AZAM TV has today unveiled digital Direct to Home service in Kenya. The service which will be broadcast via satellite will step up competition to existing providers such as Multi-choice, Star times and Zuku.

The new service will offer 60 local and international channels and will cost Kshs. 870 per month. The fully installed AZAM TV setup is retailing at a very affordable Kshs 6,300 or Kshs 2,905 for a decoder and smartcard only for viewers who already have satellite dishes.

The AZAM TV service was created in Tanzania with the African viewer in mind. It was officially launched in Tanzania on 16th December 2013. In just under a year since then it has sold over 150,000 full decoder kits.

AZAM Media was formed to challenge the "comfy" positions of the existing TV entertainment providers. It has three divisions: AZAMTV - a Pay TV platform, Uhai Productions - a studio complex which produces many of the programmes which you will run on AZAMTV and also owns two ultra-modern outside broadcast units (with a third on the way) which allows AZAM tv cover live events, most notably the Vodacom Premier League, with high clarity.

"The full digital switchover is set to happen on 30th December 2014 so people will soon be making choices on which decoder they will need to buy. The existing Pay TV operators account for 10% of the 5 Million TV Households. AZAM TV is therefore here to fill this gap, and make digital TV more affordable and accessible to Kenyans" noted the group CEO Rhys Torrington

Mr Torrington also explained that Kenya is a great place to do business and clearly has the most vibrant and discerning entertainment and technology market in East Africa where consumers are always keen to look for new options.

Race for digital-TV viewers heats up as decoder prices tumble

On Friday, Tanzania-based pay television Azamtv launched in the country, becoming the latest pay television entrant in the market, in a week that also saw MultiChoice Kenya's subsidiary GOtv cut the prices of its decoders to Sh1, 799 from the previous Sh3, 399.

The entry of Azamtv is set to increase competition in the lower market segment of pay television, with the launch of its package that retails at Sh870 per month.

Azamtv subscribers will need to pay Sh6,300 for the decoder, satellite dish and installation fees. Those with satellite dishes will pay Sh2,905.

The Group is also present in Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique and South Africa.

Azam TV plans to rollout our operations into Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia and Sierra Leone in 2015.

Tanzania's Azam TV Launches In Kenya With Budget Satellite TVkTwitterGoogle

Azam TV was launched today by Tanzanian company Azam. Azam TV is a Satellite TV promising pocket friendly costs for PayTV in Kenya. Currently the company had already rolled out to subscribers, as we speak has signed up 1000 subscribers in Kenya in a silent roll-out before the launch today. This is over the last month.

Azam is a big brand that is part pf the Bakresssa Group with products like flour, confectionery, transport, oil, juices, ice cream, soft drinks and other fast moving goods. Azam is the latest venture which started last year in December in Tanzania and according to Martin Abuya, General Manager Azam TV, is doing very good with over 80,000 subscribers in the one year they have been operational.

Azam TV comes in the market just when Kenya is just days to the deadlines of digital migration with Nairobi's date set for December 30th. The current players Azam TV competes with are DsTV, GoTV, Startimes and Zuku Tv alongside numerous free to air set top boxes available in Kenya.

Azam is already well established in Tanzania where it started before rolling out to Uganda. Kenya is the third country where the Satellite TV is available and they have a plan to roll out further within sub-Saharan countries where their Satellite footprint covers.

Azam TV offers 50 channels in the single bouquet it offers for a price of Kshs 870 a month and the decoder. The decoder for Azam is usually Kshs 9950 but in the Christmas offer the company is selling the full setup to Kshs 6300 which is quite high compared to existing market rates from other providers, but Mr Abuya says the real value is the ongoing product and value for money.

The setup comprises the 90cm dish and the decoder. The program list has 50 channels that have Tanzanian channels, Uganda Channels, Kenya channels and even Arabic and Indian channels alongside international channels like Fox, FX, Nickelodeon, Investigation Discovery and NatGeo Gold among others. Martin says that the free to air channels remain free even if you get disconnected.

Unique proposition for Azam TV is quality of transmission and value for money which is at Kshs 870 monthly, single bouquet for the 50 channels. According to Anthony Itebete, the Finance Manager, Azam has curated the content and even with an Islam background of the owners of the company, they do not have religious content to ensure it is agreeable to all kinds of consumers. This also done ensuring that the content aired is as family friendly as possible, says Anthony.

