LIEUTENANT General Silas Mayunga (retired) was honoured with a medal in recognition of the heroism he showed in the war against the forces of aggression of Uganda's Iddi Amin Dada, the National Assembly heard yesterday.
The Deputy Minister for Defence and National Service, Mr Omar Yusuf Mzee, told the House that apart from the heroic medal, Mr Mayunga was also
promoted to Major General -- on March 21, 1979. The war ended on April 11, 1979.
On June 21, 1995, the deputy minister said, Mr Mayunga was elevated again to the rank of
Lieutenant General. He was later shown further government recognition and hounour when he was appointed ambassador to various African nations.
After retirement from active service, the government continued to offer him befitting upkeep and protection just like other former high-ranking military leaders. Mr Mzee said Lieutenant General Mayunga has the right to come and watch the National Assembly in session.
Mr Mzee said the war against Iddi Amin was supervised very well by the headquarters of Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces (TPDF) in Dar es Salaam. After the war, he said, all Tanzanian combatants, including Mr Mayunga, received medals for heroism.
The deputy minister was responding to a question paraded in the National Assembly by Mr Haroub Said Masoud (Koani - CCM), who desired to know what the government has done to honour
Lieutenant General Mayunga who led Tanzanian soldiers in the Kagera War.
He also wanted to know if
Lieutenant General Mayunga had the right to come to watch the National Assembly in progress. Mr Mzee also said Tanzanians from all walks of life were allowed to come to Dodoma and watch the National Assembly in session.
