AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has vowed to fight for a better finish than sixth next season as he reflected on his time as Rossoneri head coach.
Milan will be looking to end their season with a bang on Saturday night as they face Cagliari at San Siro in the final game of the 2020-21 campaign.
The Rossoneri are undefeated since the resumption of Serie A having won eight of their 11 games, the most recent being a 4-1 win against Sampdoria on Wednesday night.
The Milan boss will be without the suspended Ante Rebic for the curtain call, during which Milan will wear their new home shirt for the first time, as well as injured trio Mateo Musacchio, Andrea Conti and Alessio Romagnoli.
Pioli spoke to reporters at his usual pre-match press conference at Milanello, and his words were transcribed by MilanNews.
*Did you expect this continuity of performance?*
“It must be our common thread in the next season. We have worked hard to find this continuity and this game philosophy,” he began.
*Do you have anyone to thank for this season?*
“I have many, but I really want to thank my staff who helped me so much. Then I also thank the people who work at Milanello.”
*Are you satisfied with the mentality created?*
“Creating a mentality is the most important and complicated aspect. We have succeeded and also in not brilliant times. This mentality must be the basis for the next season.”
*Are you sorry that the season is over?*
“Yes, sorry. The boys have given everything and they need to rest. Here there is great harmony between us, there is a desire to work and this gratifies our work. I am sure that I will find the same atmosphere when we will resume.”
*Who will play tomorrow?*
“The best Milan will go on the pitch tomorrow too. I don’t know who will play, I have to evaluate a few things. Rebic will not be there, so Leao will play from the beginning. There will be some changes, but everyone is ready.”
*What family has been created in the last few months?*
“A nice family. Yesterday’s dinner is a testimony. It is right to gratify those who allow us to do our best. We have done a lot, but we expect a lot from Milan and therefore we must improve because Milan must always fight for the top positions.”
*On the evolution of Rebic, Kessie and Calhanoglu:* “Many players have grown and shown their qualities. I was sure we had a quality team, we just needed time and confidence. The game has grown and has allowed players to grow and vice versa.”
*Do Milan deserve more than sixth place?*
“We had an excellent 2020, but it is not over. We have to finish well and get points tomorrow night. We are tired both mentally and physically, unfortunately we cannot improve the ranking, but we have a duty to do well tomorrow as well. What we don’t have reached this year we have to reach it next year, sixth place will not be our goal.”

🗣 Reporter: "Do you also hope that tomorrow's game will not be Ibra's last for #ACMilan?"

🗣 Pioli: "Yup."

AC Milan shareholder demands signings as he insists Elliott will sell the club on soon

By Oliver Fisher - 31 July 2020, 12:08

The leader of AC Milan’s small shareholder group – Giuseppe La Scala – has reiterated his belief that Elliott Management will not be around for long.

There has been speculation in the media since they took over that the American fund are not looking at holding on to ownership of Milan for a long time, instead intending to transport the club into a much healthier financial position before selling for a profit compared to the price they seized the club for.

La Scala spoke to Radio Sportiva’s microphones about the future of the Rossoneri, also demanding that the club get back to being competitive on a European stage as soon as possible.

He began by reflecting upon the current positive moment that the club are experiencing, with his words transcribed by Calciomercato.

“AC Milan has found security and a good style of play, but to think that this team will go to the Champions League next year in slippers would be absurd. To continue we must operate on the market, with important signings,” he said.

“Elliott? Passing owners, these operations tend to organise a company advantageously in 2 to 3 years. This explains the attention to salaries and cost containment.”

Ibrahimovic showed everyone what he is capable of at the ripe age of 38 on Wednesday night as he scored a brace to move on to nine league goals in 2020, and he also provided an assist for Hakan Calhanoglu.

La Scala commented on the Swede’s impact: “Ibra? I didn’t think he would, but he gave this team an obvious added value.

“Now he must be included in a project where AC Milan grows further, perhaps with a young striker who can work alongside him and replace him.”

AC Milan finished the season in the best way possible, beating Cagliari comfortably at the San Siro with a 3-0 scoreline. Although they didn’t reach fifth place, Stefano Pioli and his men deserve a lot of praise.

The Rossoneri took the lead early on this evening through an own-goal, after Rafael Leao managed to beat his opponent on the left flank. Unfortunately, the Portuguese striker had to leave the pitch with an injury, having looked very promising indeed.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty just before half-time but got his revenge in the second half, sending a rocket past the goalkeeper to double Milan’s lead. Samu Castillejo then killed the game with the third goal, assisted by Jack Bonaventura.

In his post-match interview with MilanTV, as cited by MilanNews.it, Pioli shared his thoughts on the game and the season as a whole. He also spoke about the goals for the upcoming season.

42 points in one half: “The boys were exceptional, a fantastic return with excellent performances. Beyond the positive results, it was important to create a mentality, it must be a basis on which to build an even more satisfying future.”

AC Milan’s goalscoring: “We have confidence and conviction, we also need quality. It means that we have these values. We close the season with satisfaction. We hoped we would not have to do the playoffs but we will face them with conviction. We need to close the gap with the top teams.”

On Ibra: “Don’t tell him he’s the oldest to have scored 10 goals in Serie A (laughs, ed). He is a champion in everything he does, he has made a very important contribution. Our improvements have gone hand in hand, individually and collectively. The boys will have a well-deserved rest but soon they will have to resume training at home as during the lockdown.”

On what can be improved: “We can improve on many things, we must consolidate the good one done this year but we must already think about improving. We will get to know each other better, this team has to improve and I don’t think that if we have to arrive sixth again next year we will be happy.”

The goal for next year: “The goal is to improve and grow, to be aware of being a great club. We can’t wait to find our fans again.

"Juventus is not a famous team. It's just that they have a famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. The day Ronaldo will leave Juventus, Juventus will have no followers. Am saying this as a player who grew up supporting AC Milan the famous team. People are watching Ronaldo not Juventus, when he is injured nobody bothers to watch. The reason is they don't win anything in Europe, maybe now they can be inspired by someone who has 5 UEFA Champions League Cups."~Pepe

Maldini to Sky: “We have built something this season, this thing must have continuity. Zlatan is a part of this project. It will not be an easy negotiation but there is the desire to move forward with him.”
