Hyundai Rotem announced on July 6 that it has won an order for 80 electric trains and 17 electric locomotives worth about 335.4 billion won from Tanzania Railway Corp.

Electric trains are worth 215.7 billion won and electric locomotives 119.7 billion won. They will be delivered to Tanzania by 2024.

The trains will run on a 546-kilometer route linking Dar es Salaam and Makutopora, the first and second stages of a standard track railway project in Tanzania.

The Tanzania government will invest about US$7 billion to build a 1,219-km-long international standard railway with a 1,435 mm-wide track in five stages.

Hyundai Rotem won a $296.5 million electric train deal from Tanzania as the South Korean railway system maker aims to expand business in Africa.

Hyundai Rotem, whose top shareholder is Hyundai Motor Co., said it will deliver 80 electric multiple units and 17 electric locomotives by 2024 to Tanzania Railway Corp. (TRC), according to a company statement on July 6. The trains will run on a 546 km-route connecting Dar es Salam and Makutopora, the first and second stages of the standard gauge railway project under construction in Tanzania. It is the first electric-powered eco-friendly train in the country where only diesel trains are used.

Tanzania is developing railway infrastructure with $7 billion investment to build 1,219 km of international standard track with width of 1,435 mm over five stages.

Trains in the country can run at only 30-40 km per hour as many of tracks are narrower than the global standard. Once the project is completed, the speed will improve to up to 160 km a hour, enhancing traffic convenience and cargo transportation.

Hyundai Rotem aims to preoccupy the country’s market with the deal and win more orders since the project will be carried out in five stages.

“With the high-quality train delivery, we will do utmost to secure more deals,” said a company official.

Hyundai Rotem has been active in Africa. Last month, it won a deal to upgrade a railway signal system in Egypt. It also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in April with the Egyptian government on sale of 840 electric multiple units.

South Korea’s railway system maker Hyundai Rotem Co. has struck a $295.65 million deal to supply eco-friendly train cars in Tanzania’s railway infrastructure project.

According to its regulatory filing on Tuesday, Hyundai Rotem has been awarded contracts worth a combined $295.65 million from Tanzania Railways Corporation to supply 80 train cars worth $190.12 million and 17 electric locomotives worth $105.53 million.

Hyundai Rotem’s electric trains, which are set to be delivered by 2024, will be deployed on a 546-kilometer (339 miles) high-speed electric line running between Dar es Salaam and Makutupora in Tanzania as part of the country’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line project. They will be the first eco-friendly electric train vehicles to operate in Tanzania.

The project is the Korean locomotive maker’s first in the African country.

All 97 trains can carry about 590 passengers and run at a maximum of 160 kilometers per hour, much faster than the diesel trains currently running in the country at 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. The vehicles will also feature seats for easy wheelchair access as well as nursing rooms.

The Tanzanian government has invested a total $7 billion in the SGR project to construct a railway stretching for 1,219 kilometers connecting Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, the two largest cities of the country, with a standard track gauge of 1,435 millimeters. The project is aimed at modernizing the country’s rail infrastructure, thereby significantly increasing the passenger and freight transportation volume.

Hyundai Rotem explained that its excellent business management capabilities, stable delivery and superior performance of its products that have been proven in projects for other African countries including Egypt, Tunisia and Nigeria, helped it to win the orders. The contracts will serve as a foothold for the company to win additional orders for the SGR and other rail infrastructure projects in Tanzania, it explained.

Shares of Hyundai Rotem finished Tuesday down 2.21 percent at 24,300 won ($21.51) in Seoul.
