STINGER! Da Silva is afforded too much space out on the left-hand side, and he drifts infield, lashing an effort towards goal that is right at Romero but too hot to handle as he parries straight up.

Aguero has bene hauled off for Banega.

Another booking, and this time it goes to Higuain. The striker chased for a ball with Cueva and appeared to get there first, but then dug his studs into the ground and clattered the midfielder.

WHAT A CHANCE! Peru continue to trample all over Argentina. Trauco is the setup man once again, playing a pass that Rudiaz sprinted onto. He glanced past one defender, and applied the finish, but it was wide when he should have scored.

Zabaleta is booked for a foul on Flores, and will now be suspended for the next game.

OVER THE BAR! Guerrero attacks a cross from Trauco, but he places his header well over the top. Moments later, the striker controls another long ball expertly and keeps his balance

  • 90+2'
There's a free header for Otamendi which is ruled out for an offside. Peru try to launch one last attack, but there's no service forthcoming, and the referee blows the final whistle to end it!
  • 90'
The free-kick is pumped into the box and Peru attack it with a header, but it lacks any sort of power and is right down the throat of Romero. Guerrero could have done better there, especially given the form he's in tonight.
  • 88'
Guerrero's balance is incredible, and it takes an illegal shove from Funes Mori to bring him to the turf. The defender has had a torrid game, with some blame in both Peru goals. He's lucky that he scored at the other end to take some of the heat off his performance.
  • 86'
No less than Peru deserved, that goal. Argentina's advantage lasted all of seven minutes and to be quite honest, they shot themselves in the foot. That entire sequence was completely preventable.
  • 84'
That goal is Cueva's last action as Lobaton enters the fray.
  • 84'
NO MISTAKE FROM CUEVA! The midfielder gets the goal that is just reward for his sterling second-half performance. Hard and high to the left - no chance for Romero.
  • 82'
PENALTY TO PERU! Mascherano's wertched back pass was to blame, as Guerrero drove in front of Funes Mori, before going down under contact from the defender. Yellow card for the Everton man and a chance to tie things up for the hosts!
  • 79'
Well isn't that just a kick in the...donuts for Peru. They've been absolutely dominant in the second half, and it was looking a matter of time before they added a second against a toothless Argentina.

He hasn't been at his best defensively, but what a crucial attacking contribution!

Brazil are afraid of Messi - Pratto
Nov 09 2016 - 10:44

Thursday will see rivals Argentina and Brazil go head-to-head in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.
Argentina forward Lucas Pratto claims Brazil fear midfield maestro Lionel Messi as the two South American giants prepare to lock horns.

Thursday will see CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying leaders Brazil host rivals Argentina in Belo Horizonte.

The stakes are high for Argentina, who are five points adrift of Brazil in sixth after 10 matches, and Pratto heaped pressure on the hosts with five-time Ballon d'Or Messi back in the squad having missed the past three qualifiers due to a knee injury.

"They know that Leo is very tough. They are a little scared," Pratto - based in Brazil with Atletico Mineiro - told Argentine newspaper Ole.

"Or maybe more than a little."

Messi's return is a boost for Argentina, who have struggled in the Barcelona star's absence.

While the 29-year-old was injured, Argentina lost to Paraguay and drew with Peru and Venezuela.

Brazil, meanwhile, have won four consecutive qualifiers.

Messi shows off new tattoo ahead of crunch Brazil clash

Nov 10 2016 - 20:32
Lionel Messi warmed up for Argentina's World Cup qualifier with Brazil while sporting a brand new tattoo bearing his famous number 10.
Lionel Messi showed off his latest artistic endeavour as Argentina trained ahead of Thursday's key World Cup qualifier against Brazil.

The 29-year-old, who is firmly back in Edgardo Bauza's plans after initially declaring he would retire from international football in June, was seen sporting a new tattoo on his lower left leg.

The Barcelona star has covered up his old ink - which comprised an assortment of flowers, footballs, wings and a sword - with an entire dark 'sock' in which the number 10 and the hand print of his son Thiago can be seen.

Argentina posted a picture of Messi's new look on their official Twitter account, along with the words: "The 10 tattooed on the left peg, and the flag of Argentina in the heart".

The tattoo has, almost inevitably, caused a stir among supporters on social media - especially given that Barca team-mate Neymar, whom he will face in Belo Horizonte, displayed fresh designs on both legs only last month.

Whatever the reason behind the change, Argentina fans will be hoping it serves as a good luck charm for their side, given they sit five points behind Brazil in the South American qualifying section after 10 matches.

Bauza explains Aguero omission

Nov 10 2016 - 20:28
Sergio Aguero missed out on a start for Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Brazil.
Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza explained his decision not to include Sergio Aguero in his starting line-up for the clash against Brazil.

Bauza has named an attacking four of Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria and Enzo Perez for the World Cup qualifier on Thursday.

The 58-year-old said his decision to include Perez was down to the opposition his team were facing in Belo Horizonte.

"I opted for Di Maria and Enzo Perez because I believe they will be able to keep up the physical side," Bauza told a news conference.

"Enzo Perez played in this position for two years in the selection, because it is there that he began to play.

"More than anything, we are thinking of the rival."

Bauza regains Messi after the Barcelona star missed three qualifiers – all of which Argentina failed to win.

The results have seen Bauza's team fall to sixth in the table, but he is happy to have a healthy Messi back.

"Messi arrived well, without problems," he said.

After their meeting with Brazil, Argentina host Colombia on Tuesday.
