FC Barcelona were proclaimed Champion of the Spanish Super Cup after beating Real Madrid 3-2 at the Camp Nou, and 5-4 overall over the 2 legs. Iniesta and Messi (2), with a goal right at the death, were the home team scorers.
The Spanish Super Cup already has an owner. It's FC Barcelona, who managed to defend their crown after a long night of football; the game finished some time after 01.00. Just like the first leg, the game was end-to-end, played at top speed and with two opposing styles: the touch and elegance of Barcelona against the rough and physical Madrid. One star outshone the rest: Leo Messi, the best player in the world, who made the first goal for Barça and scored the other 2, the last one after 87 minutes when the tie seemed destined for extra time. Earlier, Real Madrid had twice equalized with goals from Ronaldo and Benzema.

The game had a dream end: Cesc made his debut and played a vital part in the goal that made it 3-2. The Super Cup is staying in Barcelona!

Messi assist, Iniesta definition

As in the first leg, Madrid pressurized Barça from the very beginning, and very high up the pitch, making it difficult to move the ball out of defence, and forcing the defenders to play the long ball. Much of the game was being played in the Barça half, although Madrid were creating very few chances. In their first long and quick combination, Barça went 1-0 ahead, when Messi and Iniesta changed roles. Leo got away from Khedira and Coentrao, and put a perfect through ball to Iniesta, who calmly chipped Casillas. A fabulous goal.

Madrid response

Madrid had no other option but to play higher up the field. After 15 minutes they needed two goals to overturn the tie. Madrid benefited from the intensity of the game and long balls into the area, and hardly played in the centre of the pitch. However, they almost scored an equalizer through Benzema, but his execution was poor. However, from the resultant corner, Ronaldo scored after some messy play in Valdés's area.

Pique and Messy fantasies make it 2-1

The game didn't lack goals. There was no respite, and before the break, there was time for a very powerful shot from Ronaldo that Valdes diverted onto the crossbar. The goal tio make it 2-1, scored by Messi, just like the Madrid goal, came from a corner. Leo benefited from a fantastic back-heel by Pique, and with all the calm in the World, chipped the ball over Casillas. Just like in the first leg, Messi dealt a lethal blow to Madrid's morale just before half time.

The game heats up

After the break, tempers began to heat up. Cristiano Ronaldo and Mascherano saw yellow after a scuffle following a foul by Marcelo, on the pitch from the start of the second half. Later, Pepe crudely blocked Messi, incensing the Camp Nou crowd. In this situation, chances were scarce until Messi tested Casillas after a touch of genius from Iniesta, who invented a new dribble with his back to goal. As an answer to this Ramos saw a header go just wide of the far post. Both sides were giving everything, despite the intense heat.

Benzema equaliser

Getting close to the 90 minutes Mourinho was forced to throw his most attacking players, Higuain and Kaka, into the fray, replacing Di Maria and Özil, and Madrid managed to equalize again, once more with a bit of luck on their side, following a corner, just like for the first goal. Benzema was the scorer this time, and tied up the game once more.

Fantastic Messi

It really looked like the match was going into extra time at the Camp Nou, which witnessed the debut of Fabregas, Barça's brand new signing. However, with Messi on the pitch, anything is possible. Messi, Fabregas, and Adriano, another who came on late in the second half, teamed up for one of the last moves of the match, to decide which team would be Champion. A fabulous volley by Messi, from the Adriano cross, won the match for Barça, who chose to play football again. The game ended in a similar fashion as the 5-0, with an impotent Madrid, with only ten players on the field after a brutal foul by Marcelo on Cesc. Villa was also sent off in the brawl that followed. In the end, nastiness aside, football was the winner.

With this win, Barça have begun the season how they finished the previous one, with a trophy. It's the eleventh in the Guardiola era, and he's lifted the Spanish Super Cup 3 years running.

The Barça number 4, along with Alexis Sanchez, won his first title with Barça when he's only been with the team for 3 days.

