Arsenal, and because Arsene Wenger hides all of the club's money under his mattress, the contract talks are very complicated, and there is a real possibility Özil will be leaving the Gunners either because he won't get a new deal or because he won't get a trophy at Arsenal. Or both.
So naturally when you have a great player possibly leaving his current club, the papers will link that player to Barcelona. Barcelona have a lot of money to sign big players, Barcelona is a club of great midfielders who can pass the ball, and writing stupid
transfer rumors about Barcelona sells boatloads of newspapers.

SPORT is reporting that according to their sources (!!!!!!!), Barça "executives" have contacted Özil's agents to monitor his contract situation. The "executives" believe that Özil wants to return to Spain (he played for
Real Madrid, if you didn't know) after a few years in the Premier League, and he wants to join the
Blaugrana to have a chance to win a Champions League trophy in his prime.
Sure, Özil is great. Sure, he looks like a nice addition and we can definitely afford his transfer fee and the contract Wenger won't offer him. But we just don't need him right now. André Gomes,
Denis Suarez and Rafinha Alcântara will only get better and Andrés Iniesta can still produce magic for a good number of years. By the time we actually need Özil, he'll be past his prime. AND WE DON'T NEED HIM.
