Chinese-built modern railway in Kenya celebrates 1,500 days of safe operation

The Chinese-built standard-gauge railway (SGR) linking Kenya's port city Mombasa to its capital Nairobi witnessed 1,500 days of safe operation on Friday, a milestone marking the achievements of joint development between China and African countries via the Belt and Road Initiative.

A statement from the SGR operator released in Nairobi on Friday said the modern train service has been at the forefront of Kenya's socio-economic transformation in the last four years since its operationalization, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.

"SGR's transportation indicators and its increasingly important social significance have also earned the approval of freight owners and passengers," said Africa Star Railway Operation Company Limited (AfriStar) that operates the SGR.

The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway connects Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and Mombasa, the largest port in East Africa, with a total length of about 480 kilometers. It is a modern railway constructed with Chinese standards, Chinese technology, and Chinese equipment.

According to AfriStar, the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is also boosting Kenya's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by ensuring that delivery of critical supplies is not interrupted.

A total of 5,415,000 passengers have been ferried between Nairobi and Mombasa in the last 1,500 days since the SGR commenced operations and the operator estimates 1.8 million commuters could use the service this year, according to Xinhua.

The operator said 1,500 days marked safe, efficient, and quality operation of both the SGR passenger and cargo service. But the operator still considers enhancing safety as the key work of the railway operation.

Staff members have been trained to ensure risk to the passenger and cargo is mitigated to the lowest level possible.

"Through case education on railway accidents in China and other countries, staff safety awareness and quality are greatly enhanced," said the operator.

According to AfriStar, the staff has been trained to boost the safety of equipment and enforce environmental protection measures along the SGR corridor that include pristine wildlife sanctuaries.

The operator has developed guidelines to boost the safety of railway operations and in 2020 alone spent $2.8 million to improve public security through the acquisition of cutting-edge technology and hiring of personnel.

The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR, which replaced the meter-gauge railway that was constructed more than 100 years ago during British colonial rule, has been an important product that came out of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in late 2015.

The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is the first step in the grand plan to build an East Africa railway network that will eventually link Kenya with Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.

You talk like a layman, the passengers number is determined by the the length of trains multiplied by the number of trips they make, most of electric trains do around 300 passengers per one way while Diesel trains can do up to 1,440 per one way like the one in Kenya. So tell me, which train will do more passengers at the end of the year? Like for the case of Kenya, the trains do 8,000 passengers per day.
I'm sorry to inform you that your SGR is designed to carry 1,100,000 passengers per year compared to Kenya's which is doing 3,000,000 passengers per year.
 

Hyundai Contracted To Deliver SGR Project To Benefit Tanzania, Rwanda​

A South Korea-based company, Hyundai Rotem has secured contracts worth $295.65m from Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) to deliver eco-friendly train cars.

TRC will receive 80 train cars worth $190.12m and 17 electric locomotives worth $105.53m from Hyundai Rotem, which are expected to be delivered by 2024.

As part of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line project which will connect to Rwanda, the new train cars will operate on a 546km high-speed electric line spanning between Dar es Salaam and Makutupora.

Tanzania has invested around $7bn in the SGR project and expected to work on a 673km range which will connect Makutupora, Tabora, Isaka and Mwanza

The SGR project is a regional project which is also expected to connect Rwanda, Burundi and DR Congo to boost regional trade and business amongst the member states.

Rwanda is still waiting for the project to reach Isaka (dry port) side to kick start its construction activities that will connect the Rwandan capital Kigali, a move in which government in June 2021 reassured Tanzania of speedy execution of the projects.

Sources within the ministry of infrastructure indicate that the SGR project is still under discussion on investments needed but Rwanda is expected to invest more than $1.3billion to connect 521km from Isaka to Kigali.

Hyundai Rotem is an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, which has Hyundai Motor and Kia under its business control.

So will that stop Rwanda from joining their electrical SGR at Isaka from Kigali? BTW the report says the electric trains (80 trainscars and 17 locomotives) will be delivered "by 2024"! That means there will be caoming in phases before 2024 while the last delivery will be by 2024!

Funds for 65 wagons ready, rides to start in December

THE government has allocated 11.3bn/- this financial year for procurement of 65 Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) wagons with rides and operations set for December.

Addressing reporters yesterday when launching the second meeting of the new board of directors of the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC), the Minister for Works and Transport, Dr Leonard Chamuriho said that the target was to ensure that operations start once construction works are completed.

“I direct the new board and management to get prepared for the long awaited rapid train which comes with new technology,” he said.

“Ensure that your preparations involve training of drivers, technicians and other cadres including signals to enable them to cope with new technology,” he stated.

The new SGR wagons will arrive late November instead of next month due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he said, noting that the government had also set aside 29.4bn/- to remanufacture five locomotives for the main way and 7.9bn/- for five shunting locomotives. Around 7.5bn/- has been allocated for renovating 37 coaches and 600 cargo wagons, he elaborated.

The government also plans to procure 100 wagons worth over 18.8bn/- to be used in the old rail (meter gauge rail), with spare parts for three locomotives worth 3bn/-, wagons and machine worth about 6.5bn/-respectively, he said.


Construction of the SGR goes concurrently with renovating the meter gauge railway to improve its carriage capacity, he pointed out.

For his part, the TRC board chairman Prof John Kondoro appealed to the government to inject more funds for supervising, monitoring and evaluation exercises.

He said TRC experts were still renovating the Dar es Salaam/Moshi/Arusha route to improve the capacity of the track.

Managing Director Masanja Kadogosa said that already technicians are undergoing training to run the new trains when the construction of the SGR is over.

Three years ago, the government said that it would dispatch a team of 167 railway personnel to five countries abroad to undergo training in the operation of the rapid train to run on the standard gauge railway (SGR).

The local experts, whose fields range from engineering to operators, were expected to be trained in South Korea, Ethiopia, China, Turkey and India, with the government signing agreements with the five countries.

“We have selected a team of experts in communication, logistics, technicians, civil engineers and electrical field plus locomotive operators,” he said, with intent to ensure that local experts were fully equipped and trained to operate the rapid train.

The SGR project lwas launched by the late president John Magufuli early in his tenure, being undertaken by theTurkish firm Yapi Merkez, teaming up with Portuguese operators, Mota-Engil. It is expected to link the port of Dar es Salaam with Mwanza, Kigoma and neighbouring Rwanda and Burundi.

In order to increase carrying capacity for each slot and to relief pressure from Mombasa port, from 1 July 2021 onwards the SGR began operating 75-car 150 TEU extra long freight trains. Each extra long train has 1.4 times the carrying capacity of normal trains.

In order to minimize the impact on passenger service and satisfy the non-stop requirement of the extra long trains, these trains are dispatched daily from Port Retiz Station at 3:30 am and arrives at Nairobi ICD at 12:30 pm. Up to the date of this writing, thirteen sets of extra long freight trains have already operated safely since 1 July.