Cesc Fabregas couldn't have had a better debut. He came onto the pitch in the 82nd minute, just after Benzema had equalised the score at 2-2. But his coming on revolutionised the fans, and the team. A short while later, in precisely the 88th minute, Messi scored the winning goal. The goal that won the Super Cup.

2011-08-17_PARTIDO_53.JPG
For Cesc it was more than a goal. The goal that won a new title for Barça, and a trophy that is Fabregas's first with Barça. Coming to Barça and molding into the team. 3 days with Barça and a trophy already. And in nine days, a European Super Cup on the horizon, which could be his second title.

Fabregas was also the object of a nasty foul by Marcelo, who received a straight red card. In his first match Cesc tasted the glory of the title and what it's like to be on the receiving end of a bad foul, which luckily, had no consequences. When in the 98th minute the referee whistled the end of the match, Cesc exploded with joy and embraced his teammates to celebrate his third title on a personal level.

The Barça number 4 hopes it's the first of many. Barça hope that Cesc will be an important asset in the pursuit of new titles. As for Guardiola, he's already essential. "In 10 minutes we saw enough to know how Cesc is," the first team manager said, and he also stressed that Fabregas "gets inside like almost no other player".

Alexis Sanchez as well

Alexis, despite not playing in the second leg, played all ninety minutes in the first leg, and also contributed to the Barça triumph. The new Barça number 9 also won his first title since he joined the club in July.

Barça crushed Villareal with an exhibition of football, and made it clear that this season they've come back even hungrier. Three of the four new players, Thiago, Cesc, and Alexis, scored in the game, and Messi scored twice.
Both teams play neat football, but Barça is at a different level. Pressure, intensity, possession, and instinct make all the difference, and this Monday Barça had it all. The 5-0 win against a team in the Champions League just demonstrated the ambition of these players who never have enough. Sanchez and Cesc scored, Messi scored twice, and a sublime Thiago Alcantara got the other.

Audacity from the start

Starting with a 3 man defence of Sergio, Abidal, and Mascherano, Barça made their intentions clear from the start. They wanted to have the ball from the kick-off and were totally successful in their aim. With a midfield full of ball-players, Thiago, Cesc, and Iniesta, and one defensive pivot, Keita, Guardiola's side went for everything from the first minute. They controlled the game, and created the better chances, although at times the final pass went astray.
Thiago, who helped in defense, covering the right hand side, also got forward a lot. Proof of this was the first goal. A fabulous Thiago run high up the field brought the goal. Thiago went alone and, spurred on by the fans, got to the edge of the area, and with a low cross-shot beat Diego Lopez, to make it 1-0, in the 25th minute.

A lethal Fabregas

In his debut in the League with Barça, and at the Camp Nou, Cesc showed all his qualities, from helping out in defence, to getting into the box, without forgetting the combinations with his teammates. From one of these combinations, in the 44th minute, he made it 2-0. Messi, well inside the Villareal half, spotted Cesc's run, and hit a superb through ball, that Fabregas took in his stride, rounded Diego Lopez, and slid the ball into the net.

Total domination

In the second half the story was the same. Same script, same actors, but 2 of the forwards hadn't scored yet .The goal to make it 3-0, right at the start of the second half, fell to the Chilean, Alexis Sanchez, making his debut at the Camp Nou, who hit a low drive into the back of the net after a fantastic pass from Thiago. The striker from Tocopilla now knows what it's like to score in the Camp Nou.

The fourth goal came from the best player in the world. Iniesta hit a brilliant pass into space, and Messi rounded Diego Lopez, to make it 4-0. The goal was Messi's 100th in the Camp Nou, a truly amazing statistic.

The icing on the cake

Four goals ahead, Barca took their foot off the gas a bit, but not much. Pep took the opportunity to make three changes, and on came Xavi, Villa, and Dos Santos, but there was time to marvel once again with a fifth goal. Again, a superbly timed pass from Thiago, two assists and a goal in the game, reached Messi in the 6 yard box, who slotted the ball past the keeper to make it 5-0, in the 74th minute.

Then, in the last fifteen minutes, Barça stayed faithful to their style of play. Playing one and two touch football they had Villarreal chasing shadows, just like they had over the 90 minutes. A fabulous start to the season against a rival who are playing in the Champions League.

