Kick-off for the construction of the Central Railway Line​

On April 4th, 2017 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the consulting services contract for the design examination, construction supervision and project management for the construction of the railway line long the Central Railway Line in Tanzania has been signed. SSF is part of multi-national consortium led by Korail, the Korean public railway company.

The kick-off for the construction of the first 205-km-long line section from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro is a milestone in the development of the Tanzanian infrastructure; and Tanzania's president, Mr. John Maguguli, laid the foundation stone in a festive ceremony.

The new railway line is designed as a normal gauge railroad (track widths 1425mm) with a speed of 160 km/h and a capacity of 10,000 tons. The railway runs along the historic central railway line for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city at the Indian Ocean, passes the capital Dodoma before it reaches Mwanza at Lake Victoria. In the future, the planning also comprises 1,200 km of railway branch-offs connection the landlocked countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

Beyond the technological challenges of a project worth billions in a "railroach developing country", the historic background is of great interest. Between 1905 and 1914, under the leadership of the German East African Railway Company, the historic central railway line with a track widths of 1000mm was built. A line which was considered to be the most technologically challenging project of the German colonial era in the-called German East Africa. It is still operated with a speed of around 30 km/h and most parts of it can be used for the transport during the construction of the new railway aligned partially in parallel.

Phase 2 of the standard gauge railway in Tanzania contracted​

SSF provides resident engineer during construction of the second railway line section​

Since May 2017, SSF has been working on phase I of the Central Railway Line in Tanzania within a consortium under the lead of the Korean railway company Korail. The first 202 kilometer long section of the train line connects Dar es Salaam and Morogoro. The scope of services comprises design review, construction management and supervision of the works executed by a Turkish-Portuguese construction consortium.

On February 5th, 2018, the first optional consulting service for the next 336 kilometres of the line between Morogoro and Makutopora were contracted. SSF is substantially involved and, by providing the resident engineer, assumes the management of construction supervision.

We wish the engineers on location a lot of success during their challenging work.
