Ahly launch defence against free-scoring Young Africans

Holders, Al-Ahly of Egypt begin the defence of the CAF Champions League trophy against Tanzanian champions, Young African this weekend with a 1/16th stage first leg clash.

Upon the completion of the maiden edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), attention will be focused on the continental club champions and the Ahly-Young Africans ranks amongst the dicey duels.

The Cairo-based club drew a bye at the prelims and Saturday’s clash against the free-scoring Tanzanians will be their first since claiming a record sixth title at the expense Cameroon ’s Coton Sport last year.

The Tanzanian champions, also referred to as “Yanga” are bent on formulating one of the biggest upsets in the history of the most prestigious club competition by crashing out the holders with motivation from U.S. President’s Barack Obama “can do spirit.”

Yanga, who has never advanced past the 1/16 th stage of the premier club competition are seeking to break this jinx on their sixth appearance and rightly set the tone with a 14-1 aggregate win over minnows Etoile d’Or Mirontsy at the prelims.

Also, the presence of 10 players in the Tanzanian squad at the CHAN tournament in Cote D’Ivoire should give Ahly trainer, Jose Manuel some headache as they begin the journey to their seventh title.

Modest-performers Mrisho Ngasa, Nurdin Bakari, Jerry Tegete and their colleagues have inspired Serbian coach Dusan Kondic’s team with the experience gathered from the tournament restricted to local based footballers, and will be expected to play key roles towards attaining victory.

The expected return of Kenyan-import Boniface Ambani from trials with a Chinese club is also a major boost for Tanzanians, whose Chairman; Imam Madega insists they can oust Ahly.
"Ahli are a good team, yes, but we are also good, we are going to make history in Egypt . We have a very good squad, good goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders as well as strikers; we are here to make history,” he told local media.

For Ahly, there is no better boost than the return of influential player, Mohamed Aboutreika, who has recovered from consistent injuries ahead of their crucial clash.

Elsewhere in Luanda , Primero Agosto of Angola will face former champions, Canon Yaounde from Cameroon , whilst Senegal ’s AS Douanes lock horns with Kano Pillars of Nigeria in Dakar .

Ugandan champions, KCC face a tricky test against South Africa ’s Supersport United, just as Nigeria ’s Heartland’s trip to Rabat as guest of AS FAR.

In Tunis , 1991 Champions, Club Africain will play host to Djoliba AC of Mali, while debutants, Ittihad Khemisset face two-times winners, Asante Kotoko in Ghana ’s Western city, Sekondi.

DR Congo champions, T.P. Mazembe are favoured in their meeting with Atletico Petroleos of Angola , with the return of the likes of Tresor Mputu Mabi, Mihayo Kazembe, Mbenza Bedi, Kidiaba Muteba, Ngoy Mbomboko and Mvete Luyeye, all members of the Leopards team that claimed emerged winners of the maiden CHAN tournament.

Former winners, Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia will face Maghrebian fellows Amel S.O. de Chlef of Algeria with J.S.K ( Algeria ) versus Ahly Tripoli ( Libya ) completing the North African clashes.

Cote D’Ivoire champions, ASEC Mimosas will be hoping for a perfect start to their quest for an unprecedented 10th appearance at the mini-league stage against Burkinabe veterans Etoile Filante at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan .

Head trainer, Patrick Liewig reckons a tough outing against the Ouagadougou-based club, but remains optimistic of their chances.

“I watched their last game against Heart of Lions ( Ghana ) in Accra and they are a strong side. They have athletic attackers and are very tactical.

“We will approach the game with our style, possessive football and with that we can achieve the results.”

ASEC’s bitterest rivals, Africa Sports will also face Zesco United of Zambia , whilst Ajax Cape Town of South Africa face Monomotopa FC of Zambia in an-all Southern Africa affair.

Last year’s losing finalists; Coton Sport will welcome Mangasport of Gabon to Garoua and in Tripoli , Libyan champions Al-Ittihad will face Sudanese champions, El-Merrikh.

The second leg matches has been scheduled for April 3-5, with the winners progressing to the 1/8th stage.