[h=4]It's time to think about Milan[/h] FCBarcelona.cat
Barça trained this morning with their minds on Tuesday's match against Milan, in the Champions League. 4 B Team players joined the group.

Following the 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad, the team got up early on Sunday to carry out some recovery work, and to start thinking about Milan. The players who started against Real Sociedad did some recovery work. 4 B Team players, Oriol Rosell, Lobato, Gustavo, and Masip, who weren't called up by Eusebio to face Deportivo this Sunday evening (20.00), joined the session.

Congratulations to Abidal

2011-09-11_ENTRENO_27.JPG
The session began with the players forming a circle on pitch number 2 of the training ground, taking the opportunity to congratulate Eric Abidal on the day of his 32nd birthday. The Champions League ball was used in the training session.

Barça will train again on Monday from 19.15 hours, at the Camp Nou. Before training one of the players will appear at a press conference, followed by Pep Guardiola.

[h=4]Messi could make his debut against Milan[/h] Sandra Sarmiento
The Argentine striker hasn't played any official match against AC Milan. He was on the bench in 2004/05 and the following year in the semifinals of the Champions League he was injured.
2011-08-17_FCB_-_REAL_MADRID_002.jpg
It was 7 years ago when Leo Messi made his debut in the Champions League. It seems a long time since that game in Donetsk in December 2004, when people began to think that Messi might become a wonderful player. 57 games later in the top European club competition, he's scored 37 goals and has 3 Champions League winners medals.

Messi has played against the best teams in Europe: Manchester, Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern, Inter, Madrid, but of the last 8 champions, he still hasn't played against one of world football's historic teams, the second team with more European Cups: Milan.

Minutes in the Gamper

2010-08-25_FCB_-_MILAN_033.jpg
The only time that Messi has played against Milan was not an official match, but was in the Joan Gamper Trophy last year and he played the second half, as team captain. On that day Barça beat the Italian club on penalties, with an outstanding performance from José Manuel Pinto.

Didn't play in the last two games

In the 2004/05 season, in the group stage, Messi was on the bench, and saw how Ronaldinho invented one of the best goals in the recent history of the Champions League, in the fourth round of the group stage. At that time Messi had not yet made his debut in the Europe championships.

One year later, with Messi becoming one of the great promises of world football, he missed the semifinals of the Champions League, due to a muscle injury that he picked up in the second round against Chelsea.

Top goalscorer in recent editions

If Guardiola deems fit, Messi will play against AC Milan, rested after being on the bench against Real Sociedad, and motivated by the new challenge in the Champions League. The Argentinian has been top scorer in the last 3 editions of the competition. On 2008/09 he scored 9 goals; 8 goals in 2009/10, and 12 goals in 2010/2012. There are no impossible challenges for the best player on the planet.

[h=4]Cruel start (2-2)[/h] Roger Bogunyà
Barça have started their European title defence with a bittersweet draw with the Italian champions. Pedro and Villa neutralised Pato's shock opener after 25 seconds, but when Barça looked assured of a 2-1 win, Silva headed an injury time equaliser.
What we saw at the Camp Nou tonight was evidence that the best team doesn't always win. The 2-2 draw between Barça and AC Milan was a fine example of how what can happen in 88 minutes is not always enough to win a game. The Catalans suffered defeat to an Italian side that scored within seconds of the kickoff and then again just before the final whistle. In between, FC Barcelona were the vastly superior team, with Messi outstanding and Pedro and Villa getting a goal each, but none of that was enough to get their Champions League campaign off to a winning start.

The two dropped points were not the only negative news for Barça fans to digest, for Iniesta will be out through injury for four weeks. But Barça have overcome much greater difficulties in the past, and their European challenge is still very much alive.

Pato the early bird

It only took 25 seconds for Pato to score the fourth fastest goal in UCL history, losing his marker brilliantly and slotting the ball through Valdés' legs. The Camp Nou was stunned. Barça hadn't even touched the ball and they were already playing catch-up. It was going to be an upward struggle, and against an AC Milan side that defends exquisitely, but Barça didn't panic and patiently created a series of chances that visiting keeper Abbiati did well to deal with.

