Messi returns to Argentina squad as Aguero misses out

Mar 07 2019 - 18:47

The Barcelona captain has not played for his country since the World Cup, but Lionel Messi is in Argentina's latest international squad.

Lionel Messi is back in the Argentina squad for the first time in almost nine months, although Sergio Aguero has been left out.
Messi has not played for his country since the 2018 World Cup, where Jorge Sampaoli's side lost to eventual winners France in the last 16.
Sampaoli's successor Lionel Scaloni has been unable to call upon the Barcelona captain for any of Argentina's matches since taking charge.
But Messi will soon make his international return as he is in the Argentina squad for upcoming friendly matches against Venezuela and Morocco.
There is no room for Aguero, however, with Scaloni favouring Lautaro Martinez, Giovanni Simeone and Dario Benedetto over the Manchester City star.
Inter striker Mauro Icardi also misses out, as he has not played for his club since February 9 amid a stand-off that began with him being stripped of the captaincy.
Gonzalo Higuain is another high-profile attacking omission. Like Aguero, Chelsea's on-loan Juventus striker has not been involved for the Albiceleste since Russia 2018.
Scaloni has once again taken the opportunity to shuffle his pack and call up a host of uncapped players.
Goalkeepers Esteban Andrada and Juan Musso could feature for the first time, while Gonzalo Montiel and Lisandro Martinez are newcomers in defence.
Midfielder Matias Zaracho has been called up before, but the 20-year-old winger is still hoping for a debut cap, while Ivan Marcone and Domingo Blanco are similarly inexperienced on the international stage.
The new face among the forwards is Matias Suarez, a 30-year-old attacker who has scored three times in six league games for River Plate since joining from Belgrano in January.
There is also a return for Manuel Lanzini, who has not featured for Argentina since damaging knee ligaments in a World Cup warm-up match against Haiti last May.
Argentina will compete in the Copa America this year, having been drawn in Group B alongside Colombia, Paraguay and special guests Qatar.
Messi and Argentina have been on the losing side in each of the past two Copa America finals, beaten by Chile on penalties on both occasions.

ARGENTINA-CHILE

Mechi itachezwa saa tisa kamili za usiku(3:00)

Argentina are set to play host to Chile at the Estadio Unico Madre de Cities on Thursday for their latest FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture.

Argentina come into this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Ricardo Gareca's Peru last November in a FIFA World Cup qualifying game. First-half goals from Stuttgart forward Nicolas Gonzalez and Inter Milan striker Lautar Martinez ensured victory for Lionel Scaloni's Argentina.

Chile, on the other hand, beat Cesar Farias' Bolivia 2-1 in March in an international friendly game. First-half goals from veteran Palestino attacker Luis Antonio Jimenez and Leon winger Jean Meneses sealed the deal for Martin Lasarte's Chile. Cruzeiro striker Marcelo Moreno scored the consolation goal for Bolivia.

Argentina vs Chile Head-to-Head

In 92 head-to-head encounters between the two sides, Argentina hold the clear advantage. They have won 61 games, lost eight and drawn 23.

The two countries last faced each other in 2019, with the game ending in a 0-0 draw. The likes of Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas (Chile) and Paulo Dybala and Lautaro Martinez (Argentina) were unable to find the net.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has named a strong squad. The Paris Saint-Germain duo of Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes, Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez and the Ajax defensive pair of Nicolas Tagliafico and Lisandro Martinez have all been named.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Atalanta defender Cristian Romero will make their debuts from the start. Meanwhile, centre-back Jose Luis Palomino, right-back Nahuel Molina, midfielder Emiliano Buendia and forward Julian Alvarez could make their debuts from the bench.

Meanwhile, Chile manager Martin Lasarte will be unable to call upon the services of Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal, who has tested positive for COVID-19. Real Betis goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, Bologna centre-back Gary Medel, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Charles Aranguiz and Inter Milan forward Alexis Sanchez have all been included.

Huachipato goalkeeper Gabriel Castellon, Universidad Catolica midfielder Juan Leiva and Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton could all earn their debut caps.

Chile, on the other hand, will certainly miss star midfielder Arturo Vidal. In his absence the likes of Charles Aranguiz and Erick Pulgar will have to step up, while experienced forwards Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas could prove to be crucial as well.

A close match is on the cards, but Argentina should edge past Chile.
