Milan have made an explorative inquiry with former Valencia manager Marcelino but without going forward. The club’s most fascinating idea is Spalletti but his salary is deemed very high and he should first terminate his contract with Inter [Di Marzio]

Everyone at Milan is convinced of making a coaching change including the ownership. The win against Genoa still did not serve Giampaolo any good. The management is looking to convince Spalletti to take over the team with the season ongojng [Gazzetta dello Sport]

📰 @DiMarzio : Milan inquired about Marcelino, the former Valencia coach. The most discussed idea is that of Spalletti who must terminate his contract with Inter.

Inter could give Spalletti a six-month salary as severance payment before rescinding his contract allowing him to join Milan

Luciano Spalletti has informed his friends that he has no intention of taking the AC Milan job, according to a report.

Giampaolo appears to be heading closer and closer to getting sacked, with the ex-Sampdoria boss having overseen a poor start to the season.

Milan scraped past a struggling Genoa side on Saturday to end a run of three straight defeats, having lost four out of six to start a season for the first time since 1938.

Il Corriere della Sera on Monday reported that the chances of Giampaolo getting sacked are ‘very high’, with Luciano Spalletti the number one target to replace him.

La Gazzetta dello Sport then stated that Inter are happy to try and resolve his contract, which would free him to join another club.

However, the same outlet (via Calciomercato.com) are stating that Spalletti – knowing that he has a guaranteed income from Inter until 2021 – does not want to cut his break short.

Instead, he has apparently told his friends that he has ‘no intention of going back into the fray’ – which is bad news for Zvonomir Boban and the rest of the leadership.

The cost of hiring Luciano Spalletti to replace Marco Giampaolo as head coach at AC Milan has reportedly been revealed.

Giampaolo’s job is more and more at risk as the hours go on it seems, with the ex-Sampdoria boss set to pay the price for a poor start to the season.

Milan scraped past a struggling Genoa side on Saturday to end a run of three straight defeats, having lost four out of six to start a season for the first time since 1938.

Widespread reports have claimed that Spalletti is the frontrunner to take his place, though he is still contracted to former club Inter until 2021.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport – as cited by Calciomercato.com – the Nerazzurri are happy to try and resolve his contract, which would free him to join another club.

The paper reports that Inter would save around €15million if he chose to end the contract early, to which staff fees would also be added.

It is described as ‘a great saving for those who have already taken another road’ in Antonio Conte.

*Curva Sud issue press release: “Exhausted by the foolishness of this leadership”*

Curva Sud AC Milan supporters
Following AC Milan’s decision to sack Marco Giampaolo, which was announced this evening, as well as the rumours claiming Stefano Pioli will replace him, Curva Sud have issued a press release about the situation (via MilanNews.it).

As reported by Gazzetta Dello Sport’s Nicolo Schira, among other sources, the Rossoneri are ready to announce Stefano Pioli as the new manager. In fact, he will sign a two-year deal in the coming hours, valued at €1.5m per year.

However, in their statement, the Curva Sud directed their disappointment towards the leadership, who they feel have failed to follow the club’s alleged project by constantly settling for the second choice.

“Time is up, now prove yourself! This was the banner that we displayed in the away end at Genoa, Milanisti exhausted by the foolishness of this leadership. Whenever we think we have hit bottom, the situation gets even worse.

“We supported the new project of a team made up of young players, reluctantly accepting the fact that no top-players were coming, at least for the moment. We have witnessed the failed management of Giampaolo, a choice strongly desired by the current management and thrown to the winds, just after three months of work (rightly so).

“We have seen a summer transfer market characterized by many fuzzy goals, replaced at last by other players never mentioned before for the new Milan project. Today, after all this, we are faced with a change of course, yet another in recent years.

“We do not want to express ourselves from a technical point of view on the choice of the new manager, this will show on the pitch. The thing that leaves us baffled is that the club had decided on another manager for our bench, although without announcing the sacking of the old manager.

“Once again, they fell back on another name, highlighting all of their weaknesses, not getting what they really wanted (most likely referring to Spalletti, editor’s note). The Rossoneri fans are tired of being taken for a ride, WE do not deserve and we will never accept this unworthy show again!”

In the game against Fiorentina, the Curva Sud left the stands early, chanting ‘this club doesn’t deserve us’. In other words, they weren’t happy with the situation back then, and the change of managers hasn’t made things better as the club is still a mess.

Milan ultras released a statement calling the club “weak and failing yet again to achieve the target it really wanted” after replacing Marco Giampaolo with Stefano Pioli.