Messi amazing

The Argentinian was causing the most problems for the Milan stopper, and having already hit the post from a free kick, on the half hour he combined skill and speed to leave rossoneri defenders Nesta and Abate standing before laying the ball on a plate for Pedro, who wasn't going to make the same mistake that he made at Anoeta and made it 1-1.

The half ended with two players being replaced due to injury. For AC Milan, Boateng made way for Ambrosini, while for Barcelona, Iniesta was replaced by Cesc after picking up an unfortunate injury while sprinting down the left wing.

Villa scorcher

Barça stepped things up a gear after the break, and were soon celebrating their second. Villa placed the ball for a long-range free kick and then sent an absolute humdinger of a shot past Abbiati, the ideal way to make up for his error that led to Barça conceding an unexpected second goal at Anoeta on Saturday.

Puyol and Afellay back

Villa's goal did little to awaken any new ambitions among AC Milan's veteran set of players. Despite creating the occasional danger on the counter attack in the first half, the Italians found the Barça possession game far more difficult to deal with now that it was them who needed to score. It looked like Barcelona's first Champions League game of the season was going to end with three thoroughly deserved points, and as well as the result, the fans were also able to celebrate the returns of Puyol and Afellay from long injuries.

Thiago Silva delivers late blow

But against Italian teams, and especially AC Milan, it is never a good idea to celebrate until victory really is certain, and despite the lack of chances they were creating, there was always the danger that they might sneak a late equaliser. And following an injury time corner, for which Puyol was booked for protesting, Thiago Silva rose to beat the Barça defence and head home a last gasp leveller. The game ended as it had begun, and despite playing the best football for the 88 minutes in between, Barça came out of this with the same reward as their Italian guests: one point that really should have been three.

An exquisite performance saw Barça put eight past Osasuna-five in the first half- at the Camp Nou tonight, with strikes from Messi (3), Villa (2), Cesc, Xavi and an own goal from Roversio.
Following their last two drawn games against Real Sociedad and AC Milan, Barça were again back to their imperious selves against Osasuna at the Camp Nou tonight. A fantastic first half which saw them playing at great pace, holding onto the ball and seemingly creating chances at will as they scored five goals to set up the win. They didn't let up after the break either, scoring three more and leaving the scoreline to say it all : 8-0.

Surprises in the line up

Guardiola surprised Osasuna with a 3-4-3 formation, using Mascherano, Puyol (making a welcome return to the starting 11) and Abidal at the back behind a midfield diamond of Busquets, Xavi, Thiago and Cesc, with Villa, Messi and Alves (playing as a right winger) as the front three and it couldn't have started better, as after just 4 minutes, Busquets found Alves out on the right with an inch perfect pass and the Brazilian crossed for Messi at the far post to open the scoring.

Barça just looked unstoppable and within the first quarter of an hour Cesc had doubled their lead with a lovely left footed volley after being put in by Messi.

5-0 at half time

Seemingly having learnt the lesson from recent games, the Barça players were playing a fast paced possession football with their opponents' goal always their target and they enjoyed an astonishing 80% of possession in the first half. Cesc nearly made it three on 25 minutes, only for the Basque team's keeper Fernandez to this time get the better of him and soon after Messi headed against the woodwork. There was little the keeper could do as Villa rounded him just past the half hour to get his first of the night though and the team showed their hunger for goals was still there with two in two minutes, as Roversio put through his own net after Villa's shot had been blocked and then Cesc brilliantly set up Messi for a relatively simple tap in.

And three more!

It was clear from the start of the second half that more was to come and Messi hit the bar with a lovely chip, something Xavi managed to better with a lob over the keeper soon after to make it six. Guardiola now brought of Xavi, Puyol and Abidal, which momentarily at least seemed to give Osasuna a glimpse of at least getting close to Valdes.

