Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for more than a dozen new Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier aircraft, cementing its position as the regional aviation giant.

The airline announced on Tuesday at the Paris Air Show that it had placed a $3 billion order for 10 Airbus A350-900 aeroplanes, in addition to at least another two it already has on order.

It is looking at more wide-bodied aircraft to help it boost its hub-based business model, which primarily relies on moving regional and continental travellers through its Addis Ababa hub.

Airlines group chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam said that it would be deploying the new aircraft on its long range routes to meet increased customer demand.

“We have been a loyal Boeing customer for a very long time, because we were looking for the right aircraft in the Airbus family. Now we have found the A350 to be the right aircraft for us. We are very happy we made that decision very early in the A350 programme. Now we see the performance of the aircraft is up to expectations. The performance, operational and cost efficiencies we have achieved with our initial A350-900s have resulted in these additional 10 aircraft orders,” Mr Tewolde said.

Original order

Last June, Ethiopian Airlines took delivery of the first of its original order for 12 A350s and now operates four of the type with three leased from AerCap and one leased from PingAn Aircraft Leasing.

The airline also signed a $1.5 billion engine order with Rolls-Royce that will see the latter provide Trent XWB engines for the 10 new Airbus A350-900 aircraft. In addition, the order includes engine service parts for 14 of the aircraft already in service.

Ethiopian Airlines ordered Trent 1000 engines for six Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft at the 2016 Paris Airshow, five of which are in service, and has lease arrangements for an additional four aircraft.

On Wednesday, the airline also announced that it had signed a commitment with Boeing for the purchase of two B777 freighters at a cost of $651.4 million. It also confirmed that it had firmed up the 10 Boeing 737 options included in its original order placed back in 2014, pushing its order to 30. Ethiopian Airlines currently operates six of this type alongside two B757-200s.

Trading partner

“We still remain with Europe as Africa’s largest trading partner and that has an impact on what we do. Having a very good aeroplane from Europe, is a perfect match. We will deploy these additional aircraft on our long-haul routes connecting Addis Ababa with destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia,” Mr Tewolde said, complimenting the overall performance of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Ethiopian Airlines will also be receiving five additional Dash 8-400s, a $163 million order that Canadian plane maker Bombardier confirmed, having received two of them last year.

Related stories

The airline currently has 14 of these aircraft, which it uses for interconnectivity routes within Africa that eventually feed into its long range flights.

Countries these aircraft are deployed into include Malawi, Togo and Tanzania. The airline fleet boasts of A350s, Boeing 787s, 777-300ERs, 777-200LRs, 777-200 freighters and Bombardier Q400s jets.

Tanzania explores LNG prospects with NGC

Published:

Saturday, July 1, 2017

Tanzania wants to develop its liquified natural gas (LNG) sector and a delegation from that country recently visited the National Gas Company (NGC) Limited for talks. The group expressed interest in promoting NGC, T&T’s service sector and academic institutions, if value could be created in Tanzania’s critical stages of development.

“Th Government Negotiating Team of Tanzania’s (GNT) visit centred around learning more about T&T’s oil and gas industry and was aimed at helping team acquire knowledge and experience which will help to modify and develop a better term sheet,” the company said in a statement

NGC president Mark Loquan and vice president Gas Transmission and Distribution, Ronald Adams presented to the GNT on NGC and NGC Group’s interest in LNG.

“Loquan noted that these study tours are important to NGC as they cemented NGC’s new strategy—transforming its business, growing along the value chain, moving into other jurisdictions and becoming a global player through strategic partnerships.”

In its effort to expand its LNG sector, the Government of Tanzania opened discussions with international oil companies (IOC) for negotiation of a host government agreement (HGA) on developing an LNG project.

“Discussions began in September 2016 and the Government of Tanzania constituted the GNT to meet with negotiating teams for the IOCs. To date, the IOCs and GNT have agreed to develop a term sheet separately in order to start negotiations which will develop the HGA.”

According to the statement the feedback from the Tanzania officials was enormous because “the GNT expressed great interest in the gas model used in T&T, issues with respect to development of the gas model, infrastructural development for gas distribution and other elements such as LNG production, royalties and fiscal terms which in T&T are set by the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries.”

The potential of Tanzania’s 53.2 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas resources has brought “intense competition” among global energy players. Tanzania’s economy has borne the brunt of slow-moving global economic growth and low commodity prices and its government is pushing for the development of the country’s unexploited offshore gas reserves.

