang for orchestrating the violence that brought Kenya to its knees in late 2007 and early 2008 that left more than 1,100 people dead and forced a further 650,000 from their homes.
According to a statement from the International Criminal Court (ICC), Ruto's Lead Counsel Karim Khan and ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda are among those who shall address the media.
The ICC Registrar, Herman von Hebel, will open the Press Conference. The ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, the Defence Counsel for William Samoei Ruto, Karim Khan, the Defence Counsel for Joshua Arap Sang, Joseph Kipchumba Kigen-Katwa, and the Legal Representative of the Victims, Wilfred Nderitu, will then make short statements, the ICC statement read in part.
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions for journalists attending the event in The Hague.
Preparations are also in top gear for the trials of President Uhuru Kenyatta with a status conference set for next week on Friday to set the ground rules.
Uhuru's trial opens on November 12.
Top on the agenda of the meeting is the duration of the prosecution case, the procedure for applying for site visits and the sitting schedule.
Also to be discussed is the request by Uhuru to be present through his trial via video link.
However, the three judge bench headed by Japanese Judge Kuniko Ozaki said that Uhuru is not required to attend the status conference.
The accused, Mr Kenyatta, is not required to attend the hearing in person but has to be represented by his Counsels, said a statement from the court.
