From the aerial views of Nairobi, you can see the planning. You can see the estate roads. You can see the organization.
Dar is total chaos, ugly structures, rusty sheets.
You can argue here all day, but you know that is what it is.

Zoom out that map of Nairobi on desktop and you see the tiny section that Kibera and the others occupy.

I have hosted several Tanzanians here in Nairobi. And the one thing that shocks each one of them everytime is the housing.
They are all amazed to see the highrise structures in residential estates. Almost everyone lives in highrise, well organized apartments.
They were surprised to find tarmac in residential estates. Something that is virtually non-existent in Tanzania.

Meanwhile in Dar and most of Tanzania, the houses for 99% of residents look like this.
Even Wasafi captured them well in Tetema.

Never been to Dar but from the pictures, the housing seems Mombasa esque!!! Small small unplanned single unit settlements. Kila mtu anajenga vile anajiskia..... may not qualify to be called slums us we know them in NBO, but definatley unplanned and disorganised, i think that is what the title of the thread 'Makazi holela' means.

Majority of those so called slums occupy less than an acre of land.

Do you know the dimensions of any acre??? It's just like a size of a standardised football pitch (100m x 50m = 500sqm). But an acre is a bit less than a football pich, because it has 4047sqm.
Now figure out if the size of your Nairobi slums have this size.

That is a typical slum. It is characterised by:
1. Poor building materials.
2. Cross Section values of properties is uniform through out the area.

That is a slum in Nairobi yes, but go check on Google earth how big of a land area it occupies in Nairobi.

Dar has Unplanned Settlements.

Whatever you call them. They are shanties. Soweto in South Africa looks better than Dar and is still considered a slum.

But the problem is 99% of Dar looks like that. Unplanned shanties. If you were to knock it down to put up better structures, you would literally be left with no city. Only the CBD would remain.

Here in Nairobi if we were to knock down the slums today, 98% of the city would be left standing.
