Cost comparison SGR Kenya vs SGR Tanzania

Isitoshe Nairobi tuna underground electricity cable inayozunguka Nairobi. Inaitwa Nairobi ring underground cable. This is the only underground electricity cable in East Africa surrounding a city.

Ukinionyesha miradi kama hii Kenya on Transmission line and systems, nahama! I challenge u!

Google Dar-Zanzibar interconnector, then Mwanza-Ukerewe interconnector! Hivyo ni vitu tumeafanya miaka mingi tena undersea power cables!

Zanzibar gets 100 MW cable link to mainland

Oct 25, 2012

25 October 2012 – The semi-autonomous group of islands that form Zanzibar off the Tanzanian coast is having a 100 MW submarine cable laid. The cable, which stretches from Zanzibar’s Unguja Island to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s capital, is being financed by the US government and is part of a US$206.5 million package being provided to the Tanzanian energy sector.

The cable, which is about 39 km long, is expected to be completed in December 2012.This project will cost someUS$28.1 million, with 24 communication fibre optic lines and 400 reserved emergency wires.Zanzibar has been struggling with the problem of power shortage for years. The islands experienced a blackout for almost three months after the existing submarine cable, which connects Tanzania’s mainland and the islands, failed in December 2009.

The new cable being installed will be more than double the capacity of the existing cable.

The contract to manufacture, deliver, and install this submarine power cable was signed in April 2010 at Stone Town by representatives of the USMillennium Challenge Corporation and the winning firm, Viscas Corporation of Japan.

Other key components of the Zanzibar interconnection project are also approaching completion. Kalpataru Power Transmission is erecting 195 new monopoles that will hold 37 kilometres of overhead power lines to bring power from Ras Fumba, where the submarine cable makes landfall, to Mtoni near Stone Town where a new substation is being constructed via a joint venture between Alstom Grid and Symbion Power. The substation will receive and distribute power throughout Unguja.

On the mainland, the Millennium Challenge Corporation compact, signed in 2008 between the governments of Tanzania and the US, is also supporting the upgrade of 25 additional power substations, as well as the rehabilitation and expansion of power transmission and distribution lines in seven regions; Mwanza, Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro, Mbeya, Iringa and Kigoma.

Nexans completes subsea cable link to provide reliable power for Pemba Island in Zanzibar

New 25 MVA link to mainland grid has enabled the local population to end years of dependence on unreliable diesel generators

Paris, June 3rd, 2010 – Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has successfully completed a new 75 km subsea power link between Pemba Island, the second largest island in the Zanzibar archipelago, and the National Grid on mainland Tanzania.

The 25 MVA link, opened officially on June 3rd by President Amani Abeid Karume of Tanzania, has enabled Pemba’s population of 300,000 people to end years of dependence on unreliable, erratic diesel generation subject to frequent power cuts. The availability of dependable electrical power is expected to assist the economic and social development of Pemba Island by opening up new economic opportunities and encouraging tourism.

The Pemba cable project has been financed through a grant of 45 million euros from the Norwegian state, while the Zanzibar government has contributed 8 million euros and the Union government 4 million euros. Norplan has managed the project on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ZECO, the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation.

The 36 kV PEX (XLPE) insulated cable was designed and manufactured at Nexans’ specialized subsea cable factory in Halden, Norway and incorporates optical fibre elements supplied by the Rognan factory, also in Norway. The cable, weighing over 4,300 tonnes, was loaded onto Nexans’ own installation vessel, the C/S Nexans Skagerrak, and shipped to the Pemba Channel.

The cable route runs from Tanga on the Tanzanian side to Pemba Island and required installation under challenging conditions. There are shallows on each side, and the cable needed to be floated out for more than four kilometres before the sea bottom falls away steeply, after which the cable was guided down to a depth of 850 metres.

The fast-track project made rapid progress from the initial signing of the contract in 2008 and the new cable started supplying electricity to Pemba from the mainland in early 2010.

“The Pemba Island project is a great example of our proven capability to implement subsea cable links in even the most demanding and difficult condition and within short timescales”, says Krister Granlie, Managing Director of Nexans’ Umbilicals & Submarine High Voltage Business Group. “It is also especially pleasing to see the successful conclusion of a project that will make a real difference to the daily lives of the local population.”

Naona kwenye mambo ya kupanga mpo sawa yaani mipango za siku za usoni mpo vizuri zaidi. Pengine hata mumetushinda kwenye future plans. Lakini kwenye miradi zilizokamilika nadhani tumewashinda. Nyinyi mumeunda 5,896 km za nyaya ya umeme. Wacha nitafute kilomita za nyaya za Kenya zilizokamilika niweke hapa.

most of the projects r U/C even the transmission line btn Morogoro and Makutupora (414km of 220 kV Morogoro - Makutupora Transmission Line project for electrification of SGR2 line (414 km) and Bay extension at Msamvu and Zuzu Grid Substations ) is already in procurement stages!

Naona inawauma sana Malazy kwamba Kenya sisi ni the biggest producer of geothermal power in Africa and also the biggest producer of windpower in Africa. Inauma lakini itabidi mzoee. Saa hii tuna the only DC powerline in Africa.

Mkunya, producer is irrelevant if u can't sell what u produce!

In Kenya Generation, Transmission na Distribution zimegawanywa Kila moja inafanywa na specific state company. Kengen, Kentraco, Kenya power all have their own network of power lines so you will have to combine them together. While in Tz everything is TANESCO.
