STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma
  • His "long phase of rehabilitation" will continue outside the "public eye," his manager said
  • Schumacher is a seven-time F1 world champion
  • He suffered a severe head injury while skiing in France in late December

(CNN) -- Former F1 driver Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has been released from a hospital after a skiing accident last year, his management said in a statement Monday.
"Michael has left ... to continue his long phase of rehabilitation," according to his manager Sabine Kehm.
Schumacher, 45, suffered severe head trauma in a skiing accident at the French Alps resort of Meribel on December 29.
A seven-time world champion whose F1 career ended in 2012, Schumacher has been treated in Grenoble, France, since his accident.

F1's big design changes
In early January, a French prosecutor investigating the accident said that speed was not a reason for Schumacher's fall.
His investigative team says it thinks the experienced skier hit a rock hidden beneath the snow while traversing an area between two marked pistes, which catapulted him face first onto another rock.
Schumacher ended up 9 meters (30 feet) from the edge of the piste, prosecutor Patrick Quincy said.
Footage from a small camera attached to Schumacher's helmet has been used to help the investigators' analysis.
As in Kehm's previous statements, Schumacher's agent asked the media to respect the privacy of the F1 legend's family.
"The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes," she said. "We are sure it helped him. For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

Michael Schumacher has finally awoken from his coma, almost six months after his skiing accident in France.

The Formula One legend has left at Grenoble University Hospital to continue his recovery at a rehab clinic.

According to Bild, Schumacher can now hear voices and is responding to touches.

"He can communicate with his environment, especially his wife Corinna (45) and his children. Now Schumacher's condition is considered stable enough that he no longer needs the help of specialists in Grenoble," reports the paper.

The news that Schumacher was awake was released in a statement by his management company: "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore," the statement confirmed.

"His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

"The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

Schumacher was reportedly travelling at speeds of up to 60mph when the accident happened, and is thought to have been saved by his skiing helmet, which split on impact.

However, the racing legend's chief doctor said in March that it was unlikely he would ever fully recover from the accident.

Doctor Gary Hartstein wrote on his blog: "As time goes on, it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

Daniel Ricciardo is optimistic he will be able to challenge Mercedes at this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix on his Red Bull team's own track.
The Australian took his maiden career victory in Canada last weekend, after the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg hit trouble.
Ricciardo said: "Having a win, it still sounds weird. But it's cool. Not only for myself but the team.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo on season's flying start
"It's really given them a spurt and hopefully it can work out well here."
Mercedes had won all six races before Canada, but Ricciardo hopes the layout of the Red Bull Ring will help his team.
The Red Bull is at least a match for the Mercedes on cornering speed, but its Renault engine lacks power on the straights compared to the German team's engine, which is also used by Williams, Force India and McLaren.
Ricciardo said: "The circuit should be fun. It's a short lap, but the second and third sector looks like it should be a good time. So hopefully we can challenge."
Ricciardo and Rosberg are two of the few drivers who have previous experience on the track, which hosted the Austrian GP from 1997-2003.
In the intervening years, Red Bull has bought the track and revitalised it, but the layout remains the same.

The Red Bull Ring is owned by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who bought the circuit in 2004
Rosberg raced on it in his junior career and Ricciardo drove an F1 car on it during a Red Bull demonstration last year.
But both denied that would be an advantage over Hamilton, who has no experience of it.
Ricciardo said: "I've been around a few times but it won't take long to adapt and get used to it. By qualifying we'll all have our eye in. Mistakes are going to be costly. I don't think I have an advantage. By Saturday we will all be up to speed."
Rosberg added: "[It gives me] no help at all. What helps is I drove it in the simulator last week. It normally takes about 10-15 laps to learn a track."
The German heads into the weekend having opened a 22-point gap over Hamilton in the championship as a result of Rosberg finishing second to Ricciardo in Montreal, while Hamilton retired with brake failure.

Hamilton said he was "not too concerned" about the gap, given there were still 12 races to go this year.
"If it was a little later in the season, I might feel a little bit different," he said.
The Englishman said he was "excited" to race on a new track.
"I'm great," he said. "I couldn't be in a better place. I can't wait to get back in the car."
Meanwhile, F1 bosses have decided against changing the format of race weekends next season.
The rule-making strategy group had voted to reduce the number of Friday practice sessions from two to just one but a meeting of the F1 Commission of teams, sponsors and promoters on Thursday voted against the idea, which has now been abandoned.
Austrian Grand Prix coverage details

Force India want Perez penalty review

Force India will present new evidence to Formula 1's governing body in an attempt to have Sergio Perez's five-place grid penalty for the Austrian Grand Prix overturned.
Perez, 24, was penalised following a last-lap collision with Williams' Felipe Massa in Canada on 8 June.
The Mexican was deemed to have illegally changed his line approaching to the first corner, causing the crash.
"We believe we have enough evidence to prove I did nothing wrong," said Perez.
FIA stewards will meet at 08:00 BST on Friday to review the penalty and should they decide the additional evidence requires further investigation, a hearing will be convened after practice on the same day, which Perez and Massa will be required to attend.
The pair had been battling for fourth as they started the last lap at the race in Canada, which was won by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.
After the crash they were taken to hospital for precautionary checks before being released.

Massa criticised Perez for his part in the incident, saying the penalty "was not enough".
He reiterated that view at Austria's Red Bull Ring circuit on Thursday, adding that he no longer trusts Perez.
Asked what he will do next time if he tries to pass Perez, Massa said: "I will think twice.
"I have to believe that he will not move his car. And you cannot believe, when somebody is paying so many penalties, and causing so many problems, you cannot believe.
"I will not trust him any more in the car."

Austrian Grand Prinx is here.
Hivi sasa ni Practice 1 from Red bull Ring, Spielberg Austria. Practice 2 itakua saa 15:00 GMT +3

Umeshaanza na maneno yako ya gundu.

'"We definitely haven't lost any performance, we have only gained from that experience, as you do generally from all experiences like that," Hamilton said. "Regardless if you lose points, you step back from it and a lot of work goes into understanding the situation and rectifying it. If faced with a situation like that [again], firstly we will be able to handle it a lot better and the car has been fixed so it won't happen again."

"I'm great, excited and I couldn't be in a better place really. I've had a good couple of weeks and a bit of a busy week this week, but I decided just to get back in the car and this is quite a relaxed weekend for us, which is pretty good."
