Hata mkimaliza yenu wao hawataunga yao na yenu. Wao hata hawazungumzii kujenga SGR kuelekea TZ. Nyinyi ndio mnajisumbua kujenga SGR kuelekea Uganda. Wao wanataka kujenga kuja Kenya.

Kuna modern wagon ferriy inasubiri kutajengwa!

The first phase of the line will connect Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.

Tanzania Standard gauge railway Morogoro

TANZANIA has begun testing the electrical systems on the first section of its standard gauge railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, the first electrified line in east Africa, following the construction of a transmission line.

Tanzania plans to commission the 205km Dar es Salaam – Morogoro phase one of the SGR later this year. The €983.3m project, which is being implemented by Yapi Merkez, Turkey, and Mota-Engil, Portugal, was originally due to be completed in 2019 after construction began in April 2017.

“The Dar es Salaam – Morogoro stretch of the modern SGR project is 91% complete,” Tanzanian president, Mr Samia Suluhu, said in a speech to parliament.

Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy has invested €26.9m through the state-owned Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to build a 160km, 220kV transmission line from Kinyerezi, near Dar es Salaam, to Kingorwira, near Morogoro, together with related infrastructure including four traction power substations and 20 transformers. Tanesco will provide 70MW of power via the line. Testing of the electrical systems, which includes implementing measures to remove power supply constraints, is expected to take three months with both a unit test and a component test.

The full €6.1bn, 2561km SGR will run from Dar es Salaam to the shores of Lake Victoria, connecting with Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project is being implemented in five phases, including Morogoro – Makutopora (348km), Makutopora – Tabora (294km), Tabora – Isaka (130km) and Isaka – Mwanza (341km).

The Tanzanian government is yet to say how many locomotives and vehicles will be needed to operate the line, or when they are due to be delivered. Last year, Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) said it had signed a €48.7m deal with a South Korean company to supply the trains.

Passenger services will operate at 160km/h, reducing the Dar-es-salaam – Morogoro travel time to 1h 30min, compared with 4h 30min by bus. Freight services will operate at 120km/h, reducing freight costs by 40%.

Liebherr-Transportation Systems (China) has been selected by the Korean locomotive and railway car builder Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology (RST) to deliver 260 heating-, ventilation- and air conditioning units for vehicles to be operated in Bangladesh and Tanzania. It is the first order for Liebherr-Transportation Systems (China) from a non-Chinese customer, which marks a historic milestone for the company that had just opened in 2020.

The train manufacturer based in Haman-gun Gyeongsangnam-do (in the south of Republic of Korea), ordered HVAC systems for 71 passenger cars that will be operated in Bangladesh and for 59 passenger cars in Tanzania. Two HVAC units are to be installed in each vehicle.

The HVAC systems will be designed, manufactured, tested and serviced by Liebherr Transportation Systems (China). As part of the First Article Inspection phase, the units will undergo various test procedures, for example testing in the state-of-the-art climate test chamber.

Moreover, Liebherr will support Sung Shin RST with a dedicated test set up in Pinghu for the duct system of the cars. The test bench simulates the length of a vehicle, its height, and combines the foreseen duct system with the performance of the HVAC unit in order to support the customer to optimize the duct system if necessary.

South Korean firm to supply SGR trains to Tanzania

Summary

  • The over Sh7 trillion project is being implemented in phases with the first round covering 300km between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.

Dar es Salaam. The start of the modern train services in Tanzania is moving closer after the government signed $60 million (about Sh138 billion) contracts with a South Korean firm to supply trains for the standard gauge railway (SGR).

The government through the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) is constructing a 2,561-kilometer SGR network that links Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Kigoma, Katavi and neighboring countries of Rwanda, Burundi and DRC.

The over Sh7 trillion project is being implemented in phases with the first round covering 300km between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.

TRC director general Mr Masanja Kadogosa said the first phase is completed by about 95 percent so far and that the government had signed contracts for supplying of the electric trains.

“We expect to start testing early next year after getting approval from the transport regulator. So far, we have signed contracts worth $60 million with a South Korean firm to supply the trains,” he said during a tour to the flagship project on Friday.

Mr Kadogosa said there will be some series of contracts but up to now the government had signed the contracts worth $60 million.

“Currently, we are finalising the first phase with some finishing activities in the first piece,” he said.

The tour involved some media representatives and local artistes including musicians, actors and actresses as well as comedians to witness the progress made.

The visitors used a train between Soga and Ruvu in Coast Region to see the railway and witness the modern stations which were being finished.

Mr Kadogosa and the chief government spokesperson, Dr Hassan Abbas,i led the visitors and brief about the project which is expected to simplify transportation of passengers and cargo currently dominated by buses and trucks respectively.

The second phase which is under implementation involves 422km between Morogoro and Makutupora in Singida.

Mr Kadogosa said the government had already paid $534 million for the first phase and $400 million for the second phase while other phases are still under negotiations.

Recently, the government issued a tender for the Isaka-Mwanza route and Mr Kadogosa said the tender may be opened next month.

The SGR project has been one of campaigning platforms for Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) presidential candidate John Magufuli who seeks re-election to finish the projects he started.

Another unfinished big project is the Nyerere hydropower dam which is expected to generate 2,115 megawatts.

However, the opposition criticise him arguing that such development activities are not people-centred.

The railway which will use electricity to move trains will travel at 160km per hour and transport 10,000 tonnes of freight which is equivalent to 500 cargo trucks.

Upon completion, the SGR project is expected to payback the investment value after 15 years from completion.

Mr Kadogosa is optimistic that the project which will also serve neighbouring countries from the port of Dar es Salaam will have return on investment above 18 percent.

The government also planned to have an electronic card that will be used to pay for travel in the SGR trains, Bus Rapid Transit, marine transport as well as shopping in the railway malls to be established.
