Hasheem Thabeet: The Tanzanian Phenom

Waheshimiwa Kuhani na YNISM I am pleading with you to get over this "saggy jeans issue" na tuendelee na mjadala.

Binafsi, I'll cut him (dogo) some slack. Bado ni mdogo and he's just acting/ dressing his age.

Other than that he doesn't need to act and dress like a 55 year old. Aachwe afurahie ujana wake na watu waache majungu na kutoa ushauri ambao hata hawajaombwa!!

Nimekusikia Kaka/Dada Capitol Hill,

Thabeet, who Americanized his name from Hashim Thabit Manka....

"Holywood"

You can't miss him either - besides his height. If Thabeet isn't flashing his 1,000-wat smile, it's sunglasses. Or a pair of flashy earrings. Or a scarf. Imagine that: a 7-foot-3 Tanzanian rocking a scarf.

"He's Hollywood Hasheem," Sellers said.

And he's always been. On Thabeet's first visit to Storrs, he walked into Gampel Pavilion for a shootaround prior to the Huskies' game with Louisville dressed in a white velour sweat suit and sunglasses.

"And everybody was like, ‘Why is he wearing sunglasses?'"

Sasa baada ya kuona kuna discussions za jinsi kijana anavyo carry himself off the court, nikaona sio vibaya ku elevate the issues to more substantive dimensions of his public presentment and demeanor, zile ambazo zinaweza kumsababisha matatizo mbeleni.

And you would think, or we grew up believing, that Americans are of a more decadent culture than us Tanzanians, Africans. Only to find out that even the problem child of Chicago Bulls, Joachim Noah, spotted a business suit to the White House after the Gators won the NCAA, albeit the footwear he chose to match the suit with was flip flops. Sembuse Mtanzania, Thabeet. You said it Capitol Hill. And I thought that was a perspicacious point you made there. That public antic he exhibited when he met the president was over the top. You don't want to see such off-court antics spill over and affect his career.

Siku hizi kwenye ku recruit wachezaji kuna factor moja ime gain umuhimu, wanatafuta "character athletes." What Thabeet has exuded at times has not been responsible by way of judgment and character. I am just saying.

I am just saying.

Ukisema kijana mcheza mpira jamani asiendekeze vi scuffle uswahilini you don't want any police contact una wivu. Haya. Huwa nasema nanyaza.

Capitol Hill ahsante tena kwa mwongozo wako. I'm done talking!

ukitaka kumpa mtu ushauri unamtafuta yeye mwenyewe na kuongea naye. kutoa vijembe kwenye mtandao sio kumpa mtu ushauri

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Jeff Adrien scored 21 points, Hasheem Thabeet had 20 and second-ranked Connecticut remained unbeaten by dominating down low against undersized Fairfield in a 75-55 victory Friday night.

Adrien also grabbed 14 rebounds while Thabeet added 11 rebounds and six blocks for the Huskies (11-0), who have won 64 consecutive games against in-state opponents. Their last loss to a Connecticut team came against Hartford in 1986, Jim Calhoun's first season as coach.

Calhoun was concerned his team might have a letdown in this one after rallying for an overtime victory against Gonzaga last Saturday. He also worried that his players might look ahead to Monday's Big East opener against Georgetown.

But the Huskies, led by Thabeet, their 7-foot-3 center, shot 50 percent from the field and outscored Fairfield 48-22 in the paint.

Greg Nero scored 16 points for the Stags (8-4), who had won seven straight.

Thabeet and Adrien combined to score 26 points in the first half and UConn overcame a slow start to take 42-26 lead at halftime. The Huskies took control with a 21-5 run in which Thabeet scored 10 points and Adrien six, all on dunks or baskets in close.

Adrien began an 8-0 spurt with a dunk, putting UConn on top 15-14 midway through the half and the Huskies never trailed after that.

Thabeet scored the next six points. He made a shot in the lane and excited the crowd with an alley-oop dunk off a feed from Jerome Dyson. On UConn's next possession, Thabeet's left-handed hook shot made it 21-14.

Dyson's 3-pointer started a 9-0 run that featured two dunks by Thabeet and one by Adrien that made it 34-18. After a basket by Nero, Stanley Robinson dunked on an alley-oop pass from Kemba Walker.

Thabeet if you are reading this congratulations and work hard, we are all proud of you and are praying foy you.

Bad night for Thabeet. There are also some pretty damning articles on his attitude. If he is not careful he could end up a complete bust.