World Bank approves $345 million loan for Tanzania port expansion

The World Bank said on Sunday it had approved a $345 million loan for the expansion of a port in Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam, which the East African country aims to turn into a regional gateway.

Dar es Salaam is vying with the port of Mombasa in Kenya to become the trade hub for landlocked neighbors such as Zambia, Rwanda, Malawi, Burundi, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but both ports are hobbled by congestion and inefficiency.

The port handled 13.8 million tonnes in 2016 - an increase from 10.4 million in 2011, reflecting an average growth of 9 percent per year, according to the bank. Tanzania wants to lift its capacity to 28 million tonnes a year by 2020.

"The project represents the start of an incremental process towards increasing the capacity of the port of Dar es Salaam and strengthening its economic role in the region," Richard Martin Humphreys, the World Bank's lead transport economist, said in a statement.

In a 2014 report, the bank said inefficiencies at the port was costing Tanzania and its neighbors up to $2.6 billion a year.

The statement said ongoing infrastructure investments at the port were expected to improve overall productivity and reduce waiting time to berth from 80 hours to 30 hours.

"Enhancing its operational potential will boost trade ... and reduce the current cost of $200-$400 for each additional day of delay for a single consignment," said Bella Bird, the World Bank's Country Director for Tanzania.

The loan is the second batch to be approved by the bank for the expansion of the port this year. Tanzania received $305 million in January.

Last month, the country also signed a $154 million contract with the state-run China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to build a roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) terminal to deepen and strengthen seven berths at the port.

Dar Port expansion heralds trade boom
ALVAR MWAKYUSA
06 July 2017

LOCAL shipping agents, freight forwarders and transporters are foreseeing booming business opportunities and enhanced efficiency once the expansion work at the Dar es Salaam port is completed and the envisioned electronic single window system becomes operational.

Installed capacity at the country’s major gateway is presently at 18 million tonnes, but with the planned deepening and strengthening of berths at the port through the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DMGP), the capacity will surge to 28 million tonnes.

Speaking in separate interviews with the ‘Daily News,’ industry players were upbeat that the coming of larger ocean vessels will reduce unit cost due to economies of scale and the same time reduce the dwell time that ships have been using at the harbour.

“It is as well obvious that the government will register more revenue with the booming business at the port,” the Chairman of Tanzania Shipping Agents Association (TASAA), Mr Anil Patel, told this paper yesterday.

Mr Patel was equally impressed that the envisaged electronic single window system, to become operational in 16-months’ time, will do away with red tape since importers and exporters will be allowed to lodge documents electronically.

“There will be no need to shuttle from one government institution to another since everything will be done online. All responsible institutions will be connected to the system,” Mr Patel remarked.

The views were supported by the Secretary General of Tanzania Freight Forwarders Association (TAFFA), Mr Tony Swai, who described the Dar es Salaam port as a ‘gold mine.’

“The port is strategically positioned; with the planned upgrading we will be able to directly receive larger ships from Dubai, China, India and elsewhere. “The shallow and narrow entrance at the turning basin have been a challenge, but this is set to change with the deepening and widening at the harbour,” he explained.

Reached for comments, the Chairperson of Tanzania Truck Owners Association (TATOA), Ms Angelina Ngalula, hailed President John Magufuli for the efforts to upgrade the port.

The trio went on and informed the ‘Daily News’ that they were preparing themselves for the expected increased shipments at the harbour. The dwell time for local consignment is now at between six and seven days while transit shipment take between 12-14 days, but Mr Patel was confident that the time will be significantly reduced after completion of the upgrading.

Last Sunday, Dr Magufuli laid a foundation stone for deepening and strengthening of berths one to seven at the Dar es Salaam port, whose construction is expected to be completed in the next 30 months.

The 926.2bn/- project is being funded by the World Bank, United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DfID) and the government of Tanzania.

Upon completion of the upgrading project, the harbour will be in a position to handle larger ships, post Panamax, which can carry between 6,000 and 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from the maximum capacity of 4,000 TEUs by smaller ships currently docking at the port.

President Magufuli pointed to the fact that the project will benefit not only Tanzania but also its land-locked neighbours of Rwanda, Zambia, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He noted further that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will depend highly on effectiveness at the port. The Director General of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Eng. Deusdedit Kakoko, said the venture will be undertaken in two phases, the first one being expansion of the berths, construction of terminals and a specialised berth for imported vehicles (Ro-Ro terminal).

Last year, the harbour handled 14 million tonnes, up from 13.8 million tonnes in 2016 and 13.1 million tonnes in 2013, reflecting an average growth of 9 per cent per year over the last five years.