Giampaolo was axed today after just seven games and 111 days in charge, a new club record.
Pioli is already in a hotel in Milan and will be announced as the new tactician tomorrow morning, but fans are already furious at the introduction of the ninth different Coach since Max Allegri was sacked in January 2014.

“Time’s up… you have to prove yourselves!” read a statement from the Curva Sud ultras.
“This was the banner we laid out in the stands on Saturday during the Genoa game, representing a population of Milanisti exhausted by the continual embarrassment of this club.

“Every time we think that we’ve hit rock bottom, the situation precipitates even more. We supported the new project of young players, accepting with heavy heart the fact we wouldn’t see top players arrive, at least for the moment.

“We watched, stunned, the failed Giampaolo era, a choice strongly backed by the current directors only to be thrown out the window after not even three months of work (quite rightly).

“We saw a summer transfer campaign filled with missed targets, replaced at the last minute by other players who had never even been mentioned before for the new Milan project.

“Today, after all this, we find ourselves faced with another change of direction, the latest of recent years. We don’t want to express ourselves on the technical merits of the new Coach, as always that will be judged by the playing field.”

The statement then criticised Milan for their pursuit of Luciano Spalletti, only to go for Pioli when the cost was considered excessive.
“The thing that leaves us disconcerted is that the club, who had chosen a different Coach for our bench, without even telling the old tactician that he had been fired, then moved on to a second choice.

“That highlighted yet again the weakness of this club in failing yet again to achieve the target it really wanted.
“So prove yourselves up to the standard of the history of our Milan, on the pitch, on the bench, but first and foremost in the offices of the HQ at Via Aldo Rossi, because it is from the decisions made at the top that the results of the business model depend, it is from the headquarters that you build a healthy and strong club.

“Rossoneri fans are fed up of being taken for a ride. WE do not deserve that and we will never again accept this undignified spectacle!”

Zvonimir Boban insists Milan now have a “great Coach” in Stefano Pioli and that he was their first choice to replace Marco Giampaolo.
Boban has been come under intense scrutiny from the Milan fan base for endorsing Pioli’s appointment, but the club chief asserted the former Inter boss had what it took to get the Rossoneri back on track.
“It’s not nice to be here for a change of Coach, which is a defeat for all of us, also on a personal level,” he explained at a Press conference.

“However, we must move forward with a choice that we think is right for Milan, like we did during the summer.

“I wish good luck to Stefano Pioli, a great Coach who arrives at a difficult time. If we’re here, it means the responsibility is also ours.
“But we mustn’t throw ourselves off the course, at least until we realise that we’re no longer working for the good of the club.
“The important thing is never to lose dignity. We’re sorry about this situation, but it’s football.
“I’m not talking about Spalletti, a very good Coach. Our choice was Stefano Pioli.

“It’s normal that many free Coaches were on our shortlist, but we focused on Pioli, a Coach who knows our club and Italian football.
“We’re not the best team in the world, but we’re also not the team we’ve shown to be so far.
“We’re convinced that with Pioli, we can see a better game than what we’ve seen so far.

“We must aim to improve so Milan can be brought back where they need to be.
“We’re working every day to understand how we can make Milan a great team again.

“Some more experienced players would be useful, but we know the market has precise dynamics.
“We focused on certain technical qualities in the summer. We are what we are and we have much more strength to put out.
“We know well that we can do so much better.”

A Wednesday full of change for AC Milan, and a very special Wednesday for Stefano Pioli: first his appointment and then his presentation press conference alongside Ivan Gazidis, Zvonimir Boban, Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara. These were the first words and emotions of the new Rossoneri Coach from Casa Milan, which were broadcast live on the AC Milan Official App, Facebook and Milan TV.

STEFANO PIOLI’S FOOTBALL
“I’m preparing myself for this adventure with a lot of enthusiasm, passion and conviction. I know that I’ve received the call from a great club, one of the most prestigious in the world. I’m sure that I can do a great job here because we have a good team and good players. I’d like to play a style of football that the team enjoys; positive and entertaining football which brings the best out of our players. Football with both quality and intensity. A lot will stem from our attitude and performance in defence, then also from our aggression further forward and our ability to win back the ball. I feel mature, I’m a professional who wants to do well at AC Milan.”

