Feasibility study, design of southern SGR section ready

PRELIMINARY works such as feasibility study and design of the southern section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) covering Mtwara-Songea-Mbamba Bay is ready, the legislature was informed yesterday.

The Deputy Minister for Works and Transports, Godfrey Kaseke, told MPs that the government is currently looking for an investor to finance the project.

Responding to a supplementary question from Kalambo MP Josephat Kandege, he said that the government will implement the project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

In his basic question, the lawmaker wanted to know the government's plans to construct a railway line from Tunduma to Kasanga and Lake Nyasa so as to open up the surrounding regions of Rukwa and Katavi economically.

The deputy minister affirmed that the government will continue implementing various railway projects as per priority and availability of budgets, citing the Dar es Salaam-Mwanza SGR line and the construction of the Mtwara-Mbambabay railway line.

The railway line will serve Mtwara to Mbamba Bay corridor, complementing coal and iron ore mines at Mchuchuma and Liganga, making Tanzanian coal and iron exports more attractive internationally.

The projected railway line will span 1000 km from Mtwara port to Mbamba Bay through Mchuchuma and Liganga areas, likely to be of great benefit to residents and traders in the southern corridor.

“All these efforts are meant to facilitate regional integration and reduce poverty by stimulating broad economic growth through expanding industrial production and enhancing exports from the corridor,” he explained.

The government has finalized the feasibility study for the construction of the Mpanda-Kalema railway, to strengthen transport in the northern and southern regions of the western lakes zone.

“These projects need a lot of money, and the current government’s priority is to construct the Standard Railway Gauge (SGR) and others will come later,” he stated.

Asa Makanika, Kigoma North MP posed a supplementary question seeking out government plans to construct the Mwandiga- Kagunga road through Gombe National Park, to improve transportation in the Kagunga area.

“I know that this is a very important road to reach Kasanga port, so we will continue working to ensure that we set aside funds to facilitate its construction,” he added.

Ikiwa SGR still itakuwa ngumu kutumika na nchi za SADC! maana wao ni Cape Gauge network! Mzigo itabidi kubadilishwa kuingia wagons zinazoendana na upana wa SGR! Hicho ndo nilichosema hujaelewa nn? Nipe nchi moja ya SADC inayotumia SGR!

Ugandans stranded as Kenya’s inter-counties travel ban bites

Kenya’s decision to halt the movement of interstate buses across its border following a surge in Covid-19 cases has left several Ugandans stranded in the neighbouring East African country.

Last week, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a lockdown which stopped movement in and out of five Kenyan counties of Nairobi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado and Kiambu.

The move has left many travellers stranded on either side of the two countries, with several businesses at the Busia border point now paralysed.

Speaking in Busia, Kenya, Mr Jafari Owour, a bus operator with Simba Coach Services, told the Daily Monitor that they are stuck with several passengers, majority of whom were travelling from Kampala.

Advance booking

“Most of our passengers do advance booking and by the time the travel ban was issued, many had already paid for their tickets,” Mr Owour said on Tuesday.

He added that they were forced to make refunds to 50 travellers, majority of whom were traveling to Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru. Others are still waiting to get their money.

Mr Mudasiru Bahati, a Ugandan traveller who had booked a bus from Kampala to Nairobi, said when he reached Busia, the bus was stopped the journey.

Most affected

“I was supposed to be in Nairobi by Monday but l am still stranded here,” he said, adding that he had spent a night at the bus terminal.

Mr Stephen Bwire, who is among the stranded passengers, said travellers from Kampala in Uganda and Kigali in Rwanda, who were destined for Nairobi and Mombasa, are the most affected.

“We are wondering why Kenya ordered a ban on public transport in the five counties and yet they are allowing travel by air to Nairobi,” he said.

The spike in Covid-19 cases in Kenya has left several people in need of intensive care, especially oxygen support.

Mr Abas Lubega, a clearing agent at the Busia border point, said for the last two days, no bus from Kampala or Nairobi had arrived at the border, something he said has started taking a toll on local businesses.

Mr Lubega said most customers who buy cereals in Busia town are from Nairobi and that the travel ban means they are no longer going to do business with them until the partial lockdown in the five counties is lifted.

Mr David Kuka, a moneychanger, said very few travellers are arriving at the border, which has adversely affected his business.

Waganda na Warwanda hawawezi kufika Nairobi maana Nairobi ni one of the five isolated counties.
