According to Kenya Transporters Association Chief Executive Officer Mombasa branch Dennis Oloo, Kenyan truck drivers are met with harsh treatment upon arrival in Tanzania where they are denied access to essential services like hotel and lavatories.

‘’It’s really inhumane how our drivers are being treated in other East African countries. Tanzania for instance, they are not even allowed to buy water from the residents, they are forced to carry containers where they relieve themselves after being locked out of hotels and latrine services"

‘’The situation is currently worse to an extend that our drivers are labeled corona by the residents, and Tanzania Government is doing nothing about it as if the pandemic is a Kenyan disease being spread by Kenyans,’’ he complained.

The drivers however, have breadth a sigh of relief after Mombasa County Government heed to their cries and waved the Ksh6,00 that they were being charged for the mandatory coronavirus test.

The lorry drivers who deliver cargo across East Africa, in a month, they are required to take two tests to confirm their infection status. The test result is valid for 14 days. The first test was costing Kshs. 6,000 with subsequent tests being charged at Kshs. 2,000 per test.

Meanwhile, details of coronavirus status in Tanzania remain scanty since there are no reports of new infections since the last information was released on April 29, 2020, this despite her citizens testing positive for the virus in the neighboring countries.

Zambia on Monday closed its joint border with neighboring Tanzania after experiencing the highest spike of coronavirus infections last week, local media reported.