WORK
“I have new ideas which are different to those of Giampaolo and I’ll have to be good at conveying them both well and quickly. The biggest focuses for me are: ideas, intensity and a willingness to take risks. The characteristics of my players are well-suited to the way I play football. I’ll have to work on everything, from the players’ heads to their positioning on the pitch. The next few days will be vitally important in order to be ready as soon as possible for the game against Lecce. I don’t concern myself with numbers, what’s important is having a precise identity. Now I’ll look more at Lecce than Milan’s games in the past, also because we’ll be missing several players who are in action with their national teams. We have to prepare the best we can. This game is a must-win.”

QUALITY AND INTENSITY
“I always think positive. We’re AC Milan and we will always fight to get the best results. There are difficulties that exist but they must be faced and overcome through hard work with quality and intensity. We have to become a united and cohesive team as soon as possible. I feel like a teacher, my goal will be to bring the best out of every one of my players. No one’s spot is guaranteed, everyone will have to feel involved and give their all every day. We have all the ingredients to make it happen: from the club to the facilities to the players.”

OBJECTIVES
“I’ve watched every Milan game this season. I’m very demanding with myself and with my players, I won’t tolerate any lack of desire or ambition. Only through work and sacrifice can you achieve great things. Together we will have to give everything, because there’s also almost an entire league campaign where we can bounce back. Time may be an enemy but it’s also an ally and we have to make the most out of every single moment we have. We have to fight for Champions League qualification. It will take courage, and we’re well aware that there are several other strong teams competing for the same thing.”

THE FANS
“I have a lot of respect for the fans and they have the right to criticise. But for me this will be an extra incentive to do even better. I never have and I still don’t use social media, I prefer to deal with people who look you in the eye when they tell you things. We’ll have to be at our best to win back our fans.”

INDIVIDUALS
“Piątek is extremely effective in the box, he’s a goalscorer. A striker is often conditioned by the team’s play, he certainly has to be helped by the rest of the team. Paquetá is a complete attacking midfielder, both in quality and the quantity of what he produces. I often like to play about with the positions of my players on the pitch, so he could often play between the lines. Leão has a huge amount of potential which we have to make the most of. Suso is also a great player, he has to be put in the ideal conditions to express himself at his best, especially in one-on-ones.”

Hiring Stefano Pioli made ‘a lot more sense’ for AC Milan than opting for Luciano Spalletti, according to one journalist.

The Rossoneri confirmed the appointment of Pioli as their new head coach today via a statement on their official website.

Marco Giampaolo was sacked after just seven games and 111 days in charge, having lost four out of his first seven games in charge.

Luciano Spalletti appeared to be the man set to take the job, however that all stalled when it was revealed that he could not agree a severance package with Inter.

ESPN pundit and insider Gab Marcotti though believes that Milan got the better of the two anyway, given their current situation.

“I think out of the possibilities, given it’s midseason, Stefano Pioli makes a ton more sense than Luciano Spalletti,” he told them.

“Of course there are risks attached to anything, but I think it could have been potentially worse to keep Giampaolo.

“On Spalletti though, first of all you’re looking at a guy who has two years left [on his deal] at Inter, so you’re looking at about €20million over two years.

“There’s no reason to throw good money after bad with that guy. The other thing – we know how this guy got Inter into fourth place, it came down to one game against Lazio that could have gone the other way.

“We should also remind ourselves that the big millstone around Inter’s neck financially is down to Nainggolan, Perisic and Icardi.

“He extended the contracts of the first two, Nainggolan was a guy he personally wanted, and part of the reason Conte couldn’t get the depth that he wanted is because of the decisions that this guy [Spalletti] made.

“We also remember how badly they played at certain times and he goes off message: this is not what Milan need right now.

“Spalletti might be a situation where you’re thinking ‘I want to win now, last piece of the puzzle’. He’s not somebody to take you places, and the other big thing is he’s not somebody who has a history of success in working with youngsters.

That on the other hand is one of the things that makes Stefano Pioli appealing I think.

“It is also my understanding that Pioli’s style especially in his last appointment at Fiorentina, they feel that he counter-pressed really really well.

“Pioli is a guy who keeps trying to update the way he plays. Sometimes he gets it, sometimes he doesn’t. I think that’s where they want to be, I don’t think it’s any mystery when you look at the very top.”

Cesare Prandelli believes he knows why Milan failed under Marco Giampaolo. “All Milan players are instinctive and don’t follow tactics.Seeing the team from the outside, I did develop a theory as to why things went so wrong."

“Giampaolo loves a reasoned-out style of football that follows certain patterns, whereas all their players are instinctive and don’t follow tactics. It becomes difficult at that point to find some common ground. Having said all that, Giampaolo 100 per cent deserves his tag as a great Coach in Italian football, it’s just this squad didn’t suit his ideas