Thabeet needs to focus, work really hard, stay confident (but humble) and he will be fine. But if he starts losing confidence or thinking that he is better than he is this could turn out ugly.

There are still a lot of games to be played. Stay focused man.

Thabeet humiliated by Monroe in loss

PrintHARTFORD, Conn. — Nearly three dozen scouts descended on the XL Center to witness what was expected to be a battle inside between Greg Monroe and Hasheem Thabeet.

One little thing happened, however: Thabeet failed to show up.

The junior center, hyped for each of his three seasons at UConn as a potential NBA lottery pick, finished with four points, seven rebounds and seven blocks in the Huskies’ 74-63 loss to No. 12 Georgetown on Monday.

“No heart, no hands,” said one scout who wished to remain anonymous.

The defensive numbers could have been more impressive for Thabeet, who easily had his worst outing of the season in the Huskies’ biggest game. Making things even more devastating for the 7-foot-3 junior was the play of his counterpart: Monroe looked comfortable not only in the paint, but handling the ball on the perimeter, finishing with 16 points, three rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes.

“It’s just one of those days, you know?” Thabeet said. “I couldn’t make a shot.”

Georgetown’s defense was partially to blame. The Hoyas’ zone tightened whenever the Huskies looked inside to Thabeet or Jeff Adrien, and Thabeet failed to get a hand on the ball on several good looks.

But defensively, Monroe was able to exploit Thabeet’s growing lack of confidence, running circles around the junior and scoring on backcuts and lay-ups. He even made a pair of 3-pointers over Thabeet’s reach.

“I’m not going to comment on any player – you saw what you saw,” said UConn head coach Jim Calhoun, outwardly discouraged by Thabeet’s performance. “[Conversely], the freshman, Monroe, was just great.”

Mutombo advises Thabeet against joining NBA
DAILY NEWS Reporter
Daily News; Friday,January 02, 2009 @09:37

DIKEMBE Mutombo, the Congolese-American professional basketball, has urged Tanzanian upcoming basketball player who plies his trade in the United States, Hasheem Thabeet, to avoid rushing into NBA.

US website www.fannation. com has revealed that Hasheem’s mother, Rukia Thabit, turned to Mutombo, last spring when looking for advice as to whether her son, who is at the University of Connecticut centre, should go to the NBA after his sophomore season.

Mutombo, who is regarded as one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players of all time, told her that Hasheem should put in at least another year with the Huskies before going pro, because he wasn't a definite lottery draft pick.

Hasheem, a college basketball player for the University of Connecticut Huskies, has reportedly followed the advice and now seems poised to be a high selection player in the 2009 NBA draft, if he decides to leave after his junior year.

"I talked to his mom when he was considering going from college to the NBA last year (2008)," said Mutombo, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo and current NBA free agent who has drawn some interest from the Celtics.

"I will give advice to any African kid who would want it from me. I want to see more African kids come to the NBA. "I told him to wait. His family passed the message on to him,’’ he said. Visitors of fannation.com commented on the report supporting Mutombo’s advice to Hasheem.

“He's a tall kid.....but he has major flaws in his game and taking him at the top of the draft is a big mistake; he is dominant against lesser teams and when he plays big east teams, he is just not the same player,” read one of the comments. Another commenter argued: “I went to UConn and follow the programme. Thabeet needs to stay through his senior year. “Smaller centres push him around.

He can't stay on his feet! Watch an UConn (University of Connecticut Huskies) game and see how many times Thabeet ends up on the floor by being knocked around by some smaller center. The big men in the NBA would push him around like he was a nobody.” “The Big East is a powerful conference this year. Let's see how well he does against those centers instead of the creampuffs that they have played,” concluded another.

Last Friday, Hasheem scored 20 points and 11 boards as second-ranked Connecticut cruised to a 75- 55 victory over undersized Fairfield in NCAA league. But Thabeet was a nonentity, managing only four points on four shots when Huskies were hammered by Georgetown 74-63 on Monday.

“It’s just one of those days,” Thabeet was quoted as saying after the defeat, adding “I just couldn’t make a shot.” Georgetown coach John Thompson III talked of the Tanzanian basketball player: “Thabeet’s not going to go through too many games the rest of his life with a game like that. It happens.”

Before attending UConn, Hasheem attended the Cypress Christian School in Houston, Texas where he averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game. As a junior at UConn, Thabeet is maturing and averaging 14.5 points and 12.5 rebounds after snaring just 7.9 last season; according to US sources.

Hasheem yuko ESPN sasa hivi. kwa wanaotaka kuangalia game.