The company already has their team ready including a call center at their Kindaruma road office alongside their other staff. Azam started with three channels last year and has gone on to grow to 50 channels, others coming too.

According to Anthony, Azam Media also does content production and has equipment better than what rival paytv providers have in Kenya, capable of shooting and transmitting HD content. That's what they use to air Tanzanian football matches on Vodafone League One channel which is one of the four sports channels.

Azam Satellite TV Officially In Kenya The Decoder Review

Photo2045.jpg

Sunday, November 9th, 2014
This past Saturday I had a chance of installing Azam TV in Nairobi and here is the review. Before this installation I must admit that I never knew Azam were live in Kenya. I only knew of Azam as the Tanzanian TV company to be soon launched elsewhere in East Africa.

Azam TV has a very good looking white in colour decoder that has features that are much more superior to either GOtv or Dstv. By the way the subscription cost is only Ksh850 per month, so much better than the Dstv access package that has a monthly price tag of Ksh870.

Azam TV belongs to the Bakhresa Group, commonly known for selling food products like grains and milk. By the way the Bakhresa group also owns a football club Azam FC and also operates ferry services in Tanzania. This is a company that will give Dstv a serious run for their money.

What's in the package and how much does it cost?

A full Azam kit goes for Ksh9950 which includes two boxes. The first smaller decoder box and the bigger box which has a 90cm dish, Ku band LNB and Coaxial cable. I have never seen a dish come completely sealed in a box before this installation.

The Azam branded coaxial cable is of very low quality though, it's not at all comparable to an Astel or even Jacobs Coaxial Cable.

No HDMI cable is supplied with the decoder.

The Azam package also has one of the tiniest LNBs I have ever seen. It's pretty clear that cost reduction was the first point when it came to ordering some of the parts.

The decoder review

This is why I was writing this post in the first place. The Azam NL-S7812 decoder is white in color and with five buttons CH+, CH-, Vol +,Vol- and a Power button. Missing though are the Menu and OK buttons so if you get this decoder, take care of your remote because if you loose or break it, it going to be hard, actually impossible to manipulate the decoder.

The decoder is powered with an external 3 pin Adapter connected at the back. What else is at the back apart form the Power button? As you can see in the following photo, the Azam decoder has a HDMI port and RCA port for connecting it to your TV. So you can connect the decoder to two TV sets if both the ports are used. The LNB port also has a loop out next to it although in my own opinion this should have been made into an RF OUT port.

The USB port can be used to play movies and music on the decoder as well as record TV programs on an External Hard Disk or big capacity Flash Disk. The best thing about this decoder is that you can do anything you want with the recorded programs unlike the Dstv Explora where there is no external port to get out the movies to watch on a laptop computer.

So that you don't have to reach over at the back just to access the USB port, I would advise you to get a Back to back USB cable. This way you connect one side of the cable permanently at the back and your external storage devices to the other side of the cable.

Which Satellite does Azam TV use?
Azam TV uses the French owned Eutelsat 7A satellite positioned at 7 degrees east. This will make it possible for Azam to compete with Big Expensive Brother Dstv on the African Continent. For my first installation, I never used the Azam dish but repositioned an already installed dish.

I used the Azam supplied LNB an it performed the same as the Eurostar LNB that I removed after repositioning the dish. The highest signal quality on the Azam decoder was 60%. Strangely though you could here the TV station tuned at the back while the Menu Signal strength and Quality bars were displayed on the screen.

So this is where the MBC channels migrated to after pulling a Houdini stunt on us on both 7W and 8West positions. Strangely though, there are no Gospel Channels on the Azam bouquet. I guess it has to do with the fact that the owners of Azam TV are not Christians but Arab Muslims. You can check the whole list of channels available on the Azam package here. The package is exactly the same out Tanzanian brothers are receiving. I expect a Kenyan version website from Azam TV very soon

Azam Media scales up capacity with Eutelsat to expand African Pay Tv Offer

Capacity leased on EUTELSAT 7B's powerful African beam

Dar es Salaam, Dubai, Paris, 10 March 2015
– Azam Media, owned by Tanzanian conglomerate Bakhresa Group, is ramping up satellite capacity through a new transponder leased on the powerful EUTELSAT 7B satellite. Complementing capacity used on the copositioned EUTELSAT 7A satellite, it will host new services for the rapidly growing AzamTV pay-TV platform. The contract was announced today at Cabsat Dubai.

