Yapi Merkezi chooses Frauscher for track vacancy detection

Start slideshow

The Tanzania Railway Corporation has commissioned the Turkish company Yapi Merkezi to implement a new railway line in the African country. The first of a total of five sections will cover some 205 kilometres. From Dar Es Salaam on the coast to Morogoro.

Yapi chose the Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC and the Wheel Sensor RSR180 for the planning of the track vacancy detection system. The contract was signed in early October 2018 by Michael Thiel, CEO Frauscher Sensor Technology, and Orze Arioglu, CEO Yapi Merkezi Global Construction Group. In total, around 450 counting heads will be installed on the first two construction phases alone.

The modularity and flexible interfaces of the FAdC allow Yapi the greatest possible independence in infrastructure design. The axle counter can be easily and quickly integrated into various interlockings. The RSR180 has already proven its reliability in various markets around the globe.

SENEGAL’S REGIONAL EXPRESS TRAIN NEARS COMPLETION AS PRESIDENT SALL INAUGURATES DAKAR TO DIAMNIADIO LINE

Senegal’s President Macky Sall, yesterday inaugurated the first section of the Regional Express Train (Train Express Régional, or TER) that will link Senegal’s capital city Dakar to Diamniadio in line with plans when work started in December 2016. The TER is a flagship element of the Plan for an Emerging Senegal policy framework. The Emerging Senegal Plan launched in 2014 is aimed at promoting the economic and social development of the West African country.

“Very pleased to inaugurate the TER, an important project of our infrastructure policy. Combined with other projects, it is a revolution in our long distance mobility, for the well-being of Senegalese and Senegalese,” President Sall wrote on Twitter following the inauguration on Monday.

APIX, the Senegalese State investment and public works agency, had in 2016 selected ENGIE and Thales to design and build systems and infrastructures for the new Dakar Regional Express Train in a contract valued at €225 million ($257.8 million) and expected to be completed in 26 months. Working with APIX and other partners, the companies are tasked with the design and construction of rail electrification, revenue collection, signalling, and telecommunication systems.

When the second section of the project is completed in 2020, the Regional Express Train will link Dakar to the new Blaise Diagne International Airport in 45 minutes, through 14 stations and 55 km of track.

Senegal had last year received shipment of 15 Coradia Polyvalent trains from French multinational rail transport company Alstom. The 15 trains will help satisfy the increasing need for mobility in Dakar and will run on the new line connecting the centre of the city to the new Blaise Diagne International Airport. The number of daily passengers is expected to be up to 115,000.

Ila still itakuwa way better in comparison to "ze mtambo wa chang'aa" in urban SGR that costed twice ours! 😀

No wonder Tz SGR inaongelewa kama the best in Africa.

Tunaenza elimishana kama una taharifa zaidi.

SENEGAL: President Macky Sall was among the invited guests who joined the first test run of an Alstom Coradia Polyvalent multiple-unit in Senegal on January 14.

The train’s first run marks a further step in preparations for the opening of the 55 km Train Express Régional rail link between the capital Dakar and a new international airport at Diass. The 1 435 mm gauge line is expected to open in two stages, with the first passenger trains planned to run later this year. An initial 36 km will link a station in central Dakar with the new town of Diamniadio.

A second phase of 19 km would extend the route to the Blaise Diagne airport. The completed line would have 14 intermediate stations and the fastest end-to-end journeys will take 45 min. The railway is expected to carry 115 000 passengers/day.

Alstom is supplying 15 electro-diesel Coradia Polyvalent trainsets for the route, of which three have now arrived in Dakar. These were ordered in 2016 under a contract placed by government-owned investment agency APIX. The four-car trains can carry up to 400 passengers in first and second class saloons and have a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

The trains are being produced at Alstom’s Reichshoffen plant in France; components come from factories at Le Creusot (bogies), Ornans (traction equipment) and Villeurbanne (information systems). The design is adapted for local conditions, including provision of a high-performance air conditioning unit. The use of electro-diesel trainsets would allow ‘continuous operation of the train and more reliability for a better passenger experience’, an Alstom spokesperson told Railway Gazette.

Contracts for the civil works were let in 2016. A consortium of France’s Eiffage, local company CSE and Yapı Merkezi of Turkey was awarded a construction package worth CFAFr330bn. Energy services company Engie and subcontractor Thales supported by CSE were selected as preferred bidders for a €225m design and build contract covering the power supplies, 25 kV electrification, signalling, train control and telecoms.

A consortium of TSO, NGE Contracting, CIM and CDE has been tasked with rebuilding and realigning the legacy metre-gauge railway into Dakar as part of the TER programme.

‘Thanks to the confidence of our customer APIX and the contribution of all Alstom employees, we are proud to place Dakar among the first cities in Africa to acquire such transport technology and thus provide passengers in this country with a safe, reliable and environmentally friendly mobility solution’, commented Raphaël Bernardelli, Managing Director for Alstom in Africa.
