..I think ppl are over reacting.

..I heard Obama mentioning Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, etc etc a few times when he was speaking at the CEO roundtable.

..Also, Kenya was represented in the CEO's dinner with President Obama.

..If Tanzania wins, then Kenya wins too. There are a lot of Kenyan companies that have invested in Tanzania. If I am not mistaken, Kenya ranks as # 2 among foreign investors in Tanzania.

Kabaridi, u really wrote your heart out.....splendid and concise. We shouldn't really bow down to LGBT legitimization. We have better judiciary assignments to realize.

Our tourism might have received a shot in the arm with Egypt going down but i still insist, overt declaration of diplomatic hostilities ain't gonna take us nowhere.....our systems are tied there.

I am for Russia & China inclusion but in a manner not to jeopardize existing western alliances, cooperation trade treaties, and investments. Kenya is a service based economy, boosted by Agriculture, (+floriculture), tea, and those green stuffs we daily ship to europe, we benefit from AGOA and EU leniency to sell our goods there, and in kind thousand s of families back home get a livelihood. If serious travel advisories are to be given to Kenya, we are to incur huge losses, KQ though being an African modeled airline, it reported fewer than normal western visitors. This is a consequence of the western crunch but also diplomatic advisories; trust me, they affect our tourism big time.
NB: AMERICANAS+EUROPEANS still remain to be our biggest tourism sources, not the Asia's, Chinese and Russians.

As u can see my argument is not centered in what happens in Nairobi but the lager economic metropolis. The Khat industry being one example i believe UK may have voluntarily sabotaged Kenya on a mere technicality just to pass a message. That move leaves 500,000 livelihoods in a limbo.
This leaves us with one choice, Go EAST, but we don't need to announce in front of a diplomatic counsel dinner as we witnessed the other day that we going east.
About VAT, the president has better advisors giving him requisite economic counsel as of to the possible consequences of the VAT bill. That VAT bill will raise costs of living whose ripple effects will affect even lending/existing credit rates soon after its conception. Its a bill telling off investors.....before inflation normalizes, its damage may have already surpassed the benefits.
I recommend your remedy, strengthen our institutions, seal KRA loop holes and keep watch on devolution as we amend the bill while coercing Tullow to fire up those engines and fast..

Cost of business in Kenya vis a vis the rest of the region will double if sth is not done asap esp on our electricity tarriffs, plus the soon to be introduced VAT bill remains to be bad news. I wont pretend to smile; there's nothing to smile about. Uhuru needs a miracle to take off our economy.....seems strikes planned for this year alone will slow him to a meager 3% GDP growth. Considering the first half nothing considerable happened, elections/strikes, its a plus if he surpases that.

Kabaridi and mwathai, please come in for a reality check. Are u confident with our market trends, (NSE), and how it is responding? Speculative anxiety is kinda keeping investors at bay.....

Easy man. There's no cause for alarm. For those of us who are in this racket, we know there's no cause for alarm. First the economy grew 5.2 % in the last quarter. It is likely to do better teachers strike or not. This is beccause teachers are no producers. they are-in a way consumers. Therefore their strike has no immediate impact on the production of goods and services.
Let's turn to NSE. YES the 20-share index is down but the all share index is above 100 per cent. What does that tell us. The 20 share index should be read together with the other indices Viz: All share index and the NSE/FTSE25. If they are all down, then things are elephant. The NSE index is down because investors are getting out of one or two companies in the index. If you are familiar with the trend in Kenya, many listed companies pay their dividends around May. Before then many foreign investors flood the market buying left right and centre. But their interest is simply the dividend after that they sale or demand quickly fizzles out. That is what is happening and it will soon end. It is not a reflection of the health of the Kenyan economy.
As for obama visiting Tanzania, iam told he offered US$7 billion for the entire Africa not just to Tanzania. Tanzanians have a habit of blowing their receipts out of proportion. The controversial Ethiopian hydro dam will produce 6000MW and will cost $4.7 billion to construct. How big is the Ubungo plant? how much power does it produce? If it cost US$7 billion to do whatever was done on it, then probably 75% of those monies is inn somebody's pocket.
As for the cost of power in kenya, Chief keep in touch with events in your country. Power generation is expected to be 3700MW in 2016. Much of this will be generated from geothermal and wind power which are cheaper sources of energy. This means that by 2017 power could be down 50%. Good night

Coincidentally, Luos are among conservative African ethnic groupings, adhering to their traditions even when everyone thinks otherwise. For instance, in Tanzania and Kenya where they are found, courts of law know them very well as people who disregard everyone’s traditional customs, and if possible even laws, to give room to theirs.