Launched just 18 months ago, AzamTV already counts 200,000 subscribers in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. The new capacity will enable AzamTV to extend its services to Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi, South Sudan and Zimbabwe with additional content. Further expansion is planned using the company's state-of-the-art studio complex and headend facility in Dar es Salaam that was inaugurated on 6 March by Jakaya Kikwete, the President of Tanzania.

AzamTV is boosting its line-up of over 55 channels with a new offer called "Azam Reloaded", launched on 1 March and featuring a full decoder/dish kit for $55 and three package options:

  • "Azam Pure" at a monthly subscription of the local equivalent of $5, offering three home-grown channels and popular free-to-air channels;
  • "Azam Plus" at a monthly subscription of $8, comprising an additional selection of over 35 international channels;
  • "Azam Play" at a monthly subscription of $10, including premium content such as telenovelas, reality shows, education and dedicated football club channels including Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Rhys Torrington, CEO of Azam Media, commented on the new contract: "Eutelsat's satellite capacity and unrivalled DTH experience enabled us to launch an exceptional entertainment offer at a great price. This new contract equips us with the resources to fast track our development and further enhance the services we offer subscribers across our target markets. It also paves the way for an acceleration of HD content that raises the bar for further quality."

Michel Azibert, Chief Commercial and Development Officer of Eutelsat, added: " AzamTV is one of the most exciting digital broadcasting ventures launched in Africa over the last 18 months. Compelling and attractively priced content, a strong retail network and high-power reach over Africa are the assets Azam has assembled to play its part in the digital broadcasting wave. We are delighted to be their chosen satellite partner and to see our 7° East position, occupied by two copositioned satellites, firmly rooted in Africa's TV landscape."

Azam TV gets clearance to broadcast UPL games

KAMPALA.
Tanzania-based pay television company, Azam, in conjunction with Fufa, is now at liberty to commence telecasting the Uganda Premier League (UPL) football matches.

This follows yesterday's High Court ruling that threw out an application filed by Uganda Super League (USL) in which it had sought for a protection order from court while it pursued an arbitration process as a remedy to a broadcast rights dispute.

Azam have been fighting to wrestle the soccer league broadcast rights from South African company, SuperSport, who signed a contract with USL in 2011.

In his one hour ruling, presiding judge Yasin Nyanzi held that since Fufa had already terminated the contract it had with USL that mandated SuperSport to telecast the local matches, there was no status quo for court to preserve by granting a protection order as prayed for by USL.

"The applicant (USL) seeks an order of this court to stop the termination of the contract; the termination which has already occurred…" ruled Justice Nyanzi, adding: "a protection order in this case serves no purpose because the applicant has failed to establish his case in the first and most important test."

"To issue an interim order, there must be a status-quo to protect and here there is none. In the result, I dismiss the application and I award costs to the respondent."

Alternatively, Justice Nyanzi in his ruling, suggested to USL to pursue arbitration mechanisms in resolving this impasse since their prayer for the protection order they had sought had failed as there was nothing to preserve.

Pay damages
The court also ordered USL to foot all the legal costs that Fufa incurred in defending this case. Fufa legal counsel Alex Luganda was a relieved man after the ruling.

"Azam can go ahead to televise the Uganda Premier League matches after the interim court injunction was lifted," he told the Fufa website.

Express versus SC Villa will be the first match to be televised at Wankulukuku tomorrow.

USL board chairman Kavuma Kabenge said they are filing the main suit. "We are filing a fully-fledged suit tomorrow (today) as advised by the Judge who - in his wisdom - has ruled that the status quo has since changed, thus dismissing our application seeking protection of our partner's (SuperSport) rights.

"Since the respondent has voluntarily failed to submit to arbitration, we are now filing a suit asking court to compel them to submit."
The never-ending woes between USL and Fufa resumed early this year when the former dragged the latter to court for terminating a contract, on grounds that SuperSport had failed to telecast football matches.

To that effect, the termination of the MoU that Fufa had with USL saw the unveiling of Azam TV to telecast the matches, a move that did not go well with SuperSport, who argued that its contract was still on until the end of 2016.

The same court had earlier granted USL an interim order blocking Azam TV from commencing the telecast but the grace period of 30 days elapsed.

I would welcome any sponsor with some loose change to invest here. What i would like to know however is the localised package of the pay tv before deciding whether its worth my dime.
The contract to broadcast local league however may hit headwinds as kenyan football management is in serious lack of direction; i am hoping they signed the contract with the right guys.
