Government to showcase national strategic projects at EXPO 2020

THE government is to showcase national strategic projects at the EXPO 2020 Dubai in effort to help attract more investors into development sectors like agriculture and industry, Industry and Trade minister, Prof Kitila Mkumbo has said.

He noted that while the theme for the expo is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future", Tanzania is participating in the mobility area with a sub-theme " Connectivity, Tanzania Ready for Takeoff," which explains the government commitment to establish infrastructural projects connecting Africa and the rest of the world.

Addressing a press conference here at the weekend, the minister explained that during meeting, Tanzania will explain to the world strategic projects like the Julius Nyerere Hydro-Power Project (JNHPP), the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), and expansion of Dar es Salaam port, construction of more airports and strengthening of air transport.

He said these are some of the key projects that attracts and catalyse business and investments, especially in agriculture and industry sectors.

“As a nation we expect to utilize this great opportunity to let the word know what we have in Tanzania in effort to get sustainable market for local produce" said the minister, adding that focus is on products strategic crops like coffee, cashewnuts, tea, sisal, among others that suit world market.

He said the Expo Dubai 2020 started on 1st October, 2021 and runs until 31st March, 2021, whereby Tanzania like other participating countries will have its national days at the meeting on 26 and 27 February, 2022.

Prof Mkumbo explained that the expo was to be held last year but was pushed forward die to COVID-19 pandemic that engulfed the world.

He said the exhibitions organized by the Bureau of International Exhibition(BIE) with 195 member states is held after every five years with different themes aimed at promoting economic and social matters among the countries.

The money minister added that the government's participation at the exhibitions is coordinated by the ministry of Industry and Trade in collaboration with ministry of Trade and Industrial Development in Zanzibar through Tan Trade.

He noted that the Expo Dubai 2020 theme of " Connecting Minds, Creating the Future", aims at bring together all countries in the world to find solutions to challenges in the trade, agriculture, energy, mineral, transport, industry, technology, tourism , education , health and social sectors .

Prof Mkumbo urged the private sector and the business fraternity to make good use of opportunities availed by the expo and participates through various available programs, adding that it has a lot of benefits including ability to get capital for big projects as well as investment partners.

The minister was of the view that the exhibitions will open opportunity for local companies to advertise their products to the world and get international markets. “Through the expo, we shall be able to attract more tourists who will in turn learn about tradition and customs’ he stated, adding that these will help strengthen trade, economic and social ties between local private sectors and their global counterparts.

Tan Trade director general, Latifah Jamis Mohamed, while speaking at the event noted that this is the fifth time Tanzania is participating at the Expo.

THE country’s mega infrastructure projects are being showcased at Dubai Expo 2020 to lure foreign investors come to destination Tanzania which promises windfall profits.

Construction work of the SGR going on between Dar es Salaam and Makutupola in Dodoma will be a subject of display at Dubai Expo 2020 according to TanTrade.

Acting Director of Trade Promotion at Tanzania Trade development Authority, Getrude Ng’weshemi said in Dar es Salaam mid this week that they deliberately decided to participate under the mobility category to lure investors to the country.

“We have opted to participate via the mobility category under our national them ‘Connectivity, Tanzania ready for takeoff’ to attract new investments by showcasing ongoing mega projects such as the standard gauge railway (SGR), Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Project, expansion of Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar ports to potential investors at the global fair,” Ng’weshemi said.

Briefing journalists and editors allied to Tanzania Editors’ Forum, the TanTrade Director further said that the Dubai Expo exhibition organized by Bureau of International Expositions and being hosted by the government of United Arab Emirates, also involves two different categories of opportunity and sustainability.

According to her, about 600 participants from the country’s public and private sector will take part in the expo that brings 207,600 participants from 191 countries of the world. A whopping 16 delegations will visit the expo from Tanzania between this month and March 31 next year.

The country’s pavilion will be divided into four zones namely: fly which portrays cities, shores, mountains and natural resources found in Tanzania. The second zone is named walk and shows museums and historical sites, the Kilwa mosque, former leaders’ history and the freedom fighter monument.

At the ride zone, there will be visually national parks and lakes while the forth zone named drive will showcase different samples of agricultural products and the ongoing mega projects. “At the Dubai Expo, we will have a special day to showcase what we intend the world to see and will be held on 26th of February 2022,” she said.

Commenting on the subject, TanTrade Director General, Latifa Khamis said about 700m/- has been used in Tanzania’s preparation for the expo. “From our preparations and how we have organized ourselves, we are expecting to attract at least 80 percent of participants to come and explore investment opportunities in Tanzania,” Khamis said.

In a vote of thanks, TEF Chairman, Deodatus Balile urged media houses to give the country’s delegation enough coverage so that the public should know what’s going on. “We must let the world understand what Tanzania has in terms of investment opportunities,” Balile said.