But leave the conservativeness of the Luos aside; Kenyans, perhaps due to historical trends and an attitude to embrace everything western, find it impossible to believe that Obama as a personality was created by Americans to serve Americans. Making Obama’s two elections a big deal in Kenya and marketing his roots globally has not changed this fact.

Obama considers himself an African American by ethnicity, an American citizen, and a politician. He warned Kenyans in 2006 while visiting there as a senator telling them: “I am not a Kenyan politician; I am an American politician.” But Kenyans didn’t get it.

Obama doesn’t hate his roots, but as an American president he has an obligation to serve American interests first and foremost. He was not elected to serve Kenya; he was elected to serve the United States of America.

Thus, in serving his country, Obama found himself readying for a trip to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania bypassing Kenya, the country of his father. Why? Speculations can tell a lot, but here is a bitter fact: Obama is the third US president to bypass Kenya while visiting Tanzania.

Some Kenyan analysts put blame on President Uhuru Kenyatta and Vice President William Ruto because they are suspects. Too bad for them; was President Daniel arap Moi a suspect when President Bill Clinton visited Tanzania in 2000 leaving Kenya out of schedule? How about Mwai Kibaki in 2008 when President George W. Bush came to Tanzania?

Notably, Kenya despite being a staunch US puppet during the Cold War, has not managed to attract the attention of Washington in the post-Cold War era, even after going to war with hungry mobs in Somalia to defend American security interests.

Tanzania may have embraced the African brand of socialism called Ujamaa during the Cold War, totally different from communism, but both considered by the West as repugnant, but its foreign policy carried humanistic values and placed Tanzania on the world map in a very unique way.

Furthermore, Tanzania was the beacon of freedom-fighting in Africa, even leading and headquartering Africa’s Liberation Committee.

Likewise, Tanzania’s post-independence policies made the country a different nation state in Africa and nothing much has changed today despite some severe challenges. Frankly, Tanzania earned respect and it’s time to receive the pay-off.

It wasn’t a coincidence to see the newly-appointed Chinese president, Xi Jinping, landing in Tanzania before anywhere else in Africa and addressing the continent from Dar es Salaam. As we know China considers Tanzania a far durable and true friend more than any other African country.

In the same fashion, Obama will also speak to the whole continent, the American nation, and the world about investing in and trading with Africa. Moreover, Obama is coming at a time when several presidents will be attending a smart partnership summit in Dar es Salaam, and thereafter a first ladies’ event will follow with Bush and his wife Laura in attendance.

Kenyans should brace for more things to come because Tanzania, however humble the country is, is flying. Just look at the number of guests and the series of events that have been coming and taking place in Tanzania in the past few years!

There is a message! Kenyans, please chill out; comparatively, Tanzania is flying on the international stage!

I have read this very objective analysis of the Luo tendency both in kenya and Tanzania. Yoy know they are noisy people. Characters who fight if the lose a football match. To that extend you were right that Obama offended some people in Kenya by choosing not to visit Kenya.
You were wrong on one respect however, you confused the Luo disappointment with kenyans' disappointment. If other Kenyans-apart from the Luo had such deep feelings, then they would have obeyed him and voted Raila Amolo Odinga, his fellow Luo and candidate of choice. I think Obama spurned Kenya they way kenya spurned him when it refused to vote in his candidate of choice. So luos were disappointed and they have used the fact that they control NMG to spread propaganda to the effect he spurned Kenya because id ICC. The US is not a signatory of the Rome statutes how can it honour what it is not am member of?

Obama did not visit Nigeria and it was no big deal. It was no big deal when Tanzania hosted Clinton and George Bush in 2000 and 2006 respectively. Because they were not Luos. It was no big deal but it was made do by a a few europhiles via nation media which also owns citizen.
As for Kenyan's fighting al Shabaab to protect Us interest. That is absolutely untrue. Kenya fought al shabaab to protect its country from counterfeit smuggled goods, protect its tourism industry and protect its youth from brain washing by al-shabaab. And after knocking them out, Somalia has a semblance of order.
As for Tanzania flying. I do not know what that means. President are simply Tourists who probably bring nothing else to the countries they visit? How did Tanzania gains from the previous high profile visits?

On that US$7bio. Tanzania is to receive not less than US$3bio and for the US$9 bio. from private sector TZ is to receive a half of that! Still not a mean achievement considering the fact we qualified for MCC phase II that will be btn US$ 800mio-1bio! Symbion has just lunched 400MW gas-electricity power project worthing US$1bio.(Financing different) apart the 350MW from Japanese one in Kinyerezi. Ethiopia dam project is not financed by the US do ur homework

Do you have a problem understanding English? I said the Rennaisance dam that will produce 6000Mw will cost $4.7 bn then asked the question if the project in TZ -Ithink the Ubungo gas station cost $7bn how much power is it producing? I did not refer to the source of funding of the project!
