Men and women generally agree, garlic on the breath isn't pleasant. But according to a new study, men who eat garlic actually smell more pleasant and attractive to the opposite sex—not their breath, but their body odor. And if that finding isn’t counter-intuitive enough, it’s made all the stranger by the fact that only men in the study who consumed a lot of garlic—the equivalent of four bulbs a day—enjoyed the effect.

The study had three phases in which the amount and type (bulbs or capsules) of garlic given to 42 male participants were varied. The researchers collected their body odor with pads worn for 12 hours, which were subsequently sniffed by 82 women who rated their pleasantness, attractiveness and intensity.

In the first phase, the men ate 6 grams of garlic (about two cloves worth) with bread and cheese. The women who sniffed their pads didn’t rate their odor any differently than they rated the odor of men who ate only bread and cheese. In the next phase researchers doubled the amount to 12 grams, or four cloves. In this case the women judged the odor as significantly more pleasant, attractive and less intense than the non-garlic odor. In the final phase the men consumed 12 grams in capsules and the women again rated their odor as more attractive and less intense.
The results suggest that something about garlic in body odor is attractive to the opposite sex, but what and why? While the study doesn’t provide solid answers, the researchers speculate that the health-boosting benefits of eating garlic may be discernable in body odor, producing an olfactory marker of good health for the opposite sex to home in on.

According to study co-author Craig Roberts, Professor of Psychology at the University of Stirling, UK, “From an evolutionary perspective, formation of preferences for diet-associated body odors was possibly shaped by means of sexual selection. Previous research indicates that many animal species use diet-associated cues to select mates in good physical condition.”

Again, this is speculative, but there’s decent evidence linking garlic to a few notable health boosts, and it’s conceivable that one or more of them could be identifiable in human sweat.

Roberts adds, “As the health benefits of garlic consumption include antioxidant, immunostimulant, cardiovascular, bactericidal and anti-cancer effects, it is plausible that human odor preferences have been shaped by sexual selection.”

Or it’s possible that once garlic is digested, it simply produces a chemical reaction evidenced in male sweat that is, for whatever reason, appealing to women. At least some women.

Either way, the results are intriguing and eating more garlic from a health standpoint isn't a bad idea, side benefits notwithstanding.

Kitunguu swaumu ni jamii ya vitunguu ambayo kwa kitaalamu huitwa Allium sativum. Jamii hii ilianza kutumika katika mabara mbalimbali duniani hususani Asia, Afrika na Ulaya takribani miaka 6000 iliyopita. Matumizi makuu nyakati hizo yakiwa viungo katika mboga na tiba.

Kitunguu swaumu kimetajwa kwenye vitabu mbalimbali vya dini vikielezea faida zake katika kutibu maradhi mbalimbali yasababishwayo na bakteria, matatizo katika mapafu, matatizo katika mfumo wa umen’genyaji chakula, na matatizo ya kuishiwa nguvu.

Historia inaonesha kuwa, vitunguu swaumu vilianza kutumika China mwaka 510 K.K na pia vilitumiwa na wanajeshi wa Ugiriki na Roma. Aidha wasafiri wa vyombo vya baharini na vijijini pamoja na wakulima barani Afrika walivitumia sana.

Mwaka 1858, mtafiti na mwanasayansi wa nyakati hizo, Louis Pasteur aligundua uwezo wa kitunguu swaumu katika kuua vimelea mbalimbali vinavyosababisha magonjwa, na hivyo vikaanza kutumika kama dawa ya kusafishia vidonda na kuzuia kidonda ndugu hasa zama za vita ya kwanza na pili ya dunia. Isitoshe, mpaka sasa zipo dawa kadhaa zilizotengenewa kwa kutumia jamii hii ya vitunguu swaumu ikiwemo dawa ya kusafisha mdomo (mouth wash).

Huko sokoni tayari nimeviona vitunguu swaumu kutoka China na Afrika kusini ambavyo vyenyewe huwa vina punje kubwa nene na huwa rahisi kuvimenya, hata hivyo ili upate faida hizi zote hapa chini naendelea kukushauri utumie vitunguu swaumu vyetu vinavyolimwa hapa Tanzania kwani hivyo vya kutoka nje pamoja na kuwa ni rahisi kuvimenya lakini ubora wake si kama ule wa vitunguu vyetu.

Hakikisha kila mboga unayopika haikosi kitunguu swaumu ndani yake na ikibidi ukiweke mwishoni mwishoni unapokaribia kuipuwa mboga yako toka katika moto kwamba kisiive sana hata kupoteza viinilishe vyake. Kama una friza au friji ya kawaida unaweza kumenya vitunguu swaumu hata kilo nzima na kuvitwanga kidogo katika kinu, vifunge vizuri katika bakuli au mfuko wa plastiki na uvihifadhi katika friza au friji na hivyo kila unapopika unachukuwa tu na kukitumia ili kuepuka usumbufu wa kukimenya kila siku.

Lakini ili upate faida zaidi za kitunguu swaumu utatakiwa ukimeze katika maji kikiwa kibichi, yaani bila kupitishwa katika moto au kuwa kimepikwa.

Sifa kuu zinazokifanya kitunguu swaumu kuwa na uwezo na faida zilizoainishwa hapo juu ni kule kuwa kwake na viasili kadhaa (ingredients) ambavyo vinafanya kazi tofauti tofauti. Uwezo wake wa kiutendaji unatokana na mambo yafuatayo;

Vina uwezo wa kusababisha kutanuka kwa mishipa ya damu (vasodilation) kwa kubadilisha polysulfides zilizopo ndani yake kuwa hydrogen sulfides kwenye seli nyekundu za damu.

Husaidia uthibiti wa kiwango cha sukari mwilini kwa kushusha kiwango cha kemikali ya homocystine na kupunguza madhara ya kisukari.
Iwapo vitapondwa pondwa vizuri, vitunguu swaumu hutoa kemikali iitwayo Allicin ambayo ni dawa dhidi ya bateria, na phytoncide ambayo huua fangasi wa aina mbalimbali.

Harufu mbaya ya kitunguuu swaumu hutokana na gesi aina ya hydrogen sulfide ambayo hutolewa baada ya kuvila.

Nini madhara ya vitunguu swaumu?
Ukiacha faida zake, vitunguu swaumu pia vina hasara na madhara mbalimbali kwa mtumiaji. Madhara hayo ni pamoja na;

· Harufu mbaya mdomoni ambayo hutokana na kemikali ya AMS (allyl methyl sulfide). Harufu mbaya hii, hata hivyo, yaweza kupunguzwa kwa kunywa maziwa au kunywa maji mengi.

· Kwa baadhi ya watumiaji, vinaweza kuwaletea mzio au mcharuko mwili (allergies au inflammatory reactions)

· Kichefuchefu, Kutapika na kuharisha.

· Huweza kusababisha hatari ya kuvuja damu, kwa sababu huzuia kazi ya seli sahani (platelets) zenye kusaidia kuganda kwa damu kushindwa kufanya kazi yake vizuri, na hususani kwa mama wajawazito, baada ya upasuaji au mara baada ya kujifungua.

· Huingiliana katika utendaji kazi wake na dawa kadhaa kama vile warfarin, antiplatelets, saquinavir, dawa za shinikizo la damu kwa ujumla hasa calcium channel blockers, na antibiotiki za jamii ya quinolone kama vile ciproflaxacillin.

· Aidha, vinaelezwa pia kuwa na madhara kwa wanyama jamii ya paka na mbwa.
