Young Africans survived a scare before squeezing a 2-1 win over Azam FC in an action-packed Premier League match at the Uhuru Stadium yesterday.
Striker Jerryson Tegete struck twice to give the Jangwani street team the three points they needed to remain serious contenders for the title and the jackpot that goes with it.
Yesterdays result means the battle for the title is now a two-horse race between Yanga and their arch-rivals Simba, whose rivalry is as old as the countrys football history. For Azam, who at one time seemed destined to emerge the Mainland soccer kings, the defeat killed off whatever little hopes they had to snatch the title.
Second-placed Yanga now have 43 points from 20 games, two points adrift of league leaders Simba and six ahead of third-placed Azam.Yanga, needing a win so as to remain in the touching distance of pace setters Simba, made a bright start in the end-to-end match.
They missed what could have been the match-opener two minutes into the game when Jerryson Tegete broke through, but his shot narrowly missed target.
Azam reacted swiftly and broke the stalemate only seconds later when a pass by Seleman Kassim was met by striker John Boko, whose close-range strike gave goalie Ivan Knezevic no chance.
Tegete fluffed another chance for Yanga in the 12th minute when he latched into a Davies Mwape pass on the edge of the box, only to see his shot go wide with goalkeeper Vladmir Niyonkuru well beaten.
Yanga survived a scare in the 20th minute when Boko, with only goalie Knezevic to beat, shot agonisingly wide as Azam pressed for the second the goal.In the 38th minute, Azams goalkeeper Niyonkuru was forced to dive full length to parry off a Tegete header for an abortive corner.
Tegete redeemed himself four minutes to half time when he capitalised on a defensive mix-up to easily curl in an equaliser for Sam Timbes team.
