Magufuli hints on road to link Morogoro, Ruvuma
HOME NEWS

PRESIDENT John Magufuli revealed yesterday that feasibility study and detailed designing were being undertaken for construction of a key road stretching over 500 kilometres to link Morogoro and Ruvuma regions.

Construction of the road is crucial for unlocking opportunities along the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) and Kilombero valley through agriculture, fishing, trade and tourism in addition to setting up of industries.

Dr Magufuli made the revelation in Morogoro yesterday during an occasion to lay a foundation stone for construction of a 66.9 kilometres of tarmac road from Kidatu to Ifakara in the region to be constructed at a total cost of 104.9bn/-.

President Magufuli explained yesterday that the feasibility study and detailed designing was being funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), calling upon other development partners to support the country to construct the key road.

Implementation of the Kidatu-Ifakara stretch is part of plans by the government to extend the road to Lupiro-Malinyi –Londo and eventually Lumecha area at Songea in Ruvuma. Kidatu is already linked with a tarmac road to Mikumi along the Dar es Salaam-Morogoro- Iringa-Mbeya-Zambia Highway.

Execution of the envisaged road project from Kidatu to Songea is expected to reduce the distance of travelling from Morogoro to Ruvuma by 131km. From Lupiro, the road will branch off to Mahenge in Ulanga and eventually Selous Game Reserve.

President Magufuli pointed to the fact that the road project would be made possible now that the 384- m bridge linking Ifakara and Malinyi over Kilombero River had been completed and set for official launching today.

Speaking earlier, the Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa, explained that execution of the Kidatu-Ifakara Road Would involve construction of a 130-metre long bridge over Ruaha Mkuu River along the stretch.

Prof Mbarawa explained that the project is being jointly funded by the government of Tanzania, the European Union (EU) as well as the United States and United Kingdom through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Department for International Development (DfID).

Mikumi MP Mr Joseph Haule (Chadema), had earlier placed a request to the government to construct a tarmac road to link Morogoro and Tanga regions to ease movements of people and goods along the corridor.

The road proposed by the MP would stretch from Korogwe-Handeni- Mvomero and eventually Mikumi where it will link with the Mikumi-Lupiro- Songea road.

Odebrecht construction unit aims for $3.6 bln in new contracts
Reuters Staff

SAO PAULO, May 7 (Reuters) - The construction unit of Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht SA is trying to win $3.6 billion in new contracts, a senior executive of the corruption-ensnared group said.

Last week, Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção (OEC) announced two new contracts totaling $704 million to build a private port in the southeastern state of Espirito Santo and public transportation systems in the northern state of Pará.

Odebrecht’s director for infrastructure, José Quintella, said the company will try to win contracts around $3.6 billion, including one to build a hydroelectric dam in Tanzania.

OEC failed to pay $144 million in bonds due last month. Its parent is still in talks with banks to obtain new funds and repay the bond within the 30-day grace period. (Reporting by Aluisio Alves; Writing by Tatiana Bautzer

Stiegler’s Gorge preps ticking

THE Government announced yesterday that it was conducting due diligence in respect of several firms that applied to undertake the construction of a 2,100 megawatts Rufiji Hydropower project at Stiegler's Gorge along the Rufiji River in July, this year.

Minister for Energy, Dr Medard Kalemani, told some members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals that the investigation would enable the State decide on which firm should execute the milliondollar first largest hydroelectric project.

It is on record that five companies had been shortlisted from a pool of 17 that applied for the lucrative deal whose tendering process was opened in December, last year. Dr Kalemani said: “It’s not too late for the government to implement the project.

It could have taken us five years but I can confirm to you that we are on the right track.” Tanzania aims to boost its power generation capacity to feed the demand for domestic and now industrial use. Continues onCurrently, the existing hydropower projects have a combined capacity to generate 560 megawatts.

The Rufiji project will add over 2,100 megawatts, which is nine times the capacity of the current large hydroelectric project, Kidatu, that produces 204 MW. Dr Kalemani told MPs that all government institutions charged with the sustainability of the project were striving on crafting the right scenario, especially infrastructures at the site.

“We have already connected three villages with electricity and the plan is to build electricity infrastructure to the site to allow the selected contractor to start work immediately,” he said. According to the minister, the ministry responsible for Works, Transport and Communication was also getting set to construct a road network to facilitate transportation of facilities needed during the execution.

Giving details, Engineer John Mageni from the Ministry of Energy, said construction of the hydro facility would involve building a main dam and appurtenant structures, with expected reservoir length of 100 km, covering an area of about 1,350 square km.

The dam height is about 134 metres. Rufiji will have an installed capacity of at least 2,100 MW, with a minimum guaranteed annual firm energy of 5,920 GWh. The facility will include a 400-KV switch yard. The ministry anticipates that the facility will contain nine vertical Francis turbines, each with a capacity of 200 MW to 300 MW.

The government says it had so far connected 412 new villages under the first round of Rural Energy Agency Phase III which targets to connect at least 7,873 villages countrywide. About 5100 villages will be reached during the first round or REA III and 2773 others will be connected during the second round that is expected to start next July.

Tanzania starts connecting key industries to natural gas
Source: Xinhua 2018-05-17 01:15:49

DAR ES SALAAM, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The government of Tanzania is implementing a project to connect key industries in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam with natural gas as source of energy, reducing dependence on erratic electricity.

Subira Mgalu, Deputy Minister for Energy, told the National Assembly on Wednesday in the capital Dodoma that the project was being implemented by the government's petroleum watchdog--the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC).

"The plan is to reduce dependence of electricity as the only source of power for production by the industries," said Mgalu, adding that some of the industries that have started the process to use natural gas were Bahkresa Industries, producers of juices, and Coca-Cola Kwanza.

The official made the remarks as Tanzanian President John Magufuli has promised to turn the country into a middle income industrial economy by 2025.

Tanzania is on the process of implementing a mega hydropower at Stiegler's Gorge along the Rufiji River in the Selous Game Reserve that will produce 2,100 megawatts.

Medard Kalemani, the Minister for Energy, said last month currently the government was building relevant infrastructure that will simplify the implementation of the project.

Kalemani said the Stiegler's Gorge power generation project was expected to completely end the country's power woes and sustain local industries with electricity and sell the surplus outside the country.

Tanzania, with a population of approximately 54 million has just 1,500MW of installed grid capacity.

However, the Stiegler's Gorge project has been a significant concern for many years now due to its potential negative impact on the Selous Game Reserve, a world heritage site renowned for its animal populations and variety of wildlife habitats.
