For his part, the Minister of Transport and Public Works of the United Republic of Tanzania, Makame Mbarawa said:
“The 2085 kilometer long Dar es Salaam – Kindu railway line will allow travel at 160 kilometers per hour for passenger trains and 120 kilometers per hour for cargo trains. In 15 hours or 16 hours time, the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania will be connected to the city of Kindu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are committed to the joint construction of this railway. The first phase will consist of the feasibility study of the Gitega (Burundi) section to the DRC. A single company will be in charge after agreement between the DRC, Burundi and Tanzania. This is a good thing as the railway track constructed will be standard and of best quality. On the Tanzanian side, work on the 5th batch is going well and soon the 6th batch between Kigoma and Uvinza will be undertaken. From Uvinza to Musongati, this route is crucial because it is the one that will go to Gitega and as far as Kindu in the DRC.We express immense joy because the meeting was fruitful and friendly. The work will proceed expeditiously so that exchanges between our 3 countries are fluid. »
