If you say that accountability is the reason that airlines are not owned by governments, are you implying that government owned airlines are incapable of accountability?

If government owned entities are incapable of accountability, why do governments continue to run entire countries?

Is the argument that freer markets, with less interference from governments, are more efficient, tolerate less waste, involve more controls and fluid decision making, use a wider vetting net and are more natural than imposed, more germane to the matter?

The gentlemen you mentioned did not exist in a vacuum. They existed in a culture. One can argue that the concept of accountability in and of itself is not fundamental, because it goes with an entire culture that goes with it. You may have a CEO who is accountable, but he may end up being fought by the machine of government because of that very reason.