However, Barça were soon back to scoring, with Cesc setting up Villa for his second on 75 minutes and soon after Messi claiming his hat trick with a trade mark individual effort to round off a pitiless display of attacking prowess that was just unstoppable, as the champions, led by the world's best player, made it 13 goals in the team's two Camp Nou league games so far this campaign.

Barça destroyed BATE Borissov with goals from Messi (2), Pedro, Villa, and an own goal, and came away with their first win in this season's Champions League. Messi has drawn level with Kubala as the second top scorer in the history of the Club.

LONDON -- Brazil and Santos legend Pele celebrated his 71st birthday in London in typical outspoken style this week, hailing the Premier League as Europe's top division but branding Lionel Messi an 'incomplete' player.

The three-time World Cup winner, who is in the UK for the global launch of his new sports lifestyle collection - The Beautiful Revolution - told Goal.com, "I would love to play with Lionel Messi. But Messi is an incomplete player because he can't use his head. Also I played football for 20 years, Messi has only played for several years."

He added, "If there is one player in the world today I would love to play with it is Neymar."

Pele was speaking at a special drinks reception held in London's Covent Garden to mark his 71st birthday, with guests including Rio Ferdinand, brother Anton, ex-Bayern Munich and Barcelona stalwart Patrick Andersson and Pele's 1970 World Cup opponent Terry Cooper, formerly of England and Leeds United.

Brazil's leading all-time goalscorer said he was delighted to be in England and hailed the country's top-flight division, "The English Premier League is the best league in Europe, better than La Liga."

When asked about who his toughest opponent was, Pele, who faced the likes of Bobby Moore and Giacinto Facchetti in his playing days, joked, "Sylvester Stallone during the filming of Escape to Victory. He was very strong."

The Rocky star played an American POW-turned-goalkeeper in the World War Two film in which he co-starred with Michael Caine and Pele amongst others.

As a birthday present, Pele was presented by PFA Deputy Chief Executive Bobby Barnes and Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with a special lifetime award - a glittering 18-carat gold-plated football boot.

Master & Apprentice | Pele & 18-year-old Arsenal starlet Oxlade-Chamberlain

"Alex is one of the best young players in the English Premier League. He made his debut at 16, and if he achieves a fraction of what Pele did he will have a fantastic career," Barnes said.

"Everyone remembers Pele's Brazil teams from 1957-70, and the World Cup victories of '58, '62 and '70."

"Only a few things are memorable from my childhood - the Apollo moon landings, Muhammad Ali's boxing fights ... and Pele. On behalf of the PFA, we are delighted to present this award as a symbol of our esteem."

Guests at the London event were then shown the Pele sport brand's Spring Summer '12 collection, featuring the launch of three distinct ranges - Pelé Story, Pelada and Performance.

The most heralded and eagerly-anticipated from these collections is the "revolutionary, ground-breaking, ultra-light" Trinity 3E football boot, which promises to "maximise a player's game and speed potential by training your muscles as you play."

[h=4]Injury doubt Alexis travels to Prague[/h] FCBarcelona.cat
The Chilean striker is back in the 21-man squad for the Champions League match against Viktoria Plzen. Cuenca and Oier are also included for the trip to the Czech Republic.
2011-10-30_ENTRENO_02.JPG

Alexis Sánchez has been added to the squad for the first time since picking up his muscle injury on 10th September. He will travel to Prague on Monday despite not yet having been given the all clear by Club doctors. The players will train on Monday in the Eden Stadium and then a decision will be taken on the South American star's fitness.

The squad is made up of the 19 available first team players plus Isaac Cuenca and Oier Olazabal from the reserves. Olazabal has been taken along as a precaution against last minute injuries to the senior goalkeepers during Monday training, as connections between Barcelona and Prague would otherwise make it impossible for him to join the squad in time for the match. Pedro and Afellay miss the game through injury.

Reserves join session

The players were back in training on Sunday morning after their 5-0 drubbing of Mallorca. As usual after a match, it was a light session for most of them. They were joined by 11 players from Barça B: Cuenca, Montoya, Deulofeu, Soriano, Gustavo, Espinosa, Sergi Gómez, Rosell, Rodri, Armando and Masip.
